In this city, it almost feels like you can’t turn a corner without running into a bit of history. The 901 is full of spots where famous people, from civil rights activists to musicians, have roamed or made their names. Whether you’re looking for an educational day or simply want to plant your feet where illustrious others have stood, this part of Tennessee has a little of both. If you want to immerse yourself in the most prominent places in town, here are the best landmarks and historical sites to visit around Memphis.

Pro tip: Take the historic Memphis trolleys to get you from site to site!

Sun Studio

Take a tour around Sun Studio, a legendary recording spot turned museum close to downtown. They call this place “The Birthplace of Rock N Roll” for good reason – many big names recorded some of their first hits here, like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, and more.

Memphis Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel

To learn more about Memphis’ civil rights history and Martin Luther King, Jr., plan a day at the Civil Rights Museum. This historical site goes in-depth into this city’s history and struggles for equal rights, and it also serves as a reminder of how much further we still have to go. You can also take a walk to the nearby I Am A Man Plaza.

Graceland

The home of Elvis Presley is arguably one of the most famous homes in the country, and you can take a tour of his grounds, airplanes, and more when you visit. They’ve even recently expanded the area’s hotel, shops, and restaurants, so there’s no shortage of things to do here.

Beale Street

The landmark that inspired a song is Beale Street itself. This strip in downtown Memphis is full of shopping, dining, and more along with tons of history steeped right into it. You can also catch some amazing music and shows on this street where many big names have played before.

Stax Museum

Stax Museum is another musical landmark in this city that hosts tours and events. Originally Satellite Records, Stax became a recording studio and record shop that helped create acclaim for many notable greats like Otis Redding.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo is one iconic site you won’t want to miss. It’s touted as one of the best zoos in the country, and with over 3500 animals to see, you can make a whole day of visiting this landmark. They’ve even got special events and exhibits, so check out their site to see what’s upcoming.

Memphis Museum of Science and History (Formerly Pink Palace)

The palace is still pink, but the name has changed to the Memphis Museum of Science and History, or MOSH. With a planetarium, nature center, and more, treat the family to an educational day that is anything but boring.

The Peabody

You may have heard of the Peabody ducks, but this historic hotel is also known for its glitz and glamour in downtown Memphis. Visit for their delicious food, extravagant lodging, or yes, even to watch the ducks twice a day on their walk to the famous fountain.

Party on top of the Peabody is back!

Victorian Village

Not far from Sun Studio is Memphis’ Victorian Village, an enclave of 19th-century mansions, some of which have been converted into museums, such as the Woodruff-Fontaine House and Mallory-Neely House. You can also stay or dine at some of these houses, and this is perfect for the traveler looking to step back into the Victorian era.

Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum

The Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum is a historic home with a profound past. It allowed safe passage for many wishing to escape slavery in the South, and now it’s a museum with 19th-century artifacts and furnishings, and it gives a look inside the underground railroad in Memphis.

The corner of College Street and Mclemore Avenue in South Memphis is home to the only museum in the world dedicated to preserving the legacy of Stax Records and American Soul Music. Above the entrance of the building is a memorable marquee that reads SOULSVILLE USA. In 1960, on the same corner, stood an old movie theatre that had been made into a recording and record label studio by siblings Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton. The studio, known as Stax Records’ Studio A, from 1960-1975, was THE place where artists who are now American icons recorded music that would change pop culture globally. Artists that put Memphis on the map for music lovers and continue to create awe and inspiration. Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, Sam & Dave, Shirley Brown… Do you see where I am going here? Icons. Right?

The label closed in 1975, and in 1989 the hallowed ground that was Stax’s Studio A, which inspired so many and housed so much creation, was regrettably demolished. In 2003, former Stax Records employee Deannie Parker and others ensured the museum in its place. 2023 marks the twentieth year of the museum, which is part of an organization known as the Soulsville Foundation.

Under Executive Director Jeff Kollath, the museum offers over 30 free public events annually, including live concerts, lectures, and youth programming. This year, in celebration of twenty years, the museum is pulling out all the tricks to lay the path for the museum’s future.

In addition to the shiny new remodeling of the museum’s lobby and gift store, the museum will host a live music series featuring popular artists that have been influenced by the genres of soul & R&B. In the spring, the museum will launch a mobile Stax experience called the Soul Mobile that will travel the country spreading peace, love, and soul music.

Check out a few of the museum’s key events coming up this spring, and go to staxmuseum.com and social media pages for the latest events and updates on the 20th Anniversary of the museum.

A note from the Author: I am the Director of Marketing at the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. I began working for Stax Museum in 2017, left in 2019, and came back home to Stax in 2022. There isn’t a much better scenario than figuring out ways to spread the power of Memphis soul music to fans and future fans for a living. How could anyone not love Soul music? If you know the answer, please note that the question was rhetorical. – Jayne Ellen White

Barbeque. Beale Street. Graceland. Blues, soul, rock’n’roll.

Memphis is famous worldwide for a lot of things — but for everything we’re famous for, there’s something else you might not know that makes our city special.

In this article, we look at seven things most people know about Memphis, plus another seven things they should know about.

Memphis is famous for its BBQ. Anyone who knows BBQ knows that Memphis is renowned for its slow-smoked pork. If you’re looking for all the Memphis BBQ restaurants that should be on your radar, we’ve even put together the Memphis BBQ trail for you!

…But Memphis is a serious wing city, too. Buffalo may have invented the chicken wing, but Memphis perfected it. We’re home to hundreds of amazing wing establishments and even host the World Championship Hot Wing Contest & Festival.

When it comes to wings, no other southern city compares. Check out our signature flavor, honey gold, at iconic local spots like Crumpy’s, Wing Guru, All-Star Hot Wings, and so many more.

Memphis is famous for Graceland, the world-renowned abode of Elvis Presley, which welcomes 500,000 fans of The King each year.

…But Memphis is also home to numerous arts and culture museums that are worth a stop. From the Stax Museum of American Soul Music (made famous by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Isaac Hayes) to Sun Studio (made famous by BB King, Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Roy Orbison), to the Dixon Gallery & Gardens — among other art museums — art history of all kinds is alive and honored in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for being home to blues, soul, and rock’n’roll — not to mention chart-topping hip hop.

…But every style of music is thriving in Memphis. From critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters like Julien Baker, to Grammy-nominated folk-soul artist Valerie June, all the way to our electronic music scene, music of all genres is in the water in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for the Mississippi River, with locals and tourists alike exploring its shores.

…But Memphis is also home to Tom Lee Park. Situated on the river, this historic park is being transformed into one of the premier riverfronts in the country. A massive expansion project is currently underway, with 1,000 new trees, a playground, event space, and much more.

Memphis is famous for Beale Street, a music mecca in downtown Memphis, and a pivotal place in the history of blues music.

…But the Cooper-Young neighborhood has plenty of history to offer, too. From historic homes to the church basement Johnny Cash recorded his first album, to countless restaurants, bars, and breweries to explore, it’s got everything you’re looking for and more — not to mention the annual Cooper-Young Festival, which hosts 100,000 visitors for food, music, and more each year.

Memphis is famous for its FedEx headquarters, a Fortune 50 company employing approximately 30,000 Memphians.

…But other Fortune 500 Companies like International Paper and AutoZone also call Memphis home, collectively employing hundreds of thousands of Memphians. Discover dozens of top Memphis employers here.

Memphis is famous for the National Civil Rights Museum, built around the famed Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. For over 50 years, this museum has educated visitors from far and wide about the Civil Rights Movement.

…But Memphis is also home to countless Black-led endeavors that champion arts, culture, activism, and so much more. One example: our friends over at nonprofits TONE and Unapologetic are working to develop the Orange Mound Tower, which is set to become a mixed-use arts, business, and housing space in one of the original Black communities in the United States.

Now you know!

Memphis is known for its monuments and museums honoring black history, but it’s also where many pivotal events took place. This month and any month, you can visit the sites where history happened and experience the local legacy of black activism and enterprise up close. Here are some places to pin.

Universal Life Insurance Building
480 Dr. M. L. K. Jr. Avenue

This office building was built in 1949 to house the country’s fourth-largest black-owned insurance company. Its architects, Moses and Calvin McKissack, chose its Egyptian Revival style to stand out from the western styles dominating Memphis’ midcentury cityscape. The building was restored by Self + Tucker Architects in 2018.

Mason Temple
930 Mason Street

The Mason Temple is the international sanctuary and central headquarters of the Church of God in Christ. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was a hub of local civil rights activities and the stage for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Mountaintop” speech. While Sunday services are no longer held there, tourists are welcome to visit.

Beale Street Baptist Church
379 Beale Street

Known as the “Mother of Black Churches,” Beale Street Baptist Church was built by and for survivors of slavery after the Civil War. In 1892, it served as Ida B. Wells’ office for the Free Speech, Memphis’ first black newspaper. A memorial plaza and life-size statue, which were unveiled in her honor last summer, are located right next door.

Robert R. Church Park
Corner of Beale and Fourth Street

On the other side of Beale Street Baptist Church, you’ll find the city’s first park for black citizens and visitors. It was founded in 1899 by Robert R. Church as part of “Church’s Park and Auditorium,” one of the only southern centers for black recreation during segregation. It now serves as a downtown greenspace and the site of countless cultural events.

To discover more local black landmarks, visit Memphis Heritage Trail or download their app. You can take a virtual tour of the South Memphis, Downtown, Orange Mound and Soulsville neighborhoods that highlight key figures and events in Memphis black history.

In Memphis, you’re always dancing on a fine line—dancing between what you know and what you have yet to find out. We’re perfectly happy enjoying our world-famous live music, sports, and barbecue all while charting our own course searching for hidden gems off the beaten path.

For those not in the know, we invite you to take a dance on the fine line with us. Here’s a peek at 7 under-the-radar activities that won’t disappoint:

Ride Your Bike on Big River Crossing

Hop on your bike or grab your running shoes and move across the Mighty Mississippi by way of Big River Crossing. This pedestrian bridge is the longest of its kind along the entire river, connecting Memphis to West Memphis and providing access to other trails. It also provides a one-of-a-kind view of the Memphis skyline. Open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Taste the Magic at Old Dominick Distillery

Memphis’s oldest distillery produces six spirits including whiskeys, vodkas, and their signature Memphis Toddy. For $12, you’re able to tour their entire facility and see what goes into making their spirits, followed by a tasting of all six. It’s a great way to kick off a weekend!

Explore the Memorial Park Crystal Shrine Grotto

Artist Dionicio Rodriguez built this man-made cavern using a style of concrete construction called Faux Bois. Everything at the Memorial Park Crystal Shrine Grotto is made to look real, but is actually styled from concrete, except of course for the religious dioramas depicting the life of Jesus Christ.

Walk Through Elmwood Cemetery

Encounter more than 100 years of Memphis history at Elmwood Cemetery. Underneath the canopy of the old trees lay the remains of some of the people who helped shape Memphis. There is no charge to visit, but there is a small fee if you want a docent-led tour. Either way, it is a fun and interesting way to spend a nice afternoon. Open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Go Back in Time at Malco Summer Drive-In Theater

One of the few remaining in the country, The Malco Summer Drive-In hosts a series of movie nights featuring old classics and cult favorites. Here’s how it works: show up at the theatre and park your car before sundown. When it’s dark enough, the movie starts followed by another and another, all night long. Expect themed nights, with three to six movies each.

Try Non-Traditional Barbecue

You may have already had your fill of our delicious Memphis Style Barbecue (if that’s even possible), but have you taken it past ribs and chicken to the next level? I’m talking about barbecue spaghetti, barbecue nachos, barbecue pizza, barbecue tofu, or a deep-fried cornish hen. You can find many of these dishes at our barbecue joints.

Is That a Real Shrunken Head?

Memphis has its fair share of museums, all corroborating our rich history and culture. But none like the Pink Palace Mansion. This Memphis institution doesn’t focus on any one particular aspect of the city’s culture but instead covers all things about the Mid-South: natural history, wildlife, Memphis history, the cotton industry, plus rare oddities like the infamous shrunken head.

Let’s face it, lurking under every great city, is a great treasure hunt… So go ahead explore, poke, try, question, and turn Memphis inside out. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to #BringYourSoul!

A New Century of Soul in Memphis has started to gain attention from the rest of the country, including Forbes. Memphis is quickly growing into a recognized hot-spot for music, art, and, of course, some of the best food this side of the Mississippi.

“Eating well in Memphis isn’t hard to do and the food ranges from offerings from nationally recognized chefs to down-home southern cooking that was a staple for Civil Rights activists.” writes Patrice J. Williams (@PatriceJWill) in the article. “Memphis natives Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman have several James Beard nominations, most recently in 2019, for their string of restaurants including Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen and Hog & Hominy.”

Now great chefs and restaurants are just the beginning, our city has so much to offer for locals and our guests alike. As this year marked our bicentennial and we enter a New Century of Soul, there is an overflowing amount of opportunities for fun and culture in the city.

Head over to the Stax Museum to learn about legendary Memphians who still influence our current music scene today. Get over to the bustle of Beale street and hear the sounds of live music dance through the street. Grab a delicious bite to eat, and check out some fantastic art our local galleries.

Head on over to Forbes to read more about our iconic city.

World of Dance is one of the hottest reality competition shows on television today. The series — which is produced by Jennifer Lopez, who may know a thing or two about dance herself — features dance performances from solo acts to large groups in any style. Contestants are in it to win a $1 million grand prize.

Yet the World of Dance is more than a television show, it’s a global brand of dance competitions and dance lifestyle events that take place all around the world from Europe to South America, to Asia and the United States. Videos from these events have been shared more than a billion times across social media platforms.

All that excitement is coming to Central Memphis with the launch event of World of Dance in Memphis on Nov. 10. The showstopping evening is a live tour of the World of Dance brand. It acts as a live dance showcase highlighting the pure talent, hard work, and dedication to absolutely incredible and awe-inspiring choreography.

Some of the hottest dancers from the World of Dance television show and other dance celebrities will touch down at Memphis’ Graceland Soundstage to offer an intimate, high octane concert for the audience.

At Elvis Presley’s former home, the Graceland Soundstage is an incredible venue for music performances, film screenings, and video filming. Aside from ticketed public events such as World of Dance, it has also been used to host private events, conferences, corporate meetings, and trade shows.

This is all a part of Memphis’ deep, rich history in music. The city has often been the center of rock and roll history. From Elvis to Johnny Cash to W.C. Handy, Memphis boasts an amazing musical pedigree for all audiences to enjoy.

Whether you’re into historic tours, concerts, music legends, nature, beer, or fine foods – Memphis has it all!

Memphis is a city rich in culture and history. Whether you’re into historic tours, concerts, music legends, nature, beer, or fine foods – Memphis has it all!

Along the Mississippi River

Ever heard of Mud Island? Well, to get there you’ll need to ride the monorail (only a couple of dollars). Once there, you can visit the Mississippi River Museum, walk the length of the river itself (Big River Crossing pedestrian bridge), catch a show at the Mud Island Amphitheatre, or even take a riverboat ride.

Now, for something really different, visit The Pyramid (sorry, no mummies here). To get there, you’ll first have to ride the country’s tallest free-standing elevator up 28 stories (300 feet). Considering the structure is glass on all sides, you’re guaranteed some spectacular views. Once at the top, you’ll be in the Lookout, an out-of-this-world restaurant and bar. Head outside to the glass-bottomed observation decks where you’ll get the best 360-degree view of Memphis.

Graceland

Whether you’re an Elvis fan or not, this is a must-see attraction for both locals and out-of-towners. Explore this mansion tour and learn all about the hip rocking, superstar entertainer. You will find yourself immersed in Elvis’ car and airplane collections, his ponies, his show-stopping outfits, and so much more.

Finally, at the gates to Graceland, grab a marker and leave your mark (literally) on the sidewalk, stone wall, and other surfaces surrounding the property (don’t worry, it’s legal!). Fans have been doing this Elvis was still living at the mansion. It’s a tried and true tradition!

Tired of seeing how the rich and famous live? Take a trip over to Beale Street and snap a photo with one immortalized in stone (bronze) instead! The bronze statue of Elvis was erected on Beale Street in 1997. Channel your inner Elvis and nail the stance for a truly memorable pic.

Beale Street

Beale Street is the place to visit for music lovers. The Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum is at the corner of B.B. King Blvd and Beale Street and provides a comprehensive journey of rock ‘n’ roll and soul music. Here you’ll be face-to-face with priceless artifacts and memorabilia. As a side note: Shelby County residents get free admission on Tuesdays from 2-7 p.m.

Ready to keep going? Great! Make sure to stop by one of the many bars and grab yourself a Beale Big A** Beer for the journey. Oh – and once you’ve downed that chilly and delicious beverage – grab yourself another one inside A. Schwab. After perusing the gifts, shirts, and other Memphis swag, head to the back of the store and grab yourself an old-timey malt, milkshake, soda, or choose your own adventure!

Feel your stomach rumbling? No worries! You can have the Best Ribs Ever at Blues City Café or a thin, deep-fried burger at Dyer’s. Beale Street has a plethora of foods to accommodate any and all appetites.

The Oddities

Go mural hunting! Memphis has become a hot spot for mural artists. You can catch amazing artwork almost anywhere in the city. Go on an impromptu scavenger hunt and see how many pictures you can get. Check out the Memphis Art Project to learn more. And don’t forget to post those pics (Memphis and its artists will thank you)!

Speaking of photo ops – visit any of the 1950s and 60s inspired establishments for a retro-esque souvenir. Make sure to snag one of those snazzy frames from any one of the number of shops to frame your photo forever.

We hope your visitors have fun and enriching experiences! Share your pics with us on Facebook!

Let’s be honest. There are a million wonderful things to do in Memphis, which is why we get over 10 million visitors to our city every year. So where do we — as Memphians — go for day trips if we have the time and budget to get away? It’s tough, but here are five places to visit when the bar is already being set pretty high at home:

1. Little Rock, Arkansas

Whether you want to see history or get away from it, Little Rock is your place to go. See the William J. Clinton Presidential Library or enjoy the Museum of Discovery. Take in the River Market District or visit the Rock Town Distillery. Whether you’re up for visiting the Arkansas Arts Center or the Little Rock Zoo, you’ll certainly find something to explore that’ll make the trip worth your time and effort.

2. Nashville, Tennessee

As the capital of Tennessee, Nashville has a lot to offer. Visit the “church of country music” or see the city’s replica of the Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park. Visit Broadway or take a live walking tour. And above all, visit one of the famous food establishments such as Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack or Rolf & Daughters. You won’t leave disappointed.

3. Oxford, Mississippi

Named after the British city of Oxford, there’s much to see and do on this day trip. Explore the campus of Ole Miss (with its many unique opportunities) or visit the famous, beloved home of William Faulkner. Enjoy the city’s farmer’s market (known as OXCM) or visit Big Bad Breakfast in the Mid-Town Shopping Mall. There’s truly something for everyone in this city.

4. Tupelo, Mississippi

Best known for being “the birthplace of Elvis,” this might be the only spot in the world that gets anywhere close to loving Elvis as much as we do. But — if you’re looking to put a little space between you and the king of rock ‘n’ roll —  there’s more to this town than meets the eye. Visit the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway or check out the famous automobile museum. And, perhaps the greatest reason of all to go: Here, it’s acceptable to eat fried chicken with biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

5. Water Valley, Mississippi

This is the getaway on this list that’s not like the others. Water Valley has become a much-loved day trip location precisely because it’s an escape from the big city. Known for being a small, laid-back town with state forests and a decent brewing company, the reason to visit Water Valley is there’s really not much to do. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need. If you need some R & R for your heart and soul, this is your spot.

No matter what you choose to do, enjoy your time away! But just know that the best part of taking one of these day trips will be coming back home.

There are plenty of fun fun places to go in Memphis. Memphis is more than a city with Graceland, Sun Records, the Reverend Al Green and great barbeque. It’s a destination city that has the best of Southern hospitality and Northern sensibility. If you are looking to commune in the great outdoors, you can do so in Memphis. If you are looking for nightlife, great music and world-class cuisine, you can also find it in Memphis. The city is more than one thing for one person; it is everything for everyone!

Looking for some of the fun places to visit while in Memphis in 2019? Here is a list of the top five destinations that should be on your checklist of must-see destinations when you come to the “bluff city.” Of course, don’t limit yourself to these suggestions; make sure you make the most of your time in Memphis and take in all of the beauty that this city has to offer.

1. Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum

You may be familiar with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, or the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. You may not, however, be familiar with the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum in Memphis. The museum is located at 191 Beale Street, the street that is the birthplace of blues and rhythm and blues music. First started as a research museum of the Smithsonian Institution, it became the first such museum associated with the Smithsonian that is not in New York or Washington, D.C.

2. Cooper-Young Historic District

The Cooper-Young Historic District is a neighborhood area bordered by Cooper and Young Streets in the heart of the city. It is where budding artists, artisans, hipsters and the eclectic crowd hang out, drink coffee and make music. The neighborhood is unique and has a vibe all unto itself. Ask locals about the Cooper-Young festival that occurs every September.

3. The Player’s Championship (TPC) at Southwind (Golf)

You may not be a member of this prestigious course, home to the World Golf Championship TPC‒Southwind event up until 2018, but if you are planning a destination outing, wedding or corporate event, what better place than a tour-level golf course and club? The par 70, 7,244-yard course offers great views of the natural beauty all around Memphis.

4. The Peabody Hotel

Not too far from the banks of the Mississippi River lies the famous Peabody Hotel on 2nd Street downtown. Although fun can be had at a hotel, the Peabody Ducks are the real attraction here. The “duck march,” a tradition that dates back to 1940, involves a visit by these famous residents to the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

5. Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum is a historic theater house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you like the theater and really like to have fun taking in a touring Broadway show, the Orpheum is the place to go. Who needs to go to New York when you can travel to Memphis to watch a show in a bustling Northern-like Southern town?

The Travel Channel has featured shows about delicious foods and amazing places in the world to visit. Now they’ve set their sites on Memphis!

In a recent article, the Travel Channel stated that Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!

With things like our world-famous barbeque, our impact on the civil rights movement, and our works of art, it’s no wonder why we are on their radar.

Memphis is a cultural melting pot in the South. It’s also an easy destination to travel to, no matter where you might be coming from. Whether you’re flying from New York or driving down from Indianapolis, it’s easy to visit, which is one of the reasons why it is such a hot destination.

Travel Channel said Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!

Perfect For All Ages

Travel Channel highlighted a number of reasons why Memphis is such an excellent travel destination for this summer. Why? Because there’s something for everyone to do, no matter the age.

Summer is the perfect time for families to get out and travel with school no longer in session. Because of this, the perfect destination needs to have activities for children of all ages. Yes, you’ll find plenty of cultural sights for educational purposes, and what child doesn’t love some sticky, messy BBQ? But beyond all of this, there are fun outing activities that both you and your children will love.

Just Some of the Great Activities

There’s no limit to the activities you and your family can take in. With the hundreds of possible southern locations Travel Channel could have selected as its hottest southern travel destination, the reason it picked Memphis was because of these limitless activities.

You can visit the River Line Trail, which was just recently renovated and finished. With kid-friendly activities along the water, fun tree houses, a 30-acre Tom Lee Park, plus festivals taking place throughout the summer, this is a prime destination when you want to get outside, take in the water, and enjoy your time with your family.

Are you an Elvis fan? Even if you were born after the King of Rock passed on, you’ve likely heard his music and know just how important he was to moving the music scene around the world forward. Well, you owe it to yourself to discover Graceland. While in Memphis you can visit the King’s music room, and a fan favorite “Jungle Room,” which is the literal definition of a Man Cave. Just make sure to pick up the Elvis favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich (which is, naturally, deep friend).

Make Your Own Memphis Memories

We could list out the hundreds of reasons why you should come to visit Memphis. From the food to the music to the culture to the festivals. But that takes some of the fun out of discovering Memphis for yourself. Travel Channel doesn’t just pick destinations on a whim. After all, it has television advertisements to sell, so it won’t make up random spots. It does its research and it puts its best foot forward so you can take advantage of its advice.

All of that is why you shouldn’t just read a list of things to do in Memphis. You need to come, explore, and make your own Memphis memories.

Bring your bib

Make sure to bring your bib when you visit Memphis. While there are plenty of places to see and things to do in the city, you’ll have your hands full with all the incredible food spots. And while there’s no shortage of food options, you’ll be in heaven if you’re a fan of barbecue (and if you’re not, you’ll soon be a fan after visiting Memphis).

Memphis loves its barbecue so much that there are over 100 different joints located right in the city. If you want to learn the art of barbecue, sign up for a class with the Memphis Barbecue Supply, or check out the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contests, where you’ll see the best of the best duke it out for top barbecue honors.

A life-changing history lesson

The city of Memphis is also a walking history lesson. This is one of the reasons why it’s such an excellent destination for parents and children alike. You’re never too old or too young to learn about civil rights. The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis is a large compound that includes the Lorraine Motel. This is where Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. You’ll also find insights into Rosa Parks and how the civil rights movement spread throughout the country.

There are plenty of fantastic destinations found around the United States. However, few give you the same kind of life-changing history insights as what you’ll find in Memphis, Tennessee.

Keep your camera ready

You never know where you’ll find works of art in Memphis. You may have noticed graffiti has taken on new forms in recent years. No longer is it just the tagging of buildings with intricate lettering (at best). In the city of Memphis , you’ll see this form of art taken to a completely different level.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has brought on world-class artists to transform the outside of buildings around the city into incredible works of art. Many of these paintings are directly inspired by famous Renaissance paintings. So if you look up and swear you saw the larger-than-life painting in an art history class you took in college, you probably did. The big difference here is (outside of the scale) is that you’ll actually be allowed to take a picture of the painting. And trust us when we say these jaw-dropping works of building art are well worth photographing.

Every season is a good season

There’s really not a bad time to visit Memphis. There are activities and events going on nearly every weekend of the year. Plus, the summers aren’t as hot as what you’ll find farther south, and the winters are mild. So you’ll find a happy medium right here.

TripSavvy is one of the leading travel websites in the world. It is designed to help connect lovers of travel with the best destinations. Whether travelers know exactly where they want to go or they are simply searching for inspiration on a new destination, TripSavvy has the answers.

Every year, TripSavvy selects a brand-new top destination for the year. To do this, the website combs through everything from the destination’s cultural impact and tours to the food options and potential activities a visitor can take part in. For 2019, TripSavvy selected Memphis as its overall top destination for visitors.

Discovering Memphis

As a local, I have known Memphis to be a beautiful, inspiring city. There’s something to see and experience around every corner. In the last several years, all kinds of exciting constructions and opportunities have breathed new life into the city. Not all of these new opportunities are exclusively for locals though. There are plenty of destinations for visitors, which is exactly why TripSavvy selected Memphis as the top city to discover.

The travel website highlighted Crosstown Concourse as one addition to the city that it found attractive. Built in the old Sears distribution warehouse, the renovated space has over a dozen recently opened restaurants. It basically takes the concept of the classic food court and ratchets it up to a whole new level.

Railgarten received a mention as well, with its 1.5-acre playground for adults. If you haven’t been there before, it includes everything from a classic tiki bar to an ice cream parlor, a ping pong room and a stage for live performances — and it even has a sandbox for adults.

More Than What’s New

It’s more than just the new establishments that attracted TripSavvy to the city of Memphis though. It also mentioned the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. While this destination has received a bit of a renovation in recent years, it is a classic historical museum that plays an important role in the city.

The website brought to light all the outdoor elements that nature lovers can take advantage of in Memphis. There is the city zoo, which has a brand-new hippo exhibit. It also points to the bike paths that connect throughout much of the city. It’s even possible to ride over the Mississippi River.

What Other Cities Did TripSavvy Mention?

Memphis is king of the mountain when it comes to 2019 travel, according to TripSavvy. But what other cities did the travel website highlight (and TripSavvy beat out)? Some of the most notable cities include London, Toronto, Los Angeles, Portland, Tokyo and San Antonio.

That’s a pretty impressive list — which makes Memphis taking the top spot all the more impressive.

All of this highlights what I, as well as most other locals, already know: The city of Memphis is alive and bursting with new activities and historical ventures to experience.

Appreciating creativity

Here are some places for sparking your imagination by observing and listening.

Art museums

Memphis is home to a number of notable art museums, including:

  • The Brooks Museum (18th through 20th-century art), 1934 Poplar Ave.
  • AMUM, the Art Museum of the University of the University of Memphis (works from ancient Egypt to present), 3750 Norriswood Drive
  • The Metal Museum (metalworks, foundry and blacksmithing), 374 Metal Museum Drive
  • The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art (historical and contemporary), 119 South Main St.

Garden strolls and art

Winter is a good time to heighten awareness of landscaping shapes, colors and textures (think bark, bare branches and berries) that we often don’t appreciate when blooms are abundant. Enjoy a winter stroll at Memphis Botanic Garden, 750 Cherry Road, and check its website for outdoor art exhibits (Origami in the Garden2 through March) and special events like the Jan. 25 Incognito! Art Auction fundraiser.

Downtown mural walks

Take a virtual walk online or an actual one downtown in search of the city’s famous murals, from “The Sound of Memphis” to “I Am a Man.” The downtown Memphis website provides details.

Positively Creative Series lectures

In the spring, Memphis College of Art, 1930 Poplar Ave., will host a series of talks about subjects including entrepreneurial blogging, fashion design, and maximizing social following on websites like Instagram.

Babies at the zoo

What can be more creative than birth? The Memphis Zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place, invites you to visit three new babies — Winnie the hippo, Rowan the orangutan and Lua the Linne’s two-toed sloth.

Being creative

Memphis is home to a number of organizations that encourage you to be creative in a hands-on way. Here goes.

Events and skill camps for creatives

Creative Works, 516 Tennessee St., is an organization that provides a wide variety of networking and learning events as well as a marketplace for creatives. It’s a good place to connect with creative types including animators, entrepreneurs, graphic artists, marketers and screenwriters. Events range from free pub network gatherings to 16-hour skill camps (about $1,000) and an annual creativity conference.

Crosstown Arts, 1350 Concourse Ave., is another organization that promotes creativity with exhibits, presentations and workshops by many kinds of artists, including writers and musicians. It offers residencies as well as community art making areas.

Innovative workspaces and incubators

ArtUp, 138 St. Paul St., is a business hub for entrepreneurial creatives including artists, chefs and designers. It offers lofts and mentoring for about 20 residents in its incubator program as well as support for creatives who don’t live there.

Creativity and mentoring aid the success of all startups. The “Memphis Business Journal” provides a detailed list of local business incubators, including Emerge Memphis, which offers tenant space and technical assistance programs.

Mid-South Makers, 2804 Bartlett Road, is an organization that provides makerspace (aka “hackerspace”) for people who love to tinker and invent. It’s a good place to meet other makers, share ideas and collaborate on projects.

Check out Crosstown Arts Shared Art Making for access to shared art-making facilities and equipment in digital arts, music, woodworking, printmaking, and photography. This space is open to all types of artists – from professionals to hobbyists!

Musical gigs

Love to sing? Perk up your pipes and maybe your picking skills at the Memphis Songwriters open mic nights. They’re held Monday through Thursday nights and Saturdays at coffee houses, restaurants and taverns throughout town.

If you enjoy performing classical works, the Memphis Symphony, 610 Goodman St., holds choir auditions twice a year. If you have some training, give it a go.

Becoming aware of opportunities

Never stop looking for opportunities to experience and practice the arts and innovation. Memphis is a great place to grow creatively.

#WeAreMemphis and we heart our city’s art.

There’s no denying it — music defines Memphis. Roam the internet for stories about the nation’s top music cities, and Memphis always seems to make the list. That’s because we’re known as the home of blues, soul, rockabilly and rock ’n’ roll.

And don’t ignore the fact that Memphis stays fresh by being a hub of musical experimentation, producing hybrids such as surf rock with a Memphis twang.

Plus, the Memphis music producer Sam Phillips recorded what is often cited as the first rock ’n’ roll song, “Rocket 88,” at his Sun Records studio when it opened in 1952. Ike Turner wrote the song about a powerful auto, and his band member Jackie Brenston sang it.

Music tourism

Memphis serves up a banquet of musical history and styles. It’s a major part of our tourism appeal as demonstrated at the Memphis Travel website, which tops its “what to do” page with the following iconic music hot spots:

  • Graceland, 3765 Elvis Presley Blvd.
  • Sun Studio, 706 Union Ave.
  • STAX Museum of American Soul Music, 926 East McLemore Ave.
  • Memphis Music Hall of Fame, 126 South Second St.
  • Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum, 191 Beale St.
  • Blues Hall of Fame, 421 South Maine St.
  • Beale Street, which has so many music clubs that it has its own app

Impact of Graceland

Memphis Magazine contributor Chris Davis identifies 1982 as the year that forward-thinking entrepreneurs began shaping our city’s music history as a tourist attraction. In a December 2015 article, Davis noted the tourism renaissance as beginning “when Graceland first opened its doors to the public.”

According to Davis’ article,  Beale Street had lots of boarded-up buildings the year Graceland opened. Sun Records (eventually renamed Sun Studio), where stars like Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison recorded, was just a quick flash outside the window on Gray Line Tours in the early 1980s, according to Davis’ article.

STAX Museum of American Soul Music is housed in the old STAX Records studio where stars like Booker T. and the M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding (backed by the Bar-Kays), Sam and Dave, and the Staple Singers all recorded.

Nowadays, the city’s musical landmarks hum with visitors. Ted Evanoff of the Commercial Appeal notes that the neon 1950s appeal of Beale Street was Tennessee’s top tourist stop as of 2016 when it attracted six million visitors.

We know all of the things that we are supposed to do in Memphis, but what are the unconventional things to do in the city? You can find plenty to do and see when you make plans to visit Bluff City, but instead of the conventional things to do in Memphis, check out some not-so-conventional activities.

Here are some unconventional places to go in Memphis when you come to visit.

The Ducks of the Peabody Hotel

One of the most unusual things to do in Memphis is to visit the Peabody Hotel to watch the ducks. Ducks at a hotel? Yes, a tradition since 1933, when the first team of ducks, Peabody, Gayoso and Chisca, graced the lobby of the formerly named Memphis Hotel Company. The ducks, one male and four females or hens of the North American mallard type, maintain residency on top of the hotel’s roof in a specially built duck palace. Every day, at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., the ducks make their walk from the roof to the lobby where they can be seen by guests and visitors alike. Fun fact: Although the hotel features a French restaurant, there is absolutely no duck on any Peabody Hotel menu!

See a Pyramid Without Going to Egypt

On your tour of the unconventional things to do in Memphis is a visit to an Egyptian pyramid. You may not be aware but the city of Memphis, TN takes its name from the ancient capital city of Memphis in ancient Egypt. The city was located at the mouth of the Nile river, which seems about right given the present-day city’s location on the Mississippi River. One thing that both cities have in common are pyramids. The Memphis Pyramid, which sits at the mouth of the Mississippi, is home to one of the largest Bass Pro Shops in the U.S. and was known in the past for hosting college and professional sports.

Memphis Pyramid Cover Photo by David Roseberry

Drinking with the Goats on Beale Street

If you think hanging out with a bunch of pampered ducks is unusual, how about a group of beer-drinking goats in downtown? No, this is not a typo. Silky O’Sullivans, a bar located in downtown Memphis on famous Beale Street, features two female goats. The goats are known to roam the grounds of the bar, in their tower, looking down on bar-goers and occasionally conning a beer or two off an unsuspecting patron. The goats are treated well by Silky himself, who may share a story or two with you on how they came to take up residency at his bar.

Walk on Water at the Mud Island River Park

You can walk across a five-block replica of the lower Mississippi River. The Mud Island River Park is designed to give you the experience of striding, on scale, the entire river area from Cairo, IL to New Orleans, LA. Once you take your journey, learning how the river flows from state to state, you can step into a 1.3 million gallon pool that replicates the Gulf of Mexico. There you can ride paddleboats and enjoy your trip across the mighty Mississippi.

There are many different ways to enjoy Memphis. So, look for these and other fun and unconventional things to do in Memphis!

Are you planning a day trip or extended visit to Memphis, TN? We are excited to have you here, and we want to share a few spots you should experience during your stay. From food to entertainment, here are insider tips on things to do in Memphis:

Find great food and drinks in Memphis

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken: Your trip to Memphis wouldn’t be complete without a quick stop in this hole-in-the-wall spot that serves up some delicious dishes. The coconut pie, greens and fried green tomatoes are some of the unexpected items you may want to try when visiting. Of course, the fried chicken they are known for should be one of the main things you get.

Restaurant Iris: If you are looking for something on the fancier side, the French cooking here is something you should experience. From surf and turf to sandwiches, every dish is excellent and flavored to perfection. The slow atmosphere of Restaurant Iris is meant to give you a respite during a busy day. So, prepare to slow down and enjoy the fine dining.

Hog and Hominy: In the mood for some seriously delicious Italian + Southern cuisine?  From wood-fired pizzas with creative toppings to mouthwatering pasta dishes, Hog and Hominy’s menu showcases the best of both worlds.

Outdoor exploration and entertainment

Shelby Farms Park: From the drive-thru Christmas light display to the dog park, locals love the Shelby Farms Park, and you will want to stop here too! The paths cross beautiful views, perfect for a jog or walk. A lake provides space for water activities and fun family activities, like horseback riding. An onsite restaurant can make this a great spot for a day trip.

Orpheum: This historic theater is one of our favorites and a place you should visit when you are in Memphis. The stage is beautiful and the sound in this building is excellent. From the orchestra to live theatre, there is a wide variety of shows you can choose from to fit your interests. Watch the Orpheum site to purchase tickets from season ticket holders at a discount!

Educational experiences and history

National Civil Rights Museum: The museum is a reminder of what we’ve gone through as a nation. There is a lot of information here and exhibits covering the mid-twentieth century in America. The moving exhibit is something visitors should take the opportunity to experience, no matter their age or background.

Graceland: Elvis’ home is a glamorous part of the Memphis history that every visitor should experience. The huge entertainment complex is filled with museums, stores, food, presentations and more. Try the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich in the main café and enjoy all the fantastic décor in dramatically decorated rooms. An iPad with headphones will provide you with commentary throughout the guided tour so you can get to know all the sites at Graceland.

Too often, visitors only see a handful of major attractions and miss some of the unique unique places in Memphis. There is plenty to see, do, eat, drink, learn, experience and enjoy in Memphis, but getting off the beaten path is part of the full Memphis experience!

The Crystal Shrine Grotto

Creepy or beautiful? You decide. This man-made grotto was created by a Mexican artist over a period of almost 50 years and depicts the life of Christ. Surrounding the man-made cave is the beautiful 54-acre Memorial Park Gardens.

The River Walk

This five-block-long replication of the Mississippi River is a scaled model you can explore in less than a day. The sculpted area holds over 1.3 million gallons of water, and you can enjoy activities like pedal boat rides or a tour at the museum. Plus, the views here are gorgeous.

Stax Museum

You’ve probably already thought to check out Graceland and Sun Studio, but don’t forget about the museum for American soul music! It contains a rare and impressive collection of over 2,000 artifacts to preserve films, galleries, music, artistry and more. The most impressive item on display might be Isaac Hayes’ custom Cadillac Eldorado, which has a mini-bar, TV and 24-carat gold trim and is lined with white fur carpet.

The Metal Museum

Not the music genre, the art form! This hidden gem in Memphis shows off some very impressive sculpture and exhibits. Look at items created out of metal, everything from knives to jewelry. While you are checking out all of the man-made artifacts, be sure to scope the surrounding views of the bluff where the museum is housed.

Voodoo Café

Find out where this food truck is going to be and make sure you catch it! The truck took first place in the Memphis food truck competition for 2018 and will not disappoint. Many of the locals rave about the coffee (café con leche) and beignets. There are lots of different flavors to try, including Sweet Juju and the Dead Elvis (peanut butter, bananas and bacon).

Beale Street

This eclectic drive is filled with shops, art, cafes, restaurants, bars and so much more. You can spend hours here just exploring the different businesses along the street. Make sure you check out A. Schwab’s — Beale Street’s only remaining original business. It is part museum and part general store and offers locally sourced Memphis merch.

Check out more of our articles to read about the places and people in Memphis! We hope you like the views, flavors and displays that we have here. There is a lot to take in!

Memphis is full of historic landmarks, pavilions, and more. Many of these are still standing and structurally sound after many decades.

The history of Memphis Central Station

Railroads played an important role in the growth of Memphis, which has served as a commercial hub for years.

The railroad transfer in Memphis was a key business transportation advantage among traders who loved the idea of using the train instead of steamboats or road-based transportation. The railroad grew popular during the era of the Civil War, and Memphis eventually became the first railroad junction to connect to Little Rock, Arkansas, which served as a crucial mode of transfer for many.

Grand Central Memphis was opened to the public in 1914. Its original name was changed to Memphis Central Station in 1944, by which point it was serving as a passenger terminal for railroad interstate transfers. Previously owned by the Illinois Central Railroad, the station is a registered passenger terminal of Amtrak and the MATA trolley system at present.

Visiting Memphis Central Station

If you’re interested in checking out this historic railroad station during your Tennessean vacation, you’ll find it on Patterson Boulevard in the Downtown Memphis area. After undergoing a massive makeover in 1998, the Memphis Central Station of today is a completely renovated and restored commercial and passenger hub.

Just a few steps from the Memphis Central Station is the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum, where you can spend hours exploring a variety of exhibits and learning more about the history of the railroad in the city. While most parts of the station have been modernized, the freight tunnel nestled some 300 yards beneath the station still looks the same as when it was built in the early 1900s, and visitors can explore this tunnel and its adjacent baggage room with a museum volunteer.

Beyond history, landmarks and museums, the area is also home to Memphis’ oldest eatery, the Greek-inspired Arcade Restaurant that has been serving its patrons since 1919. You can become its latest patron when you sit down for a hearty lunch and enjoy some classic favorites from the menu. Just a few minutes away, the Memphis Farmers Market offers shopping and dining opportunities for guests of all ages.

Next time you visit Memphis, be sure to visit this historic landmark that played a significant role in Memphis’ economic growth.

When planning a trip to Memphis, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Check out this handy guide of what to do when visiting Memphis.

Where to stay

Talbot Heirs Guesthouse: Talbot Heirs Guesthouse is an ideal home-base to park when visiting the Bluff City. It’s a privately owned, smoke-free, guesthouse that’s home away from home, with some oomph. Located downtown, this offbeat inn is an easy walk to Beale Street, AutoZone Park, and the Rock n Soul Museum.

Talbot Heirs Guesthouse has eight suites, or mini apartments, with all the conveniences you could ask for. An on-site convenient market and parking garage are also available.

Where to eat

Majestic Grille: It’s no wonder Majestic Grille is among the premier Memphis tourist attractions. This quirky restaurant will send you back in time to Old Hollywood, literally. It’s located in a refurbished silent film theater that enthralled Memphis audiences for the first 30 years of the entertainment industry. These days, Beaux Arts décor honor that sophisticated time as owner and award-winning chef Patrick Reilly prepares comfort dishes and classic cocktails in an homage to the era. If that’s not enough, you may think you’ve done a little time traveling as you enjoy the silent films and classic movies playing on the silver screen.

Majestic Grille is an unconventional dining experience that’s a fun way to look back at Memphis’ history.

Where to play

The Peabody: You’ll be amazed to find lots of fun things to do at The Peabody. One of the most renowned Memphis tourist attractions, this opulent hotel has been located a half-mile from downtown since the 1940s. While the building’s architecture is simply stunning, the stars of The Peabody are the ducks. They present a daily spectacle, starting at 11 a.m., by leaving their rooftop home, sauntering down the red carpet to the soundtrack of John Phillip Sousa’s “King Cotton March,” and making their way to the Peabody Fountain to spend the day enjoying the water. The tune starts again at 5 p.m. when the ducks depart the fountain and conduct the processional in reverse. This sight is pure Instagram gold and something you won’t soon forget.

But there’s much more. You can also take a one-hour History Tour of the South’s grand hotel with the Peabody Duck Master. These daily tours give you behind-the-scenes insight of the hotel and a glimpse of just how good the Peabody Ducks have it.

We’re not done yet. You can get sustenance in style before heading out for adventure with weekend brunch. Or how about afternoon tea at Chez Phillipe, the elegant on-site restaurant? In the summer, you can also let your hair down at The Peabody Rooftop Parties.

No matter what you’re looking for, The Peabody offers ample opportunity to have an unforgettable Memphis experience.

Where to visit

National Civil Rights Museum: The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel offers a true, historical experience that educates visitors through multi-sensory and multi-media innovations, artifacts and structures, events, speakers and online resources. Here, guests will gain an understanding of the historical milestones of the civil rights movement and learn how to apply this knowledge to current events in the world today. This is a can’t miss stop on any visitor’s trip to Memphis and truly worth experiencing to understand the history of civil rights and how it continues to impact the culture of Memphis.

With such amazing opportunities, you won’t soon forget your trip to Memphis.

Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and its 4,500 acres offer a range of activities for visitors to enjoy. Here’s a list of some of our favorites.

Fishing, boating and more

Shelby Farms Park is home to more than 20 lakes where individuals can partake in fishing (look out for catfish and largemouth bass), canoeing, paddle-boating and kayaking. If you’re more into relaxation than action, why not take advantage of a park package that bundles a calming time on Hyde Lake with cocktails and delicious treats afterward?

Playgrounds

For visitors with children, the park’s two playgrounds are not to be missed. The woodland discovery playground, which has won international awards for its innovative design, offers six different play nests for children of all ages to explore and play. And when the temperature spikes, look no further than the water play spray ground, complete with a water tunnel and spray jets for kids to splash around supervised. Why bear the intense heat all summer long when you can cool off at this playground?

Dining

Whether you enjoy a long day at the lake or spend time on the playground, you’re sure to work up an appetite at Shelby Farms Park—and the kitchen bistro and the kitchenette are here for you! The kitchen bistro overlooks Hyde Lake, allowing you to enjoy a sit-down meal with a view, while the kitchenette offers quick bites for those who want to eat on the go.

Hiking and biking

Shelby Farms Park contains more than 40 miles of trails where visitors can walk, run, hike and bike alone or with family and friends. This is the ideal place for taking time to discover and explore nature when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Memphis.

Paintball and laser tag

Paintball and laser tag at Shelby Farms Park can be a fun activity for everyone from a small family to a large group. Don’t have your own gear? No problem—equipment is available, and the vast 10-acre outdoor space means you can expect the games to get exciting. Players are divided according to their age and skill level, making this an inclusive activity for all ages.

Zip-lining, swinging and climbing

Shelby Farms Park has an outdoor adventure course where visitors can zip-line, swing or climb through trees—after taking an instructional course on safety, that is. With obstacles that include rope ladders, bridges and swings, get ready to unleash your inner Tarzan!

Events

Venue is one of the most important considerations when it comes to hosting an event. With this in mind, Shelby Farms Park offers distinct indoor and outdoor venues for any type of event, including banquets, concerts and weddings.

Horseback riding

Shelby Farm Park offers horseback riding for people of all ages, with experienced guides on hand. Ponies are a favorite of younger visitors, but people of all ages can enjoy a ride through the peaceful surroundings. In addition to the already affordable price, there is a 10 percent horseback riding discount for park members.

Golf

Ever played disc golf? If not, Shelby Farms Park is a great venue for your first experience, thanks to the 18-hole disc golf course on the grounds. Instead of using golf balls, players use discs to aim for golf baskets.

Shelby Farms Park offers a variety of outdoor activities to choose from. There’s something for everyone—which is your favorite?

One of the most challenging aspects of choosing a place to live is balancing big-city activity and opportunity with small-town affordability and peace. Memphis represents the best of both worlds: a city that hums with activity, but can slow down long enough for you to enjoy it. One of the best places to visit in Memphis is the first-class Memphis Zoo.

Nestled in Overton Park, the zoo originated with the effort to protect a single black bear named Natch. The search for suitable accommodations for Natch unearthed several more exotic animals that also needed housing, and the idea to construct a zoological garden for them and others was born in 1904. The zoo finally opened in 1906 to a delighted public, and additional exotic cats and elephants were acquired shortly thereafter.

Over the last century, the zoo has expanded to 19 exhibits, including seasonal exhibits that showcase animals sensitive to the changing Memphis climate. In addition to lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), you can monkey around in Primate Canyon, get hip to the hippos at Zambezi River Hippo Camp and fish for compliments at the Aquarium.

In acknowledgment of the fact that zoos began as a way to educate the public about animals they might not see regularly, the Memphis Zoo takes its commitment to public education seriously, and each main exhibit features daily chats with keepers. During these chats, staff answer questions about the animals’ natural habitat, their care at the zoo, how the zoo acquired its current population and more. If you or a companion have a special interest in a particular species, don’t miss this chance to talk with the experts. For a bit of the old razzle dazzle, the zoo also offers sea lion shows during which the animals perform tricks that will delight the young and young at heart.

Speaking of children, have you heard about Zoo Snoozes? These programs are the best excuse for zoo enthusiasts to stay up past bedtime, offering moonlight safaris and the chance to get a closer view of the nocturnal animals. The Memphis Zoo also hosts several summer camp experiences for children aged 3 to 13, with specialized programming for every young animal-lover in your family.

From rock ‘n’ roll to overnight delivery, there are so many things that came from Memphis to be thankful for. Here’s a list of just a few:

1) Rock ‘n’ roll

Can you imagine life without rock ‘n’ roll? Elvis and Johnny Cash are just a couple of the Memphis musicians who pioneered this unique music genre—and many of them got their start at the legendary Sun Studio and Stax Records right here in Memphis.

2) Jazz, soul and R&B

Beyond rock ‘n’ roll, Memphis is famous for a host of other musical genres, including jazz, soul and R&B. There’s no better place to enjoy some local tunes than Beale Street, a vibrant thoroughfare lined with bars, clubs and restaurants that also plays host to a wide variety of concerts and music festivals throughout the year.

Things that came from Memphis

3) Self-service grocery stores

The first self-service grocery store quickly became a hit after its Memphis debut—so much so that the chain has grown in number to encompass more than 500 stores today. It may be hard to imagine now, but there was a time when consumers were supposed to hand their order lists to grocery store clerks who would select their products for them. Thank goodness Piggly Wiggly founder Clarence Saunders was around to revolutionize the shopping experience!

4) Unisex hair salons

Nowadays, we take unisex hair salons for granted, but when Sam Ross introduced the concept, it was unthinkable to imagine men and women getting their hair cut at the same establishment. Needless to say, the idea took off.

5) Overnight delivery

Headquartered in Memphis, FedEx changed the delivery game by getting packages from A to B overnight. Anyone who’s ever left their belongings in another city or forgotten a loved one’s birthday is surely thankful for this particular innovation!

6) Budget-friendly hotels

Before he became the founder of Holiday Inn, Kemmons Wilson had a series of disappointing lodging experiences while on a family road trip. After he recognized a market dearth of comfortable yet affordable lodging, he decided to change the game himself. Today, Holiday Inn is one of the largest hotel chains in the world.

7) Bottled soda

Before two lawyers from Tennessee had the great idea to bottle Coca-Cola, people had to go to soda fountains to get their fix. The next time you’re enjoying a bottle of soda, remember you have Memphis to thank!

8) The Modern Grocery Store

You can thank Clarence Saunders for the introduction of the first self-service grocery store. On Sept. 6, 1916 he opened Piggly Wiggly® in Memphis, but with a completely unheard of concept. It was the first time that shoppers could walk grocery aisles on their own and find items to purchase. This broke the traditional shopping mold in which shoppers presented their lists to clerks, who gathered the goods for customers. Saunders noticed this was time consuming and devised the solution that revolutionized shopping.

9) Morgan Freeman

Blockbuster films like “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Bruce Almighty” and even “Lego Movie” wouldn’t be the same without the uber talented Morgan Freeman. The acting legend who continues to make his mark on Hollywood claims Memphis as his birthplace. He was born here June 1, 1937.

10) Justin Timberlake

Speaking of uber talented, Memphis, TN is the birthplace of yet another celebrity. On Jan. 31, 1981, Justin Timberlake was born in this fair city. Since then he’s gone on to be a musical and comedic powerhouse, also delving into movies.

11) Kathy Bates

That’s not all, by a long shot. Celebrated actress Kathy Bates was born in Memphis on June 8, 1948. Her work on “Misery” “Titanic,” and “American Horror Story” are among the numerous roles that earned her to earn Bates critical acclaim.

12) Aretha Franklin

Memphis is also the birthplace of the undisputed Queen of Soul. Aretha Franklin, who demands “R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” was born here March 25, 1942. She went on to dominate the international music scene with her unmistakable voice.

13) The VeinViewer

The VeinViewer was invented in Memphis by Luminetx Technology Corp. The device uses a pulse of infrared light to provide a sort of X-ray of hemoglobin in veins. This allows healthcare workers to be more precise with drawing blood or administering medication.

14) Typewriter Ribbon

Although electronic devices have taken over, some people still love the sound and feel of using a typewriter. Part of what makes it work is the typewriter ribbon, which was invented by George K. Anderson of Memphis, TN. In 1886, he patented the device.

Why visit Memphis? A vibrant, culturally diverse city with everything from a rich history to a booming arts scene that is worth visiting. Memphis is always looking to the future while keeping its storied past sharply in focus. Looking for reasons to pay us a visit? We have a few ideas.

  1. American music history was made here. Few places in the country have a richer musical heritage than Memphis. Visit the Stax Museum to immerse yourself in the history of soul music, or drop by Sun Studios to see where Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash made the records that would change the course of music forever. You’ll understand why major artists like Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake come here for inspiration.
  2. The Memphis food scene is exploding right now. Everybody knows we have great barbecue in these parts—a fact we’re happy to confirm—but there’s a lot more here for foodies that you might expect. Bursting with Cajun-influenced soul food, classic American comfort food, adventurous Asian restaurants, farm-to-table eateries and incredible vegan/vegetarian fare, Memphis’ food scene is growing every day, with new restaurants opening up all the time.
  3. You can walk across one of the largest rivers in North America. Connecting Memphis, Tennessee, to West Memphis, Arkansas, Big River Crossing offers spectacular views of the Mississippi River and the skyline. In addition to being the longest active bicycle/pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi, it connects to 10 miles of multi-use trails on either side.
  4. Southern hospitality is alive and well. You’re not likely to find a warmer and more welcoming place than Memphis. But don’t just take our word for it—”Travel & Leisure” ranked Memphis among the friendliest cities in America in 2016.
  5. Memphis was at the heart of the civil rights movement. Our city’s involvement in the struggle for civil rights is impossible to ignore. Today, as always, Memphis is an oasis of black-owned businesses and features a wide range of historic sites that tell the story of the city’s rich African-American history. Memphis is also home to the National Civil Rights Museum and the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum.
  6. At Graceland, Elvis lives. An essential pilgrimage for rock ‘n’ roll fans, Graceland offers a chance to visit Elvis’ tomb, explore his fascinating life story and tour the house he lived in for years.
  7. You can enjoy live music practically any time. Stroll down Beale Street and you’re sure to be greeted by the sounds of blues, soul, R&B and rock ‘n’ roll pouring out of the countless bars, juke joints, music venues and nightclubs. Most nights, you can choose among dozens of live shows, many of them without a cover charge.
  8. It’s becoming a craft beer capital. Memphis’ growing craft beer scene is a surprise to many visitors, with local brewers like Ghost River Brewing Co., High Cotton Brewing Co. and Wiseacre Brewing Co. producing a steady stream of inventive new brews. Be sure to check out the annual Memphis Brewfest every spring!
  9. You can explore the outdoors. With ample river frontage and 60 miles of bike trails, Memphis has been named one of the best paddling towns in the U.S., as well as America’s most-improved bike city.
  10. The Memphis Zoo is high on just about everyone’s list of things to do in Memphis. With animal exhibits that feature creatures from Africa to China, offering a fun, interactive and educational wildlife adventure is what the Memphis Zoo is all about.
  11. Shelby Farms Park is 4,500 acres of open space with more than 10 miles of urban trail. More than a park, it is an experience and a community treasure.
  12. Beale Street has been dubbed “America’s most iconic street” and is the home of the blues. Trust us, make time to visit Beale Street.
  13. The Crystal Shrine Grotto offers visitors the opportunity to take a walk with life and death. Beauty, art and spiritual mysteries might be experienced here on the grounds of Memorial Park. If you are looking for places to visit in Memphis that are a little out of the ordinary, this could fit the bill.
  14. The National Civil Rights Museum is one of the top Memphis TN attractions, shining a spotlight on a part of history we must never forget.
  15. Gibson Guitar is legendary to the point that you don’t have to be a musician or even a music lover to have heard of it. Tour the factory and don’t just learn how guitars are made but how some of the most iconic guitars in the world are created.
  16. AutoZone Park and the Memphis Redbirds always offer a fun time and a real taste of the Memphis community. Come catch a game if you’re visiting during baseball season.
  17. The Blues Hall of Fame is a must-see for every music fan visiting the home of the blues!
  18. The Memphis climate may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Memphis, but our city’s annual average highs and lows of 72 degrees and 53 degrees respectively, are certainly attractive to many visitors!

If you are looking for food, fun, entertainment, friends or simply an experience of a lifetime, Memphis is the place to go. We always welcome visitors with Southern charm and a smile, and we’re never surprised when they choose to stay!

There are endless reasons to visit Memphis—seriously, we’ve barely scratched the surface—but the only real way to find out is to come and see for yourself. We hope to see you here soon!

When someone mentions Memphis, certain things tend to come to mind: the music, the people and the barbecue, to name just a few. You might not immediately think of the outdoor activities you can enjoy almost year-round thanks to the mild Memphis climate, but we’re here to change that!

Between its natural scenic beauty and its abundance of outdoor entertainment, there are outdoor activities in Memphis that are great to get out and see—whether it’s lit by neon, moonlight or the sun.

Outdoor Activities in Memphis

Beale Street

Although many of the stops along Beale Street are indoors, you’ll likely encounter outdoor live music if you take a nighttime stroll along the famed street. Walk far enough and you’ll come upon Handy Park at Beale and 3rd, which boasts two outdoor music venues that are always free and open to the public.

Overton Park

Overton Park is another place that residents of Memphis love to frequent, located in the heart of Memphis and encompassing 342 acres. No matter what you love to do outdoors, Overton Park offers something for everyone, including a nine-hole golf course, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Rainbow Lake, the Memphis Zoo and a bunch of playgrounds for your little ones. Oh, and the 12-acre Old Forest State Nature Area is thrown in for good measure.

Shelby Farms Park

If you’re looking for great outdoor family fun that is also centrally located, Shelby Farms is one to check out. Explore more than 40 miles of paved and unpaved trails, take fun to new heights and climb through the trees on a treetop adventure course, or saddle up and hit the trails on horseback. There are many more great activities that are offered at Shelby Park Farms. Be sure to check out their website for the whole list!

Mississippi River + Tom Lee Park

A trip to Memphis simply isn’t worth it if you don’t spend some time on the banks of one of the most famous rivers in the world. Ol’ Man River serves as the perfect backdrop for an impromptu picnic, an afternoon stroll or some sightseeing—and the myriad parks along the shore give you ample opportunity to enjoy the Big Muddy.

Mud Island River Park is one of the most popular spots, boasting an exact scale replica of the Lower Mississippi River to explore. Needless to say, there’s a lot to see and do while you learn about the mighty river and what it means to Memphis.

Tom Lee Park was named after a brave resident who saved 32 people when a steamer capsized in the Mississippi in 1925. The park runs along the great river and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline and the river. The park hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Festival and the Beale Street Music Festival. When there are no major festivals, parking is available. However, the park is just a short walk from downtown attractions. Broad pathways provide ample space for walkers and joggers, while the broad stretch of green space is ideal for simply relaxing in the sun, a family game of Frisbee, or other outdoor activities.

Memphis Botanic Gardens

Much of our city’s history is wrapped up in the land upon which the Memphis Botanic Gardens now sit. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to explore the entirety of Audubon Park’s 96 acres in a single visit, guests can stroll through any of the 31 gardens and have a different experience every time.

To plan your route ahead of time, learn what’s blooming in each garden by checking the Memphis Botanic Gardens website. Roses, cacti, herb gardens, conifer stands and irises are just a few of the big draws.

The national pastime

If you love summer and sports, this one’s for you: During baseball season, the Memphis Redbirds are frequently in action at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The family-friendly atmosphere and numerous food options make taking in a game a great way to spend the day with loved ones—and because the Redbirds are the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, you’ll catch a sneak peek of up-and-coming Major Leaguers as they hone their craft.

Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Since 1976, this museum has been home to a splendid Impressionist assortment including works by Pissarro, Monet and Degas. In their will, the late Hugo and Margaret Dixon gave the house and its grounds to the people of Memphis in order to set up this museum. The initial Dixon collection included works by American and French Impressionists. The museum’s traveling exhibits are usually elegant collections based on a certain time period or theme, and although it is small, it is abundant with offerings. The gallery also organizes special concerts and picnics from spring through fall, and most of these are free of charge.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo has often been rated as one of the best zoos in the country both for its abundance of exhibits in a simple layout and for the mere fact that you can get very close to the animals. With a Teton ecosystem with lots of wolves and grizzly bears, a Northwest Passage habitat full of river otters and polar bears, and giant pandas from China, this top-notch zoo will charm adults as well as kids. During winter, festive lights and a skating tent draw the holiday spirit to the zoo. The park is also open for select evening visits.

No matter the time of year, you can always count on great outdoor activities in Memphis.

If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to get around Memphis, this is your lucky day. After a long absence, the trolleys are back! Here’s your guide to our new favorite method of exploring Downtown Memphis.

Welcoming back the trolley

The Memphis Area Transit Authority trolley system began running in 1993. Although the trolleys enjoyed a 21-year run of shuffling locals and tourists through the heart of the city, they haven’t operated in Memphis since 2014, when service was suspended after fires broke out on two cars.

Lucky for us, after extensive repairs, renovations and refurbishment, the trolleys are back! Memphians and visitors alike can once again experience the romance of a vintage trolley car ride along Main Street.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony and inaugural ride on the new trolley system took place on April 30, 2018. Initially, three trolley cars will be in service (a green car, a gold car, and a blue-and-white two-tone car), with more to be added throughout the year. Before you know it, these colorful cars will be a common sight in Memphis, and their whistles blowing will be a familiar sound.

2018 Memphis trolley guide

For now, one trolley line—the Main Street Line—is in operation, running from Butler Avenue to A.W. Willis Avenue past the Convention Center. The Riverfront Line and the Madison Avenue Line will return in the coming years.

The trolleys make 13 stops along the Main Street Line, many of them sheltered, and cars will run once every 20 to 30 minutes depending on the day of the week. A map of the route is available here along with information on the coming-soon Riverfront and Madison Ave. lines, while the MATA website offers details on trolley fares and passes. At the time of publication, a ride on the trolley costs $1 and you can get a day pass for $3.50.

Are the trolleys fast? Well, not exactly. But they are fun, reliable, stylish and will get you from A to B a heck of a lot faster than walking. To be more specific, traveling from one end of downtown to the other via trolley takes half an hour or less.

If nothing else, the experience of rolling through Memphis aboard a vintage trolley car sporting an antique-looking interior and wooden seats is an experience that every visitor to Memphis should have at least once. And if you happen to live here, the trolleys are a great option for getting around and seeing our city in a new way.
