The Legacy of Black Wall Street and Its Lessons for Memphis

Black Wall Street, once thriving in Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Greenwood District, remains a powerful symbol of Black excellence and resilience. In 1921, this community was one of the wealthiest African-American neighborhoods in the United States. Dollars circulated within the community 36 to 100 times and stayed there for nearly a year before leaving, according to historical accounts. This success was no accident—it was intentional. O.W. Gurley, a wealthy African-American entrepreneur, purchased over 40 acres of land in 1906, selling exclusively to other African-Americans, creating a thriving hub for Black business and wealth.

Despite its prosperity, Black Wall Street was tragically destroyed in a violent attack by a white mob, leaving 300 people dead and 800 injured. The district’s fall serves as both a sobering reminder of systemic racism and an inspiring example of what intentionality and community support can achieve.

Memphis, one of the largest majority-Black cities in the United States, shares a similar potential for growth. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 64.2% of the city’s 651,073 residents identify as Black or African-American. However, the reality of Black poverty in Memphis contrasts sharply with the success of Greenwood. The poverty rate for non-Hispanic Black residents in Memphis stands at 33.8%, a stark reminder of the economic challenges faced by the community.

Intentional support for Black-owned businesses in Memphis is one way to bridge this gap. By choosing to shop, dine, and engage with these businesses, consumers and corporations alike can contribute to fostering economic growth, reducing poverty, and creating a stronger, more equitable community. What if Memphis could take lessons from the legacy of Black Wall Street and become a modern-day example of Black entrepreneurship and resilience? The potential is here—it just needs our collective effort.

For Pamela and Sidney of Planeta 777, their journey seems like it was written in the stars. These first-generation Mexican Americans have the youngest Latinx-women-owned business on Broad Ave, a salon and gift shop described as “mystical” where “artistry meets independence.” These two owners love astrology and bringing their culture to the forefront, making this Midtown business a truly unique experience for getting your hair, nails, or makeup done or shopping for some self-care items and goodies.

Q: How has Memphis influenced your creative process and the way you express your cultural heritage in your work?

Pamela and Sidney: Our upbringing in Memphis City Schools (Kingsbury & White Station High School) definitely exposed us to a melting pot of cultures.

Pamela also cites her mama as the reason for working hard and finds creative inspiration in her coworkers and other creatives. Sidney says “finding the beauty” in things inspires her work.

Q: Share a story about a memorable experience or collaboration you’ve had with other Memphis-based artists or entrepreneurs.

Pamela and Sidney:  Our most memorable collaboration would have to be with each other. We both share similar Memphis experiences. Both [of us were] born in Texas but Memphis-raised.

Sidney’s favorite part of the job also lies in getting to know clients and their astrology placements.

Q: In what ways has the Memphis community supported or shaped your journey?

Pamela and Sidney: Our mission at Planeta 777 is to integrate cultures and create diverse spaces like the ones we grew up in.

Pamela’s Mexican roots lie in Ciudad de Mexico, la San Felipe de Jesus and Valle de Guadalupe, and she pulls from CDMX in her creative work. Sidney’s Mexican roots come from Nuevo Leon near Monterrey on her mom’s side and Tampico, Tamaulipas on her dad’s, and she uses the blend of these cultures in her nail artwork and design.

Q: What advice would you give to other creatives and entrepreneurs looking to make their mark in Memphis?

Pamela and Sidney: My biggest advice for anyone looking to make their mark is to find their “why.” What’s [your] true intention? Our why is to inspire future business owners, regardless of the obstacles our background might bring. Like Dolph said, “‘Cause if I want it, [imma] go get it.” A true entrepreneur never takes no for [an] answer. If someone tells you no, you’re probably talking to the wrong person. Believe in your brand and yourself. Trust the process because everything will fall into place.

You can follow Planeta 777 on Instagram, along with Pamela and Sidney‘s own creative Instagram accounts.

This April is Earth Month, with the 22nd marking Earth Day. It’s been 53 years since this day became a holiday, and we wanted to highlight some of the Memphis brands working to improve this planet. Here are local shops and initiatives you should check out!

Sol & Co

Sol & Co. is a Memphis clothing brand that uses recycled materials and ethical practices to make their goods, such as tees, hats, and more. Buy some of your favorite basics from them now online.

Project Green Fork

Project Green Fork is a little different compared to others on the list, as it’s more of a directory of restaurants around the city with green initiatives. It’s a great resource for finding out more about the places you love, like Central BBQ and the Beauty Shop, and their aims for sustainable practices.

Downtown Yoga Memphis

Downtown Yoga Memphis has an online and in-person shop where you can purchase eco-friendly mats and other yoga materials. Plus, these mats were also made by local artists so you can support the 901 in more ways than one.

Downtown Candle Co.

Downtown Candle Co. makes their candles and other home good products with clean materials, like their candles with soybean wax, cedar wood wicks, and essential oils for “toxin-free” enjoyment. They also sell bath bars and room sprays if you want to treat yourself to a little R&R.

Memphis Transformed

Memphis Transformed aims to make the city cleaner and zero net waste. You can help to support their efforts through volunteering or creating your own campaign. Just check out their site to learn more.

2 Chicks and a Broom

2 Chicks and a Broom is a company that works with residences and commercial brands for eco-friendly cleaning and environmentally-responsible products. They focus on providing high-quality work that isn’t damaging to the environment or their customers.

Urban Earth

One way Urban Earth aims to make the world greener is by transforming your yard with natural foliage. It’s proven that indoor and outdoor plants are environmentally friendly, promoting better air and providing nutrients to nearby animals. Check them out to grab some of your own greenery soon.

Since April is Earth Month, you should consider doing your part to keep this planet at its best. Going green can be pretty simple, and there are a ton of ways to start even in your home. From buying “smart” electronics that turn off any energy-wasting appliances and tools to recycling your bottles and cans, small steps make all the difference. Here are some other ways you can make your home in the 901 more sustainable.

Insulate Your Home

Energy efficiency can be as simple as buying the right curtains or installing new windows. Thankfully, there are plenty of spots around Memphis where you can do either. Sun-blocking curtains keep your home cooler and require your AC to do less work, while the right windows can help with winter heat and cool summer air. Try one of these local shops:

Thrift Your Home Goods

Nothing is more sustainable than thrifting. You can find some amazing furniture and other home goods that are gently used or can be restored with a bit of TLC. (Consider using eco-friendly paints and recycled materials during your restoration, also!) Here are some thrift stores around Memphis that will have amazing finds:

Plant a Garden

Planting an eco-friendly garden in your own backyard (or a community garden) is a great way to have fresh fruits and vegetables while also utilizing the leftover water and compost from your home. Plus, you’re adding some greenery into your space which is wonderful for the environment. Here are some places around town where you can buy seeds, gardening tools, and other things you’ll need for this new venture:

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Putting harmful chemicals back into the water or environment can be damaging, so use natural cleaning products that are plant-based or even dye-free. Thankfully, Memphis has quite a few spots in town that will give you exactly what you need for a cleaner home without the toxic ingredients, including cleaning services that will do all the work for you:

Memphis is a musicians’ city, and music stores are crucial in connecting musicians to their fans and providing a physical space where music fans can gather, exchange opinions, browse, and purchase. Today, music is accessible via countless applications and websites that can be accessed in seconds on a a number of devices. But as soaring vinyl and CD sales illustrate, there is something irreplaceably rewarding about owning your own physical music collection.  Record stores, of course, are still the best places to start building your collection and perhaps learning about some new music along the way. Here are five must-visit stores for music lovers of all stripes.

Goner Records
Midtown
2152 Young Ave

A Memphis record label since 1994 and a record store for 18 years, Goner is a tried and true example of an excellent local record store. Goner buys and sells new and used vinyl and has an affinity for Memphis’ unique blend of punk and garage that lifted off their label in the 90s. The label also hosts a successful yearly live music festival, the aptly named Goner Fest, which will soon be celebrating its twenty-first year. Browse their website to check out new stock and staff picks.

Go here to buy: Garage music, punk, and bands with deep ties to the Goner label like King Kahn & BBQ Show, Jay Reatard, and Reining Sound.

Shangri-La Records
Midtown
1916 Madison Ave

This record lover’s wonderland, located in a cute house smack in the center of midtown Memphis, has reigned as one of the country’s best record stores for over three decades. A local favorite for crate digging, Shangri-La is the record store for those who love to get lost in the stacks for hours. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, Shangri-La is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to begin building their Memphis music collection, offering CDs, tapes, and vinyl from Stax, Sun, Hi, and more. Be sure to check out their website for the latest episode of the Shangri-La podcast, which features interviews with local Memphis artists and news about the store.

Go here to buy: All things local (both old and new), soul and R&B, and CDs from every genre

River City Records
Downtown
101 S Main St.

A recent addition to the local music landscape, River City Records is located downtown on Main Street, and helps to fill the record store gap west of midtown. Despite opening in 2021, the store has a wide selection of music that is accessible for locals and tourists alike. A growing selection of new local releases sits near the front of the store, and Elvis records have a special designation.

Go here to buy: New releases of every genre, local releases, cool t-shirts.

Memphis Music
Downtown
149 Beale Street

The aptly named Memphis Music claims to be the largest blues specialty store in the world, and we certainly won’t question this assertion. Located on Beale Street, this store lives up to its historic location by carrying both the latest and greatest in blues, classic rock n roll, gospel, and soul. While Memphis Music carries a selection of albums on vinyl, their selection of new CDs is probably the best in the city.

Go here to buy: Blues music and new CDs.

A. Schwab
Downtown
163 Beale Street

Opened since 1876 (!), A. Schwab is a true Memphis icon and a relic of a bygone era. Although they are best known for a dizzying collection of knick-knacks and sundries, they also have a pretty impressive music collection on the second floor. From Big Star to Junior Kimbrough, Schwab’s has all of your local favorites on CD and vinyl. And given their legacy and location, it wouldn’t surprise us one bit if many of these legendary performers once shopped in the store themselves.

Go here to buy: Must-have regional music on CD and vinyl

While there is certainly truth in the old adage about it being better to give than receive, that doesn’t mean that finding gifts doesn’t come with its own set of headaches. Finding the perfect gift for a loved one doesn’t need to be an added stressor during this already hectic time, though, especially if you have a music lover in your life. We here at WAMM have come up with a short-list of music-related gift ideas that will hopefully help you find the perfect gift you’ve been searching for.

Records

While it’s true that accessing music has never been easier, millions of Americans are returning to the technology of yesteryear: the iconic vinyl record. Yes, the sound quality is inarguably better than anything you will hear from streaming, but there is also something magical about holding a physical piece of music in your hand and being able to study the art work, liner notes, etc. Thankfully, Memphis has some of the finest record stores on earth to make your shopping easier. Shangri-La and Goner Records are both local institutions that boast a wide variety of new and used titles, especially from regional artists. In fact, visitors from all over the world regularly flock to each in the hopes of getting their hands on a coveted record to fill out their collections. Having opened last year, River City Records may be the new kid on the block, but the Main St. shop is also worthy of a visit.

Museum Passes

Stax, Sun, Rock N Soul, the Blues Museum, Graceland…The list of world-class music museums in Memphis is one of our greatest treasures, but these cultural institutions are too often ignored by us locals. Look, I get it…Parisians probably aren’t regularly lining up to see the Louvre either, but a couple of tickets to any of these amazing museums might be the nudge that someone in your life needs to (re)discover these monuments to musical greatness. Also, most of these museums also have great gift shops attached, so you may just be able to kill two birds with one stone.

Instruments

Whether you’re shopping for a seasoned musician or someone just beginning their musical journey, Memphis has several great options for instruments. For guitarists and bassists, it doesn’t get much better than the Memphis Guitar Spa and Ferner Fine Instruments in the Broad Avenue Arts District. The long-standing Memphis Drum Shop is one of the finest in the industry and has served some of the greatest drummers in the world over the past few decades. For a less specialized experience, check out the Midtown Music Shop, Xanadu Music & Books, and Yarbrough’s Music, all of which have a diverse selection and affordable options.

Concert Tickets

Time and again, researchers have concluded that people are happier with experiential purchases over material ones, so maybe this is the year to give someone the gift of live music. From arena-packing stars like Lizzo at the FedEx Forum to more intimate shows like Buddy Guy at the Orpheum, 2023 is shaping out to be another great year for live music in the M-Town. Don’t forget annual festivals such as Mempho and the Beale Street Music Fest as well!

With the holidays officially “in season” it’s time to start making those gift lists (for you and others). Fortunately, Memphis has a thriving small business market that can help you check off everything on that wish list!

Burke’s Book Store

You can’t find rare books at those big-box stores. But you can here! Burke’s has been around 1875 (one of the oldest independent bookstores in the country) and supplies Memphis with a fine selection of new, used, and rare books.

Oak Hall

One of the first ready-to-wear menswear stores in the US, Oak Hall opened in 1859 and has been providing extensive and carefully chosen merchandise to Memphis ever since. Both men and women can find clothes from world-renowned designers. The store is still owned and operated by direct family members of the original owner, so you’re practically guaranteed spectacular customer service.

Dazzle

Those looking for unique accessories, gifts, art, and home accents should definitely put Dazzle at the top of their list. Items are hand-picked for weddings, birthdays, and any-occasion gifts. Patrons rave about the one-on-one customer service and the product knowledge of the employees.

17 Berkshire

17 Berkshire specializes in sweet treats of all sorts. From macarons, gingerbread cookies, and teas – your mouth will be watering the moment you step into the store. The shop also sells cute calendars, stationary, and books.

Cotton Tails Memphis

Opened in 1988, Cotton Tails specializes in “fun and unique children’s clothes.” Miki Brugge, founder and fashion buyer, noticed that start-up companies were producing fresh children’s clothing but couldn’t afford the demands of big-box stores. She decided to create a place where these styles could be shared with the world. Check out the store, either online or in person, for the best in upcoming children’s fashion.

Maggie’s Pharm

Maggie’s Pharm is the best place for those looking for herbs, oils, and mystical objects of all sorts. Great for those who are living a holistic life and/or wanting to explore alternative care methods.

Mrs. Post Stationery

Make this your go-to shop for anything paper related. You’ll find a plethora of cute stationary, coffee table books, calendars, and other stylish items guaranteed to brighten someone’s home.

Happy gift hunting!

Victor Ivan Vega is a bilingual entrepreneur, an active member of the Greater Memphis Chamber of  Commerce, and he is also the founder of the VIC VEGA clothing brand. He was born in Queretaro, Mexico, and migrated to Memphis at the young age of four. “When my mother and I first migrated to Memphis, I remember seeing the pyramid, the bridge, and lights, and I knew right then that Memphis was my home and that one day I would do BIG things for the city,” Vic said. “When I was younger I had to translate a lot for my mother so that built up my confidence and made me very comfortable with adapting to any environment.” Twenty years later, Victor is on the up and up as a fashion designer, entrepreneur, and businessman, releasing his VV brand in 2021, right here in The Bluff City.

We met up with Victor to ask him a few questions and to pay homage to him for his accomplishments in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

What is the Vic Vega brand?

VIC VEGA CLOTHING BRAND is more than just a brand it’s a lifestyle, a wave, and the city’s mentality of Grit N Grind. It is true and authentic. It tells the story of the American Dream and how any day you can wake up and reinvent yourself to go after your goals and dreams.

What inspires the designs and colors?

At VIC VEGA we don’t value profit, we value impact by inspiring and supporting the one that wears VV. Our vision is for our supporters to feel inspired to follow their vision and bet on themselves. The design is very unique: the top Vs represent Memphis and the bottom Vs stand for VIC VEGA. The colors give it that offset look; the black and white stand for understanding and balance.

Have you always had a passion for clothes and design? Why was it important to start your brand here in Memphis?

Yes, I’ve always loved clothing and design. Growing up I would always draw and design. It would often get me in trouble in my math class because I would daydream and draw. I still don’t know how to solve y=mx+b, sorry coach… but hey look at me now! It was very important for me to start the brand in Memphis because this city has so much culture from food to sports, music, and the mentality of Grit n Grind. It’s the most beautiful land in the world and I’m just so happy that I get to represent it throughout my entrepreneurial journey.

How do you want people to feel when they rock Vic Vega Clothing? Are all your clothes unisex?

I hope that they feel inspired and supported because we all need a friend to lean on and that’s what we represent at VV. We have options for everyone and anyone. One day maybe even for our furry best friends!

What’s next for you and the brand?

We are now getting ready to drop our upcoming projects, it’s going to be our best work yet!  It’s going to highlight the city and our youth. We are very excited and can’t wait to share with the world. I’m now being mentored and guided by the best ever since joining the Greater Memphis Chamber, this past summer. I’m also one of the youngest members so I know that there is a lot more learning and growing to do. We have the best team in the country so I’m not worried or stressed. I’ll be ready to step up when my name is called.

We bet you’ve already seen the shelves clear at local stores to make way for school supplies. Though summer doesn’t feel like it’s coming to a close for the kids, the time for back-to-school shopping is creeping up on us all! Don’t fret, though. We’re here with all the information you’ll need so that your little elementary student is as prepared as can be. Here is our guide to getting you through these last days of summer break and onto learning season.

Key Dates to Remember

July 28th through 30th: Tax-free weekend for clothing, school supplies, and computers

Here’s a list of what that includes: School and art supplies with a purchase price of $100 or less per item, such as binders, backpacks, crayons, paper, pens, pencils, and rulers, and art supplies such as glazes, clay, paints, drawing pads, and artist paintbrushes.

August 1st through October 31st: Tax-free month for food & food ingredients

This grocery sales tax suspension will be helpful for packing school lunches, making after-school snacks, and planning ahead for activities. Consider heading to Costco or Sam’s Club to stock up!

Where to Shop

Of course, you could hit up the big-box stores for your clothes, school supplies, and tech (especially since they’ll have some deals) but let’s also consider the local shops in Memphis that you could be supporting! Here are some maybe lesser-known small businesses to stop by during tax-free weekend:

London and York

If your kid has a unique style all their own, London and York is an amazing choice to let their fashion flags fly. This boutique brings a European flair to our little corner of Tennessee, and they offer clothing options for babies, kids, and teens so that your whole family is well-dressed!

Knowledge Tree

This is the place for teachers and students alike to grab what they need for the upcoming school year. Consider this one-stop shop for supplies, tech, and even furniture for your kids’ homework corner!

Spoiled Sweet Boutique

Shoes, clothes, toys, and more, Spoiled Sweet Boutique has all your kid will need for the 2022 school year. Plus, they’re running a summer sale right now, too. Perfect for tax-free weekend deals!

The Art Project

The Art Project is a great place to take the kids to boost their creativity, but did you know they have a retail shop as well? You can shop for a variety of art and school supplies that are perfect for the upcoming school year.

Southern Lace Boutique

For fashionable girls’ clothing, stop by or shop online at Southern Lace Boutique. They even have some items on sale already!

Novel

Depending on which books your kids will need for summer reading or classes, Novel is a great resource. They even offer certain stationery and school supplies from other local Memphis businesses.

Back-to-school doesn’t have to be a drag, especially when Memphis offers so many amazing businesses to support! Set your kid up for success with the right gear, and be sure you check their school’s lists for supplies and any key dates for registration on their website. (Walmart and Target also usually stock lists for certain schools, if you shop in-store.)

Need a guide for your middle-schooler, high-schooler, or even your university-aged kid? Stay tuned for more!

Great floral design should not only reflect the personality of a party, but also inspire energy, connection, and nostalgia among its guests. That’s the philosophy of Verushka Wilson, owner and lead designer of small Memphis floral studio, The Mane Wildling.

Its niche is uncommon creations that elevate the vibe of an event. The Mane Wildling’s unique designs make imperfection look pretty. Its chaotic aesthetic echoes the anarchy of nature through sprawling branches, blooms and bouquets that show beauty in asymmetry. For the nontraditional host or bride, these designs bring just the right amount of crazy to a décor scheme. Verushka launched the brand in 2020 to honor her late grandfather, a Somerville farmer and gardener named Charles “Mane” Coleman.

She built her flower farm on the land he willed to her and her siblings, channeling its generational legacy of wealth, life, and growth. That flower farm now serves as the source of The Mane Wildling’s signature arrangements, each of which is made to order. If you’re planning your next gathering or wedding, check them out!

Peace and love, mane! Email: themanewildling@gmail.com | Instagram: @themanewildling

We’re partnering with Latino Memphis to bring you Somos Memphis! A hub of content focused on sharing all the great endeavors, businesses, and more from Memphis’ Latinx community. The Latinx culture isn’t a monolith–there are so many vibrant cultural aspects, forms of expression, and perspectives that come together to make Memphis the amazing city that it is. We can’t wait to share more stories with you!
Allie Arcos is the creative genius behind Made to Dream! She launched the business earlier this summer and we’re digging her work. She’s created everything from reminders of our childhoods to encouraging and inspiring phrases and we’re so excited to see what’s to come. Want to learn a little more about her and the business? Keep reading!

What’s the background on Made to Dream Co.? How did you get started and what inspired you?

Made to Dream was born out of my passion for art and my wanting to share it with everyone else in a fun, creative way. I have always loved drawing and painting, and during the summer of 2020, I had a lot of time on my hands to look for other creative ways to express myself artistically.
As most of us probably did, I downloaded TikTok on my phone and found myself going down a rabbit hole of what people like myself started doing to pass the time. And that’s where I ran across a community of artists who started small businesses on Etsy during the pandemic and immediately became inspired.
After months of research, trial and error, and trying to figure out what to name my brand, I landed on the name “Made to Dream”. The name, as well as the logo, are not just what represents my business, but also a part of what I personally identify with. Being a Mexican immigrant as well as belonging to what society knows as Dreamers, I decided that I could show others that anything is possible, no matter the apparent limitations. From there, and with that vision in mind, I gathered the courage and took a leap of faith to launch my very own business in June of this year.
I decided to be proud of not only my art but also my identity as a Latina by creating products that showcase my culture as well as my faith and other things I am passionate about. I’m also grateful to say that this has allowed me to not only share my own designs but to make others smile by creating custom pieces!

Your “My Dreams Are Not Illegal” sticker is outstanding. Can you tell us more about the story behind it?

This was one of my very first designs. Before I even knew what to name my business, and it resonated with me for many reasons. The monarch butterfly has become a symbol for immigrants; people who seek a better life and a brighter future for their families, and the term Dream or Dreamers has represented a specific group of young people for quite some time now.
As a Dreamer myself, the phrase “My dreams are not illegal” takes on a meaning that goes far beyond politics; it represents the fact that no matter the limitations or obstacles set before me due to circumstances I had no control over, my dreams, goals and ambitions are always valid. As a Dreamer, I may have to work twice or even three times as hard as the average person next to me to attain them, and that’s okay, because once I get there, I know I’ll cherish it so much more.
I found that this simple phrase was an encouragement and reminder to others that may find themselves in a similar situation that no matter what is set in front of us, the sky is quite literally the limit. More importantly, I have made sure to emphasize that anyone, Dreamer or not, has the right to dream far beyond what might seem attainable, and that those dreams can come true! This particular design is what actually ended up inspiring my business name and logo. Needless to say, this has been my most popular sticker by far, having sold out a couple of times already in my Etsy shop!

How has Memphis’ Latinx community been a part of your own story?

Ah! Where to start? I moved to Memphis back in 2001, when the Latinx community was minimal in our city and to see how much it has grown in the last twenty years has been absolutely amazing. Having attended and graduated from one of the most diverse schools in Memphis, Kingsbury High, I had the opportunity to be exposed to different cultures within the Latinx community. I was also a part of a program Latino Memphis sponsored at Kingsbury at the time and I can truly say that those experiences have greatly shaped who I am today.
In a world where representation is so important, I feel that I have been able to not only share my experiences as a Latina with others, but I believe that I have also been able to make a difference by simply being there to help those in my community. I currently have the privilege to work at a school where the Hispanic population is rapidly increasing and I have been able to serve the Latinx community by helping bridge the gap of communication between parents and school administration. I have been able to talk to students that find themselves questioning their future and be able to encourage them and to let them know that if I did it, so can they. From the school that I work at to the church I attend, I don’t see myself doing anything that doesn’t involve giving back to my community in some way. And there is no place I’d rather be doing this than in my home, Memphis.

If you could give any advice to anyone looking to start a business, what would that be?

It would definitely be to never, ever, limit yourself. Never compare your ideas, creativity, or success to anyone else’s. There were times when I almost talked myself out of starting my own business, where I would think to myself, “What if this turns out to be a huge waste?” or  “What if no one likes what I have to offer?” but then I realized that I would never know if I didn’t try. I trusted God and I believed in myself and didn’t let those negative thoughts and self-doubt take control. Another critical tip that worked for me was to do research and be fully informed of what owning a business entails. Believe it or not, a huge source of information was social media itself. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok have been extremely helpful to find tips, guides and most importantly, communities of people willing to help!

What’s next for you and Made to Dream Co.?

I have so many plans for Made to Dream! Sometimes it’s hard to believe that it’s only been officially a business for a little under three months! I am currently working on a new collection featuring some designs centered around Hispanic Heritage Month and they will be released later this month! As far as a long-term goal, I’d like to be able to expand my products beyond just stickers. I’d like to have my designs printed on shirts, greeting cards, and stationery in the near future and perhaps someday be able to set up a pop-up shop at different events around town. I’d love to expand my brand to be able to work with different organizations in the city to bring even more Latinx representation to the mix!

“Memphis is a majority-black city. You can’t really talk about our heritage – food, history, music, and culture – without highlighting all the greatness that comes from the black community.”

Cristina McCarter and Lisa Brown, the minds behind the City Tasting Box, have the right idea. Since the beginning of the pandemic, this dynamic duo has amplified Memphis’ local food scene by sharing a curated collection of items from a selection of the city’s chefs, restauranteurs, and food artisans.

In February, the team turns the message up even more. The Majority Box is the latest box to join the team’s line up—and it comes with an ever-important message: Memphis’ culture is dependent on its black creators and innovators. This collection of products from black food artisans not only celebrates the “heritage, tenacity, and resilience” of Memphis’ food scene but also provides recipients with an opportunity to support black-owned businesses and get a taste of the Memphis experience.

So, what’s in it? If you’re a Memphian, or you’re a Memphis food expert, these names won’t be unfamiliar. (If you’re not, get ready to fall in love.) You’ll find Pop’s Kernel Gourmet Popcorn, Flying Sobie’s Memphis Gold sauce, Chef Tam’s Black as Midnight blackening seasoning, Cxffeeblack Guji Mane Ethiopian coffee, and Mae’s Gourmet Jam, Elle Elixir’s custom tea blend. Plus, you’ll get some #WeAreMemphis swag to add to your collection!

Cristina and Lisa have not only put effort into creating the box, but the timing couldn’t be better. By releasing this product on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, they’re tapping into one of Dr. King’s central messages: economic empowerment. “Dr. King talked about service and loving our fellow neighbors, but he also talked about economic equality,” says the team. “We are still talking about economic equality. That conversation is not over. $0.65 of every dollar from the Majority Box even goes back into the local economy

Looking to get in on supporting some of Memphis’ black-owned businesses? We knew you would. Get the jump on ordering (and get a discount) by placing your pre-sale order from January 18th to February 1st. Use the presale offer code MAJORITY10 at checkout to get 10% off!

Let’s show some love to our community!

As you may have heard, August is Black Business Month, and there’s certainly no shortage of Black-owned businesses here in Memphis. From lifestyle and beauty brands to tours and restaurants, Memphis is a city full of entrepreneurship. Born out of one beloved Black-owned business, City Tasting Tours, comes a new product that oozes Memphis: City Tasting Box. We caught up with owners Cristina McCarter and Lisa Brown to get the scoop on what City Tasting Box is and why we all need one. Read on to learn more.

How did City Tasting Box get started?

“It started with City Tasting Tours, where we would take people around downtown Memphis to eat, drink, and have a good time,” Cristina says. “Then covid happened, so we had to think of new ways to bring people a taste of the city.” This opportunity also presented itself out of the need to remain a full-time entrepreneur when many were losing their jobs and businesses due to covid-19. In many ways, the City Tasting Box was the ultimate pivot strategy. Back in June, Cristina and Lisa were chatting and the idea for City Tasting Box was born. The concept was simple: it’s a way for Memphians and beyond to safely enjoy local food and drinks, while helping the struggling restaurant industry and food and beverage entrepreneurs. “It’s our way of being able to put a little bit of Memphis in a box and ship it across the nation.”

Have you always wanted to have your own business?

“I always felt I would work for myself, I just thought it would be a different field – a marketing firm or something,” Cristina says. It was through working for Yelp that she got into more of the food and beverage world, specifically focused on Memphis. “The food aspect in Memphis is just as important as music or sports.” She loved the growing food scene and wanted to support and celebrate it – especially when covid it. It was important for her to find a way to continue doing what she loves, because to her, doing what she loves is the ultimate freedom. “The restaurant industry here is my family, and we’ve been talking every week trying to think of ways to help each other, set up delivery, and know what to do next.”

What are the challenges of owning your own business?

For Lisa, the challenge is that City Tasting Box is a side hustle (she has a full time commitment to Memphis Transformed). “The challenge for me has been learning how to pivot into a full-time entrepreneurship role.” Another challenge that has presented itself is managing time and protecting costs so there’s a healthy cash flow. When it came to City Tasting Box, they spent time considering how to give consumers what they really want while keeping the vendors top of mind. “This started because we wanted to help people locally and celebrate Memphis,” Lisa says. For Cristina, the challenge has been managing her two other businesses and, of course, her time. “Time management is the number one thing you have to do, because as a working mom with a family, it can start to feel like too much real quick.”

What can people expect when they order a City Tasting Box?

Buyers of a City Tasting Box can expect a lot of good food! Each box is packing with flavor – sweet, savory, spicy. There’s something in there for everybody. It’s not just small sample sizes either; the box is filled with normal retail-sized products. “We wanted to tell the Memphis classic BBQ story, and we’re going to tout that every day forever,” Lisa says. “But then we also have all these other cool food artisans doing great things and creating new foods in the city, so we’re also telling the story of a contemporary food scene.”

Are you one of those people who holds onto gift cards? Well, Memphians, today’s your day! Saturday, January 18, is National Use Your Gift Card Day.

According to UseYourGiftCard.com, Americans left $3 billion dollars unspent last year. The site is sponsoring the first annual National Use Your Gift Card Day to remind Americans to use their gift cards.

Tracy Tilson, the founder of the UseYourGiftCard.com and National Use Your Gift Card Day, said she started the site after finding some long-lost gift cards.

“The Use Your Gift Card platform began with an ‘ah-ha’ moment,” she said. “I was going through an old wallet and found several gift cards that I had received over the last few holidays and simply forgotten about. On top of that, I discovered gift cards that my sons had been given and ended up buried in desk drawers…all adding up to lots and lots of unspent dollars! I realized that if I’d forgotten mine, certainly many other people were forgetting to use their gift cards, too. I started thinking about reminders: how to remember to use these valuable gifts that friends and family spent their time and money to give! I decided to create National Use Your Gift Card Day, and build UseYourGiftCard.com with the intention of reminding everyone to Use Your Gift Card!”

Tilson decided that every third Saturday in January would be National Use Your Gift Card Day to encourage people to use their gift cards either at a store or shop online before they are lost or forgotten.

Donate Your Cards

Do you have some gift cards that you will never use? Just donate them to a worthy cause like Kars4Kids. Kars4Kids accepts unused gift cards to benefit children. According to the website, “chances are good you have a gift card or two you’ll never use sitting in a drawer, collecting dust. We’ll turn your unused gift cards into a tax deduction for you and a brighter future for a child.”

If you have some used cards with low balances left over, send them to GiftCards4Change. According to the charity’s website, children benefit from the unused gift card balances: “We have experienced the impact that remaining balance gift cards have on individuals and communities in need. Our mission is to collect what is commonly undervalued (low balance gift cards) for the under-served, and build on our efforts to change the way people value their small balance gift cards.”

Dig out those gift cards and use them for yourself or for your community! For more stories on the economy, visit our Business page.

Etsy is a fantastic destination for unique items you just can’t find anywhere else. Many of these items are store quality, yet are handmade by independent artists. With the creativity blood flowing through Memphis, dozens of exceptional individuals have taken their craft to Etsy. Some of these people have their own storefronts and websites, so if you’re in town, you may be able to visit them. However, if you want to order products directly from the Etsy platform while you’re at home, or if you’re away from Memphis (or if the creator doesn’t have a brick and mortar store), here are some cool Memphis items you can buy on Etsy right now.

Are you looking for a piece of wall art that looks great and still brings a bit of industrialization into your home? If so, map wall art is a great option for you. There are grid maps that will show off the city street-map grid. It’s often strangely beautiful how this grid unfolds. There are also several fantastic presentations for this. While you can find a number of these, the MEMPHIS Tennessee map art deco canvas print by Map Horizontal Wall is fantastic. Just the slight additional art deco border is enough to make it really pop (for all artists’ links, check out the “Additional Reading” section below).

Memphis has a beautiful skyline. A number of artists online sell representational prints for the skyline, but one of our favorites is the Memphis Skyline Art Print by WindbyArtshop. It has a whimsical look to it, as if you found it in a children’s book somewhere. And if you have a high-quality printer on hand, you can download it directly from the website and print it without ever paying for shipping.

Made in Memphis

Show off your city pride with some Made in Memphis T-shirts and other clothing items. You can find everything from baby clothing to adult sizes. It’s fun, simple and yet always the perfect way to show off your city pride, whether you’re walking the streets of Memphis, New York, Detroit or Las Vegas. With plenty of color options and print styles, there’s something here for you.

Now’s the perfect time to add to your Memphis collection

You don’t need to physically be in Memphis to purchase great items made by local artists. And many of the best Memphis items are not sold at large stores. Instead, these are made by lovers of Memphis who want to show off their pride in the city and share it with you. These listed items are a handful of the cool Memphis objects you can purchase through Etsy, but make sure to sift through the items. You never know what great independent designer materials you’ll find on the website.

Thanksgiving is a rare opportunity for rest and relaxation across Memphis, particularly once the oven has cooled from Thanksgiving dinner, the mountain of dishes has been bested, and the relatives have all gone their separate ways. With the long weekend at hand, it’s the perfect time for Memphians to enjoy all the fun and beauty that the city around them has to offer.

There are countless Memphis events and businesses worth investing your precious time off—so many, in fact, that you may feel overwhelmed by all the choices. If you’re floundering for things to do during Thanksgiving break, try one of these Memphis options.

Go to the Memphis Zoo

Established in 1906, the Memphis Zoo is a long-standing Memphis attraction sure to provide an enjoyable day trip for any Memphian. It was first built to house Natch, the black bear mascot of the Memphis Turtles baseball team, but other animals were later added to the facility to create the Memphis Zoo as we know it today.

The Memphis Zoo has a host of animals from all over the world for visitors to enjoy, including elephants, pandas, tigers, polar bears, penguins, tropical birds and hippopotami. Don’t miss the three baby animals currently in the zoo’s care: a baby orangutan named Rowan, a baby sloth named Lua and a baby hippo named Winnie.

Visit an art gallery

For Memphians who want a taste of art and culture over the long weekend, a visit to one of Memphis’ many art galleries is sure to sate that urge. Consider the following Memphis art museums to find one that’s right for you:

  • The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art: As both the largest and the oldest art museum in Tennessee, this local landmark holds everything from modern art to rare antiquities
  • The Dixon Gallery and Gardens: Specializing in porcelain and impressionist art, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens boasts permanent collection of more than 2,000 art pieces intended to show the public the beauty of not only art but also gardening.
  • The Metal Museum: This museum’s exhibits exclusively feature art made out of metal. It’s the only museum of its kind in the country, and it features all sorts of metallic creations.

Volunteer your time

Thanksgiving is a time of year where families get together, express their thanks and participate in luxurious meals. Needless to say, the holidays can make us aware of what we have to be thankful for and how much we can give to others. For Memphians who would like to give back this holiday season, there are a number of Memphis volunteer opportunities at MIFA’s Meals on Wheels, the Memphis Crisis Center, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital and more.

As anyone who’s lived here or visited knows, Memphis is a city with a rich history. It seems any and every place in Memphis has a story of both beginnings and endings, births and rebirths, all while having a faithful following of Memphians trailing behind. Restaurants, shops, hotels – you name it, and Memphis probably has a generations-old, beloved icon of it.

One such place in Memphis, a favorite of many students attending nearby universities and book lovers alike, is Burke’s Book Store. While there is certainly a wide variety of locally owned stores in the Memphis area, Burke’s is one of those classic Memphis gems that has become a staple in the Cooper-Young neighborhood as well as the broader community. Having occupied four different locations around the city since it opened in 1875, Burke’s Book Store has certainly seen its fair share of beginnings and endings and even close calls as brick-and-mortar book stores continue to be phased out by online retailers and e-book readers.

Well known for both its collectible books (signed copies, first editions, rare books, etc.) as well as its wide collection of many of the latest, most popular titles, Burke’s Book Store carries an impressive collection of Memphis-focused literature. From a strong collection of history books on the city of Memphis to recently published works authored by Memphians, Burke’s masterfully curates a literary reflection of the mid-south appealing to both newcomers and lifelong Memphians.

Burke’s also hosts a variety of events, one of which included a conversation with international best-selling author John Grisham (who, in case you didn’t know, wrote a book about Memphis that was made into a movie that was later filmed in Memphis and starred Tom Cruise!). Of course, you’ll find the usual bookstore staples of postcards, notebooks, artisan book marks, and other knick knacks, all with a uniquely Memphis flair.
