You’ve seen itineraries giving you the lists of everything a tourist should do while visiting Memphis, but how many of those “must-dos” are things Memphians actually like to do? While everyone has their own ideas of spending the perfect day in the 901, we’ve asked around and compiled an itinerary filled with some of the most popular things to do in Memphis!

Wake Up at Central Station, Arrive, or Caption by Hyatt

Start your day by waking up in one of Memphis’ favorite hotels. Whether you choose Central Station, Arrive, or the Caption by Hyatt, you’re guaranteed a comfortable and stylish beginning to your day.

  • Central Station: Located in a former train station, this hotel offers a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. The vibes are enriched with the sounds of Memphis, including curated playlists that celebrate the city’s musical heritage. Keep reading for more reasons to love this space!
  • Arrive: This boutique hotel is known for its contemporary design and laid-back vibe. The rooms are spacious and stylish, and the hotel’s location in the South Main Arts District makes it a great starting point for your adventure. Don’t miss out on Hustle + Dough’s pastries and coffees plus the lobby bar’s delicious craft cocktails. If you’re getting some remote work done, this is a great place to do it!
  • Caption by Hyatt: Combining the best of both worlds, this hotel offers a welcoming atmosphere with thoughtful design. It’s perfect for travelers looking for a blend of comfort and style, with a focus on sustainability and local culture. Plus you can also start and end your day in their lobby that serves great breakfast, coffees, and cocktail drinks after 3!

Breakfast and Coffee at Sunrise or City + State

After a restful night, head out for a delicious breakfast to fuel your day. Memphis has some fantastic breakfast spots that are sure to delight your taste buds, here are two that Memphians love!

  • Sunrise: Known for its Southern-inspired breakfast dishes, Sunrise is definitely a local favorite. Whether you’re in the mood for biscuits and gravy, fluffy pancakes, or a classic breakfast platter, this spot has you covered. Seriously, don’t leave without trying a chicken biscuit or bloody mary!
  • City + State: Just looking for coffee and another place that’s great to take an online meeting? City + State is such a good option! They’ve got creative coffees and teas, ample seating and outlets, plus there’s a boutique attached filled with the best local and nationally-recognized brands.

Morning Shopping at Saddle Creek

After breakfast, head over to Saddle Creek for some shopping. This shopping center offers a mix of high-end retailers, local boutiques, and specialty stores. Whether you’re looking for the latest fashion trends, unique gifts, or just window shopping, Saddle Creek provides a pleasant and relaxing shopping experience. We definitely recommend going into the locally-owned Nail Bar and Co. for a little self-care!

Brunch at Biscuits and Jams

If you’re still hungry or simply looking to enjoy a leisurely brunch, make your way to Biscuits and Jams. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious Southern-style brunch dishes. The menu features a ton of mouthwatering options, including their famous biscuits, hearty omelets, and sweet jams made from local ingredients. If you’re leaning on the lunch side of things, the chicken pesto sandwich is a 10 out of 10.

Lunch at Gus’ Fried Chicken or Cozy Corner BBQ

As midday approaches, it’s time to savor some of Memphis’s iconic cuisine. Just because they’re well known, doesn’t mean they aren’t delicious!

  • Gus’ World Famous Fried Chicken: Known for its crispy fried chicken, Gus’ is a must-visit for any food lover. The chicken is perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection, served with classic Southern sides like coleslaw and baked beans, but you’re going to want to get mac and cheese too.  Fun fact: The Front Street location was the first franchise location ever before coming a Memphis and then nationwide favorite!
  • Cozy Corner BBQ: Everyone knows Memphis has great BBQ, but you don’t want to just eat at the touristy spots. For real BBQ that tastes like someone made it in their own kitchen at home, head to Cozy Corner BBQ. This family-owned restaurant is renowned for its mouthwatering ribs, pulled pork, and barbecue sandwiches (and some of the best potato salad in the city).

Afternoon Visit to Crosstown Concourse

After lunch, spend your afternoon exploring Crosstown Concourse, a vibrant and multi-purpose space housed in a former Sears building. This impressive facility features a mix of art galleries, shops, restaurants, and community spaces. You can browse through unique shops, admire local art, or simply relax in one of the many communal areas. The architecture alone is worth the visit, blending industrial elements with modern design to create a truly unique atmosphere!

Spring in Memphis is great for enjoying the outdoors, seeing the sights, and getting some exercise. Want to know what can make it even greater? Bringing along your pet! Fido and Fluffy deserve some time in the sun, too. (Though let’s be real, who’s giving their pet these names anymore?) If you’re looking for somewhere to bring along your furry friend, here are some pet-friendly parks here in Memphis that they’ll be sure to enjoy!

Shelby Farms Park

You’ve no doubt heard about Shelby Farms Park and its huge area for pups. Your dog can run around off-leash and explore the area, maybe even jump into one of the ponds and lakes for a swim! (Just make sure to use their washing station and bring along some towels for the car ride home.) This is a wonderful pet-friendly area of over 100-acres that also allows you both to enjoy nature and get moving. Shelby Farms also has seasonal events with pet-friendly days, so check out their calendar!

Overton Park

Their dog area is also known as Overton “Bark” and we can always appreciate a good pet pun. With separate areas for different sizes of dogs and water fountains for when they inevitably get thirsty, this space is enclosed and perfect for any breed! It’s open every day from dawn to dusk, and there’s a place to sit in case you’d rather watch your pup have their best day ever.

Mud Island

For another place in Memphis where your dog can let out some energy, Mud Island Dog Park is the place to go. They can enjoy some off-leash fun near downtown, making it easy to pop by a pet-friendly restaurant on your way back. Plus, Mud Island is an awesome place for exploration, which we all know dogs love to do. Let them sniff some new smells and maybe even meet a few new friends down there!

Memphis Dog Park

This is Memphis’ first city-run dog park, and it’s great for those canines who love obstacle courses and agility areas. With two fenced-in areas for a variety of dog sizes, your pup can enjoy this space that also provides biodegradable bags for those unavoidable accidents. How nifty is that? Just make sure your dog is up to date on their vaccines before going.

Bartlett Dog Park

Here’s another enclosed area that allows dogs to run around and be carefree. (Because let’s face it, sometimes our pets don’t always listen very well and we need somewhere with a fence!) There are even benches for you and trees for shade so that neither of you gets too warm in the springtime sun. It also allows separate spaces for bigger and smaller dogs, making sure that your pup interacts with friends their own size!

A Dog Day in Memphis

There are so many great places to bring your pet in Memphis. This city really is pet-friendly, you just have to find the spots. Lucky for you, though, we plan on exploring more areas of the city that allow you to bring along your animals, so stay tuned for more! Then you can truly plan a dog’s day out here in the 901.

Summer is upon us, and we Memphians are ready to rock— outside, with some great tunes, for as many warm months as the weather Gods will allow. Whether you prefer to hear gypsy jazz in a historic cemetery or celebrate Juneteenth at the historic Orange Mound Tower– we have the outdoor concert recommendation for you! Here are 5 unique outdoor concerts not to miss this month in Memphis.

The New Respects

Saturday, June 11th

7:30 p.m.

The Overton Park Shell

The Overton Park Shell is a mini utopia for outdoor music enthusiasts. See our recent venue profile describing the venue’s magic here. Siblings Zandy, Darius, Lexi, and their cousin Jasmine kind of fell into being in a band together— but they will dance and rock your face off  on stage all night. A bonus is Zandy’s searing rock ‘n’ roll guitar solos!  The New Respects will play as part of The Shell’s free outdoor music series on June 11th, so bring a picnic and some cold beverages- or just yourself, and rock out with this high energy family band.

Blues On Beale: Rodd Bland & The Members Only Band

Wednesday, June 15th

7:00 p.m.

Handy Park

It is embarrassing to admit, but sometimes it’s a challenge to find blues music on Beale Street. So many DJ’s, country bands, cover bands, and soul bands play Beale nightly that it can get a bit saturated— but if you miss that real Memphis blues groove, this is the series for you…AND it’s outside! Handy Park located on Beale Street has an amazing stage and graded lawn for you to grab a beer and some wings and watch your favorite blues band play. Rodd Bland (the son of iconic musician Bobby “Blue” Bland) is blues royalty and he’s just off his recent Blues Music Award win for Best Emerging Artist Album. Come check him out and be put in a whole Memphis mood.

Tone’s Juneteenth Festival

Sunday, June 19th

Orange Mound Tower

Tone’s Juneteenth Gala and Festival weekend never disappoints. The entire weekend and schedule of events will feature live music performances- but the biggest opportunity for live outdoor music is at the Orange Mound Tower on Sunday, June 19th. Although the music and DJ lineup has yet to be announced— rest assured it will be epic… everything Tone does is!

Songs In The Cemetery: Amy Lavere

Friday, June 24th

5:30 p.m.

Elmwood Cemetery

Believe it or not, the historic Elmwood Cemetery hosts many activities for the living! This month, their ongoing series Songs In The Cemetery hosts one of Memphis’ favorite singers and bass players— Amy Lavere. The Memphian by way of Louisiana is most likely a fan of celebrating life in the Southern tradition of an old -fashioned, respectful cemetery picnic. Bring a lawn chair and watch the sun set on one of the longest days of year!

Live At The Tracks: Max Kaplan

Thursday, June 30th

6:30 p.m.

The Central Station Memphis

Rufus Thomas said it best when he said,  “Ooooh– wee, that Memphis train!” The Central Station Memphis, A Curio Collection Hotel, is unique in and of itself. Inside, there are many opportunities to revel in the history and traditions of Memphis music, but Thursday, June 30th you can sit track side outside and relax to the acoustic offerings of blues and Americana artist Max Kaplan. Grab a drink at the bar and take in downtown just off of South Main Street.

With Memphis being a heavy pet-friendly city, there’s more than likely a dog park not too far from your home. My canine diva child, Chilombo, absolutely enjoys social interaction with both dogs and other people and enjoys playing and running around without constraints. If your dog is similar to her then an off-the-leash dog park is certainly a place for your pup.

She’s an energetic, playful, mouthy 1- year- old German Shepherd.

She has such a huge personality! She lets me know when she approves of a dog park with her lively gestures, such as constantly wagging her tail, running full speed, her ears stand straight up and she sticks her tongue out with so much excitement. (As pictured below.)

Dog parks are a great resource for dog owners and can improve social skills amongst your pet. Living in a 1 bedroom apartment, it’s imperative that Chilombo has an opportunity to run off her built-up energy and socialize with other doggies. Check out the list below to find some of Chilombo’s favorite dog friendly spots around The Bluff City!

Mud Island Dog Park

Sponsored by Memphis-based pet supply retailer Hollywood Feed, Mud Island Dog Park is a dog’s dream. Mud Island’s dog park includes lots of space, a small/large dog area, shaded canopies, a water spray mister and water fountains. Mud Island Dog Park is right on the Mississippi River and has beautiful views for both doggies and their owners to enjoy.

Overton Bark

Presented by the Overton Park Conservancy and Hollywood Feed, Overton Bark has areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, and a natural wood-chip & grass surfacing. The area includes water fountains, obstacles, and clean-up stations. Rustic log benches provide a natural seating area for people to relax while their dogs socialize.

 Memphis City Dog Park

Memphis City Dog Park was the first city-run dog park to open in 2010. Located behind the Memphis City Schools Board of Education, the park features two fenced in dog areas and biodegradable bags are provided for waste cleanup. We recommend bringing a water jug in this Memphis heat because there is no water service at this park.

Central Bark

Central Bark is located right in the heart of Downtown Memphis. Central Bark includes automatic dog water bowls, a separate area for small/big dogs, benches and poop stations to clean up after your furry friend. The park is fenced-in and a great place for your dog to socialize.

Shelby Farms Dog Park

Shelby Farms Dog Park is like no other. This dog park is the equivalent to the saying, “…like a kid in a candy store!” This incredible dog park provides more than 100 acres designated for off-leash activities for you and your furry friend. The park features multiple ponds, trails, a water fountain and washing station. Dogs can run, socialize, sniff, swim, explore and play.

As you can see from the photos, my German Shepherd is a fan of all parks that allow her to run and socialize. We know there are dog parks galore here in the 901. Let us know in the comments where you and your pup like to go on a sunny day to unleash!

As the weather gets warmer, Memphians of all stripes are flocking outdoors to parks, patios, and playgrounds to soak up a bit of sun. Whether you’re looking for exercise, entertainment, or simple relaxation, Memphis’ riverfront offers a variety of options for everyone. While we always recommend exploring and making your own adventure, here are five of our favorite activities to enjoy on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi.

Walk or Bike Across Big River Crossing

If you haven’t already, we highly suggest making the trek into West Memphis via Big River Crossing, the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi River. In addition to offering breathtaking views of Downtown Memphis, Big River Crossing allows visitors access to a series of trails and parks on the Arkansas side of the river, including the 70-mile Big River Trail. If you want to bike but don’t have access to a bicycle, there are two Explore Bike Share stations along the Crossing – one on the Arkansas side and one on the Tennessee Side.

Visit the Metal Museum and the Chickasaw Heritage Park

Photo via Memphis Heritage

For those looking for something a bit off of the beaten path, we suggest visiting the Chickasaw Heritage Park located just south of Downtown. Once you turn the corner, you’ll immediately notice two giant earthen mounds that were once used for ceremonial purposes by the Chickasaw. The mounds offer some amazing views of the river, and are an important reminder that this riverfront has been an important asset to people for hundreds of years. Directly across the street is the Memphis Metal Museum, a haven for the metalsmith community that features a museum, sculpture garden, and more.

Catch a Concert at the Harbor Town Amphitheater

Photo via River Series at the Harbor Town Amphitheater

You can’t really make a list about things to do in Memphis and not include music, can you? We certainly don’t think so, and one of our favorite places to catch a show is at the Harbor Town Amphitheater, particularly the annual River Series. Located behind the Maria Montessori School, the amphitheater is an intimate venue with stunning views of the river and Downtown. To keep track of all of the upcoming shows, be sure to check out https://www.riverseries.org/ , but be warned, tickets can go fast!

Pack a Picnic (or Join a Pick-Up Game) in Tom Lee Park

Tom Lee Park is the heart and soul of Memphis’ riverfront and the annual home to major events such as the Beale Street Music Fest and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. However, even when not hosting an event, Tom Lee Park offers a plethora of options for visitors. Lined with walking trails, exercise equipment, and basketball courts, Tom Lee is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities, but is just as accommodating to picknickers, book readers, and nappers. Whatever you’re looking for, Tom Lee Park has got you covered.

Grab a Beer (and Toss a Football) at Grind City Brewing Company

Photo via Grind City Brewing Co.

Located along the banks of the Mississippi River in Uptown, Grind City Brewing Company is the perfect place to end your day of river-side activities. Hailing a great selection of craft beers and a TON of outdoor space, Grind City is one of Memphis’ newest craft breweries and the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your friends, family, or dog (or all three!). We’re especially fond of their Viva Peach, a gluten-free bourbon barrel-aged lager that packs a punch.

Lights. Camera. Climate action! In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we’re digging deeper than the “well said” soundbite or your “well-done” weekly recycling. All you’ll need is a bit of elbow grease and your own patch of earth.

The theme for Earth Day 2020 is climate action, and following in the footsteps of the 20-million Americans who took to the streets in 1970 to protest environmental ignorance and demand a new way forward for our planet, we’re not letting the COVID outbreak get in the way of us celebrating and achieving gold. So this year, we’re taking the fight to our home gardens. Gardening has already proven to provide stress relief, and with 90 percent of us under stay-at-home orders, there’s been a resurgence in victory gardening. According to CBS, victory gardening “was a homefront craze during the World Wars, when Americans were encouraged to grow their own produce to supplement rations.” Joining in on the trend is the perfect way for individual families to unite in a demonstration of support for environmental protection.

To start getting your socially-distanced, idle-hands on board, check out this list of easy vegetables to grow and this free Memphis planting calendar, where you’ll find the best dates for planting and transplanting. Here are some other great local resources to get your Earth Day 2020 victory gardening activities underway.

  1. Dan West Garden Center: Founded in 1952, as a small feed and seed store primarily serving the farm community in East Memphis, Dan West Garden Center offers expert advice on how to care for your garden, trees, shrubs, and plants.
  2. Flora Memphis: Self-professed plant obsessors, Flora Memphis aims to invigorate current plant lovers while enticing more Memphians to become plant-obsessed. They provide instructional content curated from the world-wide-web with images from their Instagram feed mixed in.
  3. Memphis Area Master Gardeners (MAMG): Comprised of over 2,496 certified Tennessee Master Gardeners, the “master Gardener program seeks to improve the lives of Tennesseans by promoting environmental stewardship, non-commercial food production, and human health and well-being through horticulture education and outreach delivered by a dedicated and skilled volunteer network.” Don’t miss their Memphis Kitchen Garden Planting Guide
  4. Memphis Garden Club (MGC): Formed in 1921, MGC seeks to advance and encourage the knowledge and practice of horticulture and the design and development of gardens. The Horticulture Committee holds meetings periodically, as announced in the MGC newsletter. Programs include propagation, plant identification, bulbs, herbs, roses, and more.
  5. Memphis Horticultural Society (MHS): Founded in the late 1980s by a group of passionate local plant enthusiasts, MHS is focused on the study of plants and the exchange of information among the members on care, cultivation, propagation of plants, and garden design.
  6. Shelby County Extension Service: The official website of Shelby County offers an extensive list of publications with everything you need to know about home gardening, lawn, and landscape care.
  7. Urban Earth: Located in Midtown Memphis’ Flicker Street Art District, Urban Earth is a welcoming, community-minded resource for plants and garden materials and garden design, creation and management.

If you’re not ready to get down and dirty, you can still celebrate Earth Day by implementing these simple tips to live a more sustainable lifestyle!

With over 160 parks and 3,000 acres of green spaces, Memphis is a paradise for both nature-lovers and families. Maintaining all of these areas is the City of Memphis Division of Parks and Neighborhoods. This incredible organization does a lot for the city, so we wanted to take a closer look.

The City of Memphis Division of Parks & Neighborhoods: A Primer

When it comes to parks, Memphis has a lot more going on than you may realize. The Division manages a wide array of facilities and spaces, including aquatic centers, golf ranges, the Memphis Zoo, and the Memphis Botanical Garden. Simply put, if it’s outdoors, the Division manages it.

History of the Parks Division

Since 1900, when the Parks Commission was first founded, green spaces have been an integral part of Memphis’ DNA. George Kessler, a famous architect of the era, had grand plans for parkway systems throughout the city, much like eastern metropolises like New York and Boston. One of his developments that stands to this day is his parkway system that connects Overton and Riverside Parks. Currently, this area is listed in the National Historic Register.

Since then, the city has expanded with parks and outdoor activities in mind. Concert venues, community centers, and other recreational facilities have become integral to both the city and the Division, making Memphis even more special.

Services & Other Features

When visiting one of the 167 parks in Memphis, you’ll be amazed at how well they are maintained. The Division takes pride in providing the best care and attention to each space, ensuring that everyone gets to benefit.

Hours of Operation

During the summer, all parks are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (March 15th through October 31st). In the winter, the hours are shortened from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sports

If you or your kids are interested in athletics, the City of Memphis offers free league play for softball, baseball, kickball, soccer, and flag football. There are child and adult divisions — be sure to check out which parks host which leagues.

In addition to hosted sports, there are numerous tennis courts, golf ranges, and skate parks within the city.

Rentals

While all parks have a “first come, first serve” rule, citizens can rent specific areas for a small fee. Many of the parks are ideal for celebrations both big and small, from birthday parties to large corporate events.

Highlighted Parks in Memphis

Realistically, there’s no way you can see all 167 parks in the city. Here are our top picks.

Overton Park – 1914 Poplar Ave

This 342-acre area houses multiple attractions, including the Levitt Shell (outdoor amphitheater), Memphis Zoo, and the Memphis College of Art.

Shelby Farms Park – 6903 Great View Dr

Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the U.S. With 4,500 acres you can explore 40 miles of trails that are great for walking, biking, running and hiking.

Mississippi Greenbelt Park – 830 Island Dr

The Mississippi River is a landmark in its own right, but this park is the perfect blend of water and greenery. There is also a 1.5-mile trail ready to explore.

Memphis Botanic Garden – 750 Cherry Rd

While the zoo is fun, the Botanic Garden is a natural wonder. There are 31 different gardens within its borders, and each one is magnificent. From butterflies to cacti and succulents, you’ll experience the best that nature has to offer.

Find Out More Here

The City of Memphis Division of Parks and Neighborhoods is an incredible organization that does a lot of good for the city. Find out more information about what they do, and find a park near you. Explore Memphis the right way.

Looking for a great place to explore your natural surroundings or cap off your Tennessee travel experience? T.O. Fuller State Park is one of Memphis’ coolest hidden treasures and is surprisingly easy to reach. Here’s why you’re missing out if you haven’t gotten to know this amazing resource.

A history-making park

State parks are probably among humanity’s greatest cultural developments, and what better way to enjoy something than to ensure that it’s preserved for future generations that might want to relive the experience? T.O. Fuller, however, also adds to the novelty by giving visitors a chance to walk in the footsteps of history.

T.O. Fuller State Park was only the second U.S. state park that admitted African Americans, and its facilities were actually built to cater to African Americans. While building the park, workers discovered the Chucalissa site — a complex of mounds, villages and plazas that were home to Mississippian native peoples thousands of years ago.

Dr. Thomas O. Fuller

The modern park took its name from Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, a pioneering leader who spent decades fighting for equality and representation at a time when disparity was the rule of law. Today, anyone can enjoy hiking, camping, sports or educational activities on the grounds, and since it’s the only state park within Memphis city limits, it’s one of the best local opportunities to get outdoors.

Getting to know T.O. Fuller today

How do Memphian nature lovers take advantage of this amazing park? With more than 1,100 acres to explore, there’s no shortage of adventures to tackle:

Check out Chucalissa

Get acquainted with the lifestyle of those who came to Memphis long before you. This is a great starting point to explore T.O. Fuller — you can explore hands-on archeology with your kids, learn more about the native plant and animal species that call the park home, or see one of the East Coast’s best-preserved prehistoric settlements.

T.O. Fuller State Park trails are easy and enchanting.

Hit the trails

A network of well-maintained trails weaves through T.O. Fuller, so it’s the ideal place for a casual walk or intense run. Thanks to the heavily forested surroundings, it’s easy to put the urban hustle on pause for a moment as you reconnect with yourself, nature or your dog. Most of the trails here are easy to moderate, so take your time and enjoy the shade.

Go camping

Whether you prefer roughing it or relaxing in a recreational vehicle, T.O. Fuller State Park accommodates. For those who prefer creature comforts, about $35 will get you laundry and bathhouse access, power, a grill site and other modern conveniences.

Why haven’t you visited T.O. Fuller State Park yet?

From playing tennis and watching migratory birds to discovering unequaled vistas or cooling off with a summer swim, T.O. Fuller is a great example of how Memphis always has something to offer. Whether you’ve made this city your home or are just passing through, this spot should definitely make it onto your itinerary.

Appreciating creativity

Here are some places for sparking your imagination by observing and listening.

Art museums

Memphis is home to a number of notable art museums, including:

  • The Brooks Museum (18th through 20th-century art), 1934 Poplar Ave.
  • AMUM, the Art Museum of the University of the University of Memphis (works from ancient Egypt to present), 3750 Norriswood Drive
  • The Metal Museum (metalworks, foundry and blacksmithing), 374 Metal Museum Drive
  • The Belz Museum of Asian and Judaic Art (historical and contemporary), 119 South Main St.

Garden strolls and art

Winter is a good time to heighten awareness of landscaping shapes, colors and textures (think bark, bare branches and berries) that we often don’t appreciate when blooms are abundant. Enjoy a winter stroll at Memphis Botanic Garden, 750 Cherry Road, and check its website for outdoor art exhibits (Origami in the Garden2 through March) and special events like the Jan. 25 Incognito! Art Auction fundraiser.

Downtown mural walks

Take a virtual walk online or an actual one downtown in search of the city’s famous murals, from “The Sound of Memphis” to “I Am a Man.” The downtown Memphis website provides details.

Positively Creative Series lectures

In the spring, Memphis College of Art, 1930 Poplar Ave., will host a series of talks about subjects including entrepreneurial blogging, fashion design, and maximizing social following on websites like Instagram.

Babies at the zoo

What can be more creative than birth? The Memphis Zoo, 2000 Prentiss Place, invites you to visit three new babies — Winnie the hippo, Rowan the orangutan and Lua the Linne’s two-toed sloth.

Being creative

Memphis is home to a number of organizations that encourage you to be creative in a hands-on way. Here goes.

Events and skill camps for creatives

Creative Works, 516 Tennessee St., is an organization that provides a wide variety of networking and learning events as well as a marketplace for creatives. It’s a good place to connect with creative types including animators, entrepreneurs, graphic artists, marketers and screenwriters. Events range from free pub network gatherings to 16-hour skill camps (about $1,000) and an annual creativity conference.

Crosstown Arts, 1350 Concourse Ave., is another organization that promotes creativity with exhibits, presentations and workshops by many kinds of artists, including writers and musicians. It offers residencies as well as community art making areas.

Innovative workspaces and incubators

ArtUp, 138 St. Paul St., is a business hub for entrepreneurial creatives including artists, chefs and designers. It offers lofts and mentoring for about 20 residents in its incubator program as well as support for creatives who don’t live there.

Creativity and mentoring aid the success of all startups. The “Memphis Business Journal” provides a detailed list of local business incubators, including Emerge Memphis, which offers tenant space and technical assistance programs.

Mid-South Makers, 2804 Bartlett Road, is an organization that provides makerspace (aka “hackerspace”) for people who love to tinker and invent. It’s a good place to meet other makers, share ideas and collaborate on projects.

Check out Crosstown Arts Shared Art Making for access to shared art-making facilities and equipment in digital arts, music, woodworking, printmaking, and photography. This space is open to all types of artists – from professionals to hobbyists!

Musical gigs

Love to sing? Perk up your pipes and maybe your picking skills at the Memphis Songwriters open mic nights. They’re held Monday through Thursday nights and Saturdays at coffee houses, restaurants and taverns throughout town.

If you enjoy performing classical works, the Memphis Symphony, 610 Goodman St., holds choir auditions twice a year. If you have some training, give it a go.

Becoming aware of opportunities

Never stop looking for opportunities to experience and practice the arts and innovation. Memphis is a great place to grow creatively.

#WeAreMemphis and we heart our city’s art.

It bears repeating: A nightly light show on the Mississippi River is a sight to see! Memphis is one of the few places in the U.S. that offers a great vista from the banks of the famous waterway. The light show is one of the ways that visitors can enjoy the city and see it from a unique perspective.

The Harahan, Big River Crossing and Hernando de Soto bridges, which span over the river, can be seen in a different way, literally, every night. The bridges are illuminated nightly to provide a visual feast for the eyes. If you have never seen this sight, now is the time to consider a stop in Memphis to enjoy what others in the city have known for some time.

About Bridge Lighting

Travel across the mighty river was made easier with the construction of the Harahan bridge. Opened in 1916, it is the oldest of the three spans that takes traffic to points north, south, east and west to and from Memphis. It was the main thoroughfare for the city until construction of the Memphis-Arkansas bridge and Interstate 55 was completed in 1949.

The span, which was rebuilt in 1928 after fire destroyed the original structure, has been a landmark for many decades. The De Soto Bridge was introduced in 1973 and set to lights in 1986, while Big River Crossing, unveiled in 2016, has attracted more than 300,000 visitors for its nightly lights.

What the Nightly Light Show Offers

The nightly light shows on these bridges give you a compelling reason to spend time at the city’s Riverfront. The bridge lighting has inspired residents and visitors to come out and explore all that the city has to offer through a wonderful display of these architectural marvels. The shows themselves are put on and managed by a privately funded nonprofit, Memphis Bridge Lighting, Inc., which was formed about the time Big River Crossing bridge was unveiled to the public in 2016.

Plan to Take in the Lights

Plan on spending some time in Memphis doing the things that everyone does in this great city. Set aside a night or two with the family or special someone in your life and come sit on the river’s edge. The illumination of the city’s bridges, a tradition that is nearly three decades old, is a great way to unwind, explore Memphis at night, and see the city in a way you may not have thought of doing. A nightly light show on the Mississippi River is a sight to see and a sight you should see!

Explore Bike Share has come to Memphis, TN, and is taking the city by storm with a bike-sharing network sure to help Memphians get their blood pumping and their heart rates up just in time for the sweltering heat of summer to be coming to a close. So, now that Explore Bike Share has opened its doors, how can visitors and residents make use of its bike network and transit hubs?

For those of you who have never used a bike-sharing network before, here’s what to know about Explore Bike Share before taking your first cycling trip.

What is bike sharing?

A bike-sharing program is a service that involves bikes being stored in transit hubs across a city and made available to rent through the use of an app. Such programs give users the freedom associated with having a bike without the hassle of managing the upkeep. Although bike-sharing was conceived in Amsterdam in 1965, with free-use white bicycles left unchained throughout the city, it wasn’t until 1995 that bikes were made available to rent through a coin-operated payment system. Similar programs soon followed suit and the practice has grown exponentially, with many bike-sharing programs owning over a thousand bikes per city.

About Explore Bike Share

Explore Bike Share is a bike-sharing network that has recently come to Memphis, setting up shop so Memphians from all walks of life can enjoy a little cycling to break up their daily routine. Whether you’re a fitness junkie, a tourist, a commuter or anyone else interested in using a bike to get around, Explore Bike Share is waiting for you.

The Explore Bike Share system is broken down into four easy steps on the company’s website:

  • Pay: Users can pay through the Explore Bike Share app on their phones, which makes the transaction quick and easy.
  • Pick up: Users can pick up their bicycles at any of Memphis’ 60 bicycle hubs.
  • Pedal: Enjoy your time on the bike! If you’re looking to explore, visit memphistravel.com to find the best Memphis attractions.
  • Put up: Just bring the bike back to any designated bike station and continue with your day.

Anyone interested in making use of the Explore Bike Share network can rent a bike per use or on a weekly, monthly or yearly basis.

Improve your quality of life with bike sharing

The benefits of cycling are well documented and include improvements to both physical and mental health. Indeed, people who bicycle regularly often notice mood boosts from exercise and exposure to sunlight while also experiencing improved lung function, reduced heart disease and cancer risk, increased muscle growth and weight loss. What’s more, regular cycling is said to improve navigational skills, spatial awareness and brain power.

All across the nation, lush national parks and natural pieces of wilderness lay tucked away, just waiting to be explored. Memphis too has its own natural beauty, with state parks, urban camping centers, and more all within a few hours of the city. So, where are the best places to go camping in Memphis TN? Below are a few of the best Memphis campgrounds, just waiting to be discovered.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Inspired by the eponymous cartoon, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is a family campground created to provide outdoor fun for the whole family. Conceived in 1969, these campgrounds feature mascots like Yogi and Boo Boo from the Hannah-Barbera cartoon, and they host dozens of captivating attractions to entertain attendees. With pedal bikes, jump pads, inflatable slides and more, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is a must-see campground for families looking to get away from the city and experience a whirlwind vacation.

Campus^, an Urban Oasis

Originally an Airbnb market experiment, Campus^ is an urban camping experience that mixes outdoor camping with the culture of downtown Memphis. Located on Carolina St. across from Wayne’s Candy Co., Campus^ allows visitors to relax in the great outdoors within walking distance of some of Memphis’ great downtown attractions. Hidden behind a large black gate and a grove of trees, Campus^ is invisible to all but those looking for it, meaning it’s just cut off enough from downtown Memphis to offer a reprieve from the hustle and bustle.

Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park

No matter what sort of camping experience you’re looking for, Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park can provide. A quintessential camping location, this park offers vacation cabin rentals, group campgrounds and 49 individual campsites with grills, tables and electric and water hookups. Summer is ending, which means the advent of fall is well underway. And while summer is known as a time for vacations and excursions, the changing of the seasons should never mean Memphians have to abandon fun trips and weekend events.

Celebrate the Culture of Japan in Memphis

Celebrate Diversity at the Memphis Pride Parade

So, as summer passes and seasonally appropriate expeditions come to an end, what Memphis events can weekend explorers find to do this fall?

Honor the history and culture of Japan

The Memphis Japan Festival is one of many cultural events that takes place in Memphis every year. Attendees will have the chance to watch Sumo wrestlers and other Japanese martial art masters showcase their skills, celebrate Japanese dance, and partake in Japanese foods and sweets. Attendees can also visit merchants stationed at the festival and get their very own taste of Japan as they experience Japanese clothing, entertainment, artwork and much more.

The Memphis Japan Festival takes place Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Memphis Botanic Garden.

Watch the Tigers or the Redbirds play at home

When fall is on the horizon, so is football. As the football season in Memphis starts up, consider heading down to Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium to catch the Memphis Tigers playing at home. If football isn’t your style, you could go support the Memphis Redbirds, the Minor League Baseball team of Memphis. Though the baseball season is already well underway, it runs through the beginning of September, so there are more than enough games left for prospective attendees to enjoy themselves at AutoZone Park.

Celebrate Diversity With Mid-South Pride

One of the largest civic celebrations in Memphis, Mid-South Pride is a a celebration of the LGBTQIA community. The 15th annual Mid-South Pride is expected to be a blowout celebration of unity and love for everyone in Memphis this fall.

Mid-South Pride takes place Sept. 28–30, with different events occurring each day at Tom Lee Park.

Get a glimpse of the past at the Memphis Mid-South Renaissance Faire

Journey back to the Renaissance era by visiting the Mid-South Renaissance Faire in Memphis this fall. Inspired by the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the Mid-South Renaissance Faire is staged as a festival celebrating the queen’s visit to a little village. Attendees can enjoy festival food, watch jousting and other performances, participate in Medieval carnival games and even be “knighted” by the queen. Entry is $12 for adults and $6 for children.

The Mid-South Renaissance Faire takes place at USA Baseball Stadium & Park Oct. 13–14 and Oct. 20–21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and its 4,500 acres offer a range of activities for visitors to enjoy. Here’s a list of some of our favorites.

Fishing, boating and more

Shelby Farms Park is home to more than 20 lakes where individuals can partake in fishing (look out for catfish and largemouth bass), canoeing, paddle-boating and kayaking. If you’re more into relaxation than action, why not take advantage of a park package that bundles a calming time on Hyde Lake with cocktails and delicious treats afterward?

Playgrounds

For visitors with children, the park’s two playgrounds are not to be missed. The woodland discovery playground, which has won international awards for its innovative design, offers six different play nests for children of all ages to explore and play. And when the temperature spikes, look no further than the water play spray ground, complete with a water tunnel and spray jets for kids to splash around supervised. Why bear the intense heat all summer long when you can cool off at this playground?

Dining

Whether you enjoy a long day at the lake or spend time on the playground, you’re sure to work up an appetite at Shelby Farms Park—and the kitchen bistro and the kitchenette are here for you! The kitchen bistro overlooks Hyde Lake, allowing you to enjoy a sit-down meal with a view, while the kitchenette offers quick bites for those who want to eat on the go.

Hiking and biking

Shelby Farms Park contains more than 40 miles of trails where visitors can walk, run, hike and bike alone or with family and friends. This is the ideal place for taking time to discover and explore nature when you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Memphis.

Paintball and laser tag

Paintball and laser tag at Shelby Farms Park can be a fun activity for everyone from a small family to a large group. Don’t have your own gear? No problem—equipment is available, and the vast 10-acre outdoor space means you can expect the games to get exciting. Players are divided according to their age and skill level, making this an inclusive activity for all ages.

Zip-lining, swinging and climbing

Shelby Farms Park has an outdoor adventure course where visitors can zip-line, swing or climb through trees—after taking an instructional course on safety, that is. With obstacles that include rope ladders, bridges and swings, get ready to unleash your inner Tarzan!

Events

Venue is one of the most important considerations when it comes to hosting an event. With this in mind, Shelby Farms Park offers distinct indoor and outdoor venues for any type of event, including banquets, concerts and weddings.

Horseback riding

Shelby Farm Park offers horseback riding for people of all ages, with experienced guides on hand. Ponies are a favorite of younger visitors, but people of all ages can enjoy a ride through the peaceful surroundings. In addition to the already affordable price, there is a 10 percent horseback riding discount for park members.

Golf

Ever played disc golf? If not, Shelby Farms Park is a great venue for your first experience, thanks to the 18-hole disc golf course on the grounds. Instead of using golf balls, players use discs to aim for golf baskets.

Shelby Farms Park offers a variety of outdoor activities to choose from. There’s something for everyone—which is your favorite?

One of the most challenging aspects of choosing a place to live is balancing big-city activity and opportunity with small-town affordability and peace. Memphis represents the best of both worlds: a city that hums with activity, but can slow down long enough for you to enjoy it. One of the best places to visit in Memphis is the first-class Memphis Zoo.

Nestled in Overton Park, the zoo originated with the effort to protect a single black bear named Natch. The search for suitable accommodations for Natch unearthed several more exotic animals that also needed housing, and the idea to construct a zoological garden for them and others was born in 1904. The zoo finally opened in 1906 to a delighted public, and additional exotic cats and elephants were acquired shortly thereafter.

Over the last century, the zoo has expanded to 19 exhibits, including seasonal exhibits that showcase animals sensitive to the changing Memphis climate. In addition to lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), you can monkey around in Primate Canyon, get hip to the hippos at Zambezi River Hippo Camp and fish for compliments at the Aquarium.

In acknowledgment of the fact that zoos began as a way to educate the public about animals they might not see regularly, the Memphis Zoo takes its commitment to public education seriously, and each main exhibit features daily chats with keepers. During these chats, staff answer questions about the animals’ natural habitat, their care at the zoo, how the zoo acquired its current population and more. If you or a companion have a special interest in a particular species, don’t miss this chance to talk with the experts. For a bit of the old razzle dazzle, the zoo also offers sea lion shows during which the animals perform tricks that will delight the young and young at heart.

Speaking of children, have you heard about Zoo Snoozes? These programs are the best excuse for zoo enthusiasts to stay up past bedtime, offering moonlight safaris and the chance to get a closer view of the nocturnal animals. The Memphis Zoo also hosts several summer camp experiences for children aged 3 to 13, with specialized programming for every young animal-lover in your family.

In terms of transit and accessibility, the Memphis Zoo is right in Midtown, with buses stopping by regularly. Street parking is also available, granting easy access to one of the nation’s oldest and finest zoos.

Your exploration of the cultural treasures of Memphis is just beginning. After you visit the zoo, why not check out the other things Memphis has to offer?

When someone mentions Memphis, certain things tend to come to mind: the music, the people and the barbecue, to name just a few. You might not immediately think of the outdoor activities you can enjoy almost year-round thanks to the mild Memphis climate, but we’re here to change that!

Between its natural scenic beauty and its abundance of outdoor entertainment, there are outdoor activities in Memphis that are great to get out and see—whether it’s lit by neon, moonlight or the sun.

Outdoor Activities in Memphis

Beale Street

Although many of the stops along Beale Street are indoors, you’ll likely encounter outdoor live music if you take a nighttime stroll along the famed street. Walk far enough and you’ll come upon Handy Park at Beale and 3rd, which boasts two outdoor music venues that are always free and open to the public.

Overton Park

Overton Park is another place that residents of Memphis love to frequent, located in the heart of Memphis and encompassing 342 acres. No matter what you love to do outdoors, Overton Park offers something for everyone, including a nine-hole golf course, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Rainbow Lake, the Memphis Zoo and a bunch of playgrounds for your little ones. Oh, and the 12-acre Old Forest State Nature Area is thrown in for good measure.

Shelby Farms Park

If you’re looking for great outdoor family fun that is also centrally located, Shelby Farms is one to check out. Explore more than 40 miles of paved and unpaved trails, take fun to new heights and climb through the trees on a treetop adventure course, or saddle up and hit the trails on horseback. There are many more great activities that are offered at Shelby Park Farms. Be sure to check out their website for the whole list!

Mississippi River + Tom Lee Park

A trip to Memphis simply isn’t worth it if you don’t spend some time on the banks of one of the most famous rivers in the world. Ol’ Man River serves as the perfect backdrop for an impromptu picnic, an afternoon stroll or some sightseeing—and the myriad parks along the shore give you ample opportunity to enjoy the Big Muddy.

Mud Island River Park is one of the most popular spots, boasting an exact scale replica of the Lower Mississippi River to explore. Needless to say, there’s a lot to see and do while you learn about the mighty river and what it means to Memphis.

Tom Lee Park was named after a brave resident who saved 32 people when a steamer capsized in the Mississippi in 1925. The park runs along the great river and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline and the river. The park hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Festival and the Beale Street Music Festival. When there are no major festivals, parking is available. However, the park is just a short walk from downtown attractions. Broad pathways provide ample space for walkers and joggers, while the broad stretch of green space is ideal for simply relaxing in the sun, a family game of Frisbee, or other outdoor activities.

Memphis Botanic Gardens

Much of our city’s history is wrapped up in the land upon which the Memphis Botanic Gardens now sit. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to explore the entirety of Audubon Park’s 96 acres in a single visit, guests can stroll through any of the 31 gardens and have a different experience every time.

To plan your route ahead of time, learn what’s blooming in each garden by checking the Memphis Botanic Gardens website. Roses, cacti, herb gardens, conifer stands and irises are just a few of the big draws.

The national pastime

If you love summer and sports, this one’s for you: During baseball season, the Memphis Redbirds are frequently in action at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The family-friendly atmosphere and numerous food options make taking in a game a great way to spend the day with loved ones—and because the Redbirds are the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, you’ll catch a sneak peek of up-and-coming Major Leaguers as they hone their craft.

Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Since 1976, this museum has been home to a splendid Impressionist assortment including works by Pissarro, Monet and Degas. In their will, the late Hugo and Margaret Dixon gave the house and its grounds to the people of Memphis in order to set up this museum. The initial Dixon collection included works by American and French Impressionists. The museum’s traveling exhibits are usually elegant collections based on a certain time period or theme, and although it is small, it is abundant with offerings. The gallery also organizes special concerts and picnics from spring through fall, and most of these are free of charge.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo has often been rated as one of the best zoos in the country both for its abundance of exhibits in a simple layout and for the mere fact that you can get very close to the animals. With a Teton ecosystem with lots of wolves and grizzly bears, a Northwest Passage habitat full of river otters and polar bears, and giant pandas from China, this top-notch zoo will charm adults as well as kids. During winter, festive lights and a skating tent draw the holiday spirit to the zoo. The park is also open for select evening visits.

No matter the time of year, you can always count on great outdoor activities in Memphis.

The Mississippi River can be found throughout American history, mythology and folklore. Whether you’re charting its mighty course with “Huckleberry Finn” or drifting away to the lonesome chords of the Delta blues, the Mississippi River’s pull is impossible to resist.

Although the river is a fixture of everyday life in Memphis, that does nothing to diminish its power. Why not head to Big River Crossing and experience the allure of the mighty Mississippi for yourself?

Crossing the Big River

At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi, as well as America’s longest active rail, bicycle and pedestrian crossing. The bridge connects Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee, with Main Street in West Memphis, Arkansas, tying together a 10-mile corridor of both cities’ walking and biking routes. Like the river itself, Big River Crossing is at the heart of Memphis’ great urban playground.

Big River Crossing opened in 2016, and untold thousands have enjoyed this free attraction since then. It offers sweeping views of the Mississippi River and the Memphis skyline up past South Bluffs and Beale Street Landing, with ships passing underneath throughout the day and trains regularly rolling along the adjoining railway bridge.

Memphis on the Mississippi

Step off the Tennessee side of Big River Crossing and you’re practically in the middle of downtown Memphis. The Memphis Riverfront is mere footsteps away, with urban walking trails and sweeping bluff-top views from Martyrs Park. What’s more, bike lanes on Front Street make it easy for cyclists to get just about anywhere in the downtown area, including countless local shops and eateries.

Grab a snack and a hot cup of joe at Bluff City Coffee & Bakery, try a local craft beer or two at Ghost River Brewery, browse the Memphis Farmers Market or head to Central BBQ to find out for yourself why Memphis is so famous for its ribs. These establishments and many more are within about a mile of Big River Crossing, and you don’t have to go much farther to hit the Beale Street Historic District—home of the blues and endless possibilities.

As for the other side of the river, there’s some cool stuff in West Memphis, too. Be sure to make time for Big River Trail, which connects to Big River Crossing and offers a chance to explore the beautiful riverside landscape. The trail follows the levee alongside the Mississippi River, and its construction is an ongoing project. Once completed, it will stretch along more than 1,600 river miles.

Big River Crossing is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is available to cyclists and pedestrians free of charge. Check out the bridge around sunrise, sunset, holidays and other special events to see it sparkle with more than 100,000 Philips LED lights, creating a truly brilliant display.
