Ready for some awesome outdoor fun? Shelby Farms Park has got it all! Covering over 4,500 acres, it’s one of the biggest city parks in the country. You can do all sorts of cool stuff here, like biking, hiking, and even horseback riding along the super scenic trails. Take a chill walk around the beautiful lakes or set up a picnic in one of the many lawns or pavilions. Make sure your little ones check out the Woodland Discovery Playground’s climbing courses, slides, and even interactive water play. Shelby Farms Park is perfect for families who love adventure and being surrounded by nature! 

Memphis Zoo

Make unforgettable memories at the Memphis Zoo, home to more than 4,500 animals from all over the world. Rated as one of the best zoos in the country, the zoo offers interactive exhibits, educational programs, and an extensive selection of animals. Children will be captivated by the opportunity to see lions, tigers, giraffes, and many other species up close. The zoo also features the Teton Trek exhibit, where visitors can experience wildlife like wolves, bears, and more. The Peabody Ducks 

You definitely can’t leave Memphis without witnessing the Peabody Ducks at The Peabody Hotel. Every day, these adorable ducks march their way through the lobby. Make sure to get there early and grab a spot near the red carpet. You’ll even get to hear the Duckmaster share some of the hotel’s history before the ducks make their grand entrance. The Peabody Ducks have become a symbol of Memphis, and this experience will leave a lasting impression on both kids and adults!

Spring in Memphis is great for enjoying the outdoors, seeing the sights, and getting some exercise. Want to know what can make it even greater? Bringing along your pet! Fido and Fluffy deserve some time in the sun, too. (Though let’s be real, who’s giving their pet these names anymore?) If you’re looking for somewhere to bring along your furry friend, here are some pet-friendly parks here in Memphis that they’ll be sure to enjoy!

Shelby Farms Park

You’ve no doubt heard about Shelby Farms Park and its huge area for pups. Your dog can run around off-leash and explore the area, maybe even jump into one of the ponds and lakes for a swim! (Just make sure to use their washing station and bring along some towels for the car ride home.) This is a wonderful pet-friendly area of over 100-acres that also allows you both to enjoy nature and get moving. Shelby Farms also has seasonal events with pet-friendly days, so check out their calendar!

Overton Park 

Their dog area is also known as Overton “Bark” and we can always appreciate a good pet pun. With separate areas for different sizes of dogs and water fountains for when they inevitably get thirsty, this space is enclosed and perfect for any breed! It’s open every day from dawn to dusk, and there’s a place to sit in case you’d rather watch your pup have their best day ever.

Mud Island

For another place in Memphis where your dog can let out some energy, Mud Island Dog Park is the place to go. They can enjoy some off-leash fun near downtown, making it easy to pop by a pet-friendly restaurant on your way back. Plus, Mud Island is an awesome place for exploration, which we all know dogs love to do. Let them sniff some new smells and maybe even meet a few new friends down there!

Memphis Dog Park

This is Memphis’ first city-run dog park, and it’s great for those canines who love obstacle courses and agility areas. With two fenced-in areas for a variety of dog sizes, your pup can enjoy this space that also provides biodegradable bags for those unavoidable accidents. How nifty is that? Just make sure your dog is up to date on their vaccines before going.

Bartlett Dog Park

Here’s another enclosed area that allows dogs to run around and be carefree. (Because let’s face it, sometimes our pets don’t always listen very well and we need somewhere with a fence!) There are even benches for you and trees for shade so that neither of you gets too warm in the springtime sun. It also allows separate spaces for bigger and smaller dogs, making sure that your pup interacts with friends their own size!

A Dog Day in Memphis

There are so many great places to bring your pet in Memphis. This city really is pet-friendly, you just have to find the spots. Much like us, our pets are ready to be back outside… and social! 

With Memphis being a heavy pet-friendly city, there’s more than likely a dog park not too far from your home. My canine diva child, Chilombo, absolutely enjoys social interaction with both dogs and other people and enjoys playing and running around without constraints. If your dog is similar to her then an off-the-leash dog park is certainly a place for your pup.

She’s an energetic, playful, mouthy 1- year- old German Shepherd. 

She has such a huge personality! She lets me know when she approves of a dog park with her lively gestures, such as constantly wagging her tail, running full speed, her ears stand straight up and she sticks her tongue out with so much excitement. (As pictured below.)

Dog parks are a great resource for dog owners and can improve social skills amongst your pet. Living in a 1 bedroom apartment, it’s imperative that Chilombo has an opportunity to run off her built-up energy and socialize with other doggies. Mud Island Dog Park

Sponsored by Memphis-based pet supply retailer Hollywood Feed, Mud Island Dog Park is a dog’s dream. Mud Island’s dog park includes lots of space, a small/large dog area, shaded canopies, a water spray mister and water fountains. Mud Island Dog Park is right on the Mississippi River and has beautiful views for both doggies and their owners to enjoy.

Overton Bark

Presented by the Overton Park Conservancy and Hollywood Feed, Overton Bark has areas for large and small dogs, water fountains, and a natural wood-chip & grass surfacing. The area includes water fountains, obstacles, and clean-up stations. Rustic log benches provide a natural seating area for people to relax while their dogs socialize.

 Memphis City Dog Park

Memphis City Dog Park was the first city-run dog park to open in 2010. Located behind the Memphis City Schools Board of Education, the park features two fenced in dog areas and biodegradable bags are provided for waste cleanup. We recommend bringing a water jug in this Memphis heat because there is no water service at this park.

Central Bark

Central Bark is located right in the heart of Downtown Memphis. Central Bark includes automatic dog water bowls, a separate area for small/big dogs, benches and poop stations to clean up after your furry friend. The park is fenced-in and a great place for your dog to socialize.

Shelby Farms Dog Park

Shelby Farms Dog Park is like no other. This dog park is the equivalent to the saying, “…like a kid in a candy store!” This incredible dog park provides more than 100 acres designated for off-leash activities for you and your furry friend. The park features multiple ponds, trails, a water fountain and washing station. Dogs can run, socialize, sniff, swim, explore and play.

As you can see from the photos, my German Shepherd is a fan of all parks that allow her to run and socialize. We know there are dog parks galore here in the 901. Let us know in the comments where you and your pup like to go on a sunny day to unleash!

As the weather gets warmer, Memphians of all stripes are flocking outdoors to parks, patios, and playgrounds to soak up a bit of sun. Whether you’re looking for exercise, entertainment, or simple relaxation, Memphis’ riverfront offers a variety of options for everyone. While we always recommend exploring and making your own adventure, here are five of our favorite activities to enjoy on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi.

Walk or Bike Across Big River Crossing

If you haven’t already, we highly suggest making the trek into West Memphis via Big River Crossing, the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi River. In addition to offering breathtaking views of Downtown Memphis, Big River Crossing allows visitors access to a series of trails and parks on the Arkansas side of the river, including the 70-mile Big River Trail. If you want to bike but don’t have access to a bicycle, there are two Explore Bike Share stations along the Crossing – one on the Arkansas side and one on the Tennessee Side.

Visit the Metal Museum and the Chickasaw Heritage Park

For those looking for something a bit off of the beaten path, we suggest visiting the Chickasaw Heritage Park located just south of Downtown. Once you turn the corner, you’ll immediately notice two giant earthen mounds that were once used for ceremonial purposes by the Chickasaw. The mounds offer some amazing views of the river, and are an important reminder that this riverfront has been an important asset to people for hundreds of years. Directly across the street is the Memphis Metal Museum, a haven for the metalsmith community that features a museum, sculpture garden, and more.

Catch a Concert at the Harbor Town Amphitheater

You can’t really make a list about things to do in Memphis and not include music, can you? We certainly don’t think so, and one of our favorite places to catch a show is at the Harbor Town Amphitheater, particularly the annual River Series. Located behind the Maria Montessori School, the amphitheater is an intimate venue with stunning views of the river and Downtown. To keep track of all of the upcoming shows, be sure to check out https://www.riverseries.org/ , but be warned, tickets can go fast!

  Pack a Picnic (or Join a Pick-Up Game) in Tom Lee Park

Tom Lee Park is the heart and soul of Memphis’ riverfront and the annual home to major events such as the Beale Street Music Fest and the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest. However, even when not hosting an event, Tom Lee Park offers a plethora of options for visitors. Lined with walking trails, exercise equipment, and basketball courts, Tom Lee is the perfect place to enjoy outdoor activities, but is just as accommodating to picknickers, book readers, and nappers. Whatever you’re looking for, Tom Lee Park has got you covered.

Grab a Beer (and Toss a Football) at Grind City Brewing Company

Located along the banks of the Mississippi River in Uptown, Grind City Brewing Company is the perfect place to end your day of river-side activities. Hailing a great selection of craft beers and a TON of outdoor space, Grind City is one of Memphis’ newest craft breweries and the perfect place to spend an afternoon with your friends, family, or dog (or all three!). We’re especially fond of their Viva Peach, a gluten-free bourbon barrel-aged lager that packs a punch.

2. Memphis Botanic Garden

Undoubtedly, The Memphis Botanic Garden is one of the most beautiful and serene spaces to visit at any time of year, but visiting in the fall to take in the beautiful foliage puts this scenic and immaculate Botanic Garden on another level!  The 96 acres of gardens and trails contain a huge variety of trees displaying fall foliage in late October to early November. For a small admission fee, you and your family can take in the amazing surroundings, snap a few photos for the gram, and then, as we suggest, put the phone away and soak up the environment and intentional beauty that surrounds you.

3. Reelfoot Lake State Park

Nestled in the Northwest corner of Tennessee, and just a short two hour drive from Memphis, is Reelfoot Lake State Park, one of the most beautiful places for fall outdoor activities. To take in the majestic beauty of the this incredible natural sanctuary, we suggest that you Enjoy one of the “Fall color” pontoon cruises that typically take place on the weekends during October and November on Reelfoot Lake. Trails and other pathways surround the lake, so if you wish to enjoy the natural landscape without commentary, Reelfoot lake state park will provide a special serenity that will bring you a beautiful display of fall foliage, as well as much needed time in the calm of the natural beauty of the park.

4. Natchez Trace State Park

Natchez Trace State Park is one of the most unique and interesting places to see the Fall Foliage in all of the south. Located a short 2-hour hop from Memphis, this incredible natural area is incredible! The park is teeming with hiking trails that range from a one-half mile up to 4.5 miles as well as a more hard-core 40-mile overnight trail for those seeking not only beauty but solitude and adventure! Trails meander through the forest and fields along the lakeside shores and streams of Natchez Park.

5. Wolf River Greenway

If you are looking for a beautiful place to take in the fall colors a little closer to home, The Wolf River Greenway, a recent on going project sponsored by the City of Memphis, cuts directly through the City. The Wolf River extends from the north end of Mud Island, all the way down to Kennedy Park. Take a a few hours and your canoe, and indulge in a break from city life, paddling up river to take in the fall foliage as it decorates the banks of this river system. As of 2019, 10 miles of the 26-mile proposed trail system have been constructed.

The City of Memphis Division of Parks & Neighborhoods: A Primer

When it comes to parks, Memphis has a lot more going on than you may realize. The Division manages a wide array of facilities and spaces, including aquatic centers, golf ranges, the Memphis Zoo, and the Memphis Botanical Garden. Simply put, if it’s outdoors, the Division manages it.

History of the Parks Division

Since 1900, when the Parks Commission was first founded, green spaces have been an integral part of Memphis’ DNA. George Kessler, a famous architect of the era, had grand plans for parkway systems throughout the city, much like eastern metropolises like New York and Boston. One of his developments that stands to this day is his parkway system that connects Overton and Riverside Parks. Currently, this area is listed in the National Historic Register.

Since then, the city has expanded with parks and outdoor activities in mind. Concert venues, community centers, and other recreational facilities have become integral to both the city and the Division, making Memphis even more special.

Services & Other Features

When visiting one of the 167 parks in Memphis, you’ll be amazed at how well they are maintained. The Division takes pride in providing the best care and attention to each space, ensuring that everyone gets to benefit.

Hours of Operation

During the summer, all parks are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. (March 15th through October 31st). In the winter, the hours are shortened from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sports

If you or your kids are interested in athletics, the City of Memphis offers free league play for softball, baseball, kickball, soccer, and flag football. There are child and adult divisions — be sure to check out which parks host which leagues.

In addition to hosted sports, there are numerous tennis courts, golf ranges, and skate parks within the city.

Rentals

While all parks have a “first come, first serve” rule, citizens can rent specific areas for a small fee. Many of the parks are ideal for celebrations both big and small, from birthday parties to large corporate events.

Overton Park – 1914 Poplar Ave

This 342-acre area houses multiple attractions, including the Levitt Shell (outdoor amphitheater), Memphis Zoo, and the Memphis College of Art.

Shelby Farms Park – 6903 Great View Dr

Shelby Farms Park is one of the largest urban parks in the U.S. With 4,500 acres you can explore 40 miles of trails that are great for walking, biking, running and hiking.

Mississippi Greenbelt Park – 830 Island Dr

The Mississippi River is a landmark in its own right, but this park is the perfect blend of water and greenery. There is also a 1.5-mile trail ready to explore.

Memphis Botanic Garden – 750 Cherry Rd

While the zoo is fun, the Botanic Garden is a natural wonder. There are 31 different gardens within its borders, and each one is magnificent. From butterflies to cacti and succulents, you’ll experience the best that nature has to offer.

A history-making park

State parks are probably among humanity’s greatest cultural developments, and what better way to enjoy something than to ensure that it’s preserved for future generations that might want to relive the experience? T.O. Fuller, however, also adds to the novelty by giving visitors a chance to walk in the footsteps of history.

T.O. Fuller State Park was only the second U.S. state park that admitted African Americans, and its facilities were actually built to cater to African Americans. While building the park, workers discovered the Chucalissa site — a complex of mounds, villages and plazas that were home to Mississippian native peoples thousands of years ago.

The modern park took its name from Dr. Thomas O. Fuller, a pioneering leader who spent decades fighting for equality and representation at a time when disparity was the rule of law. Today, anyone can enjoy hiking, camping, sports or educational activities on the grounds, and since it’s the only state park within Memphis city limits, it’s one of the best local opportunities to get outdoors.

Fuller — you can explore hands-on archeology with your kids, learn more about the native plant and animal species that call the park home, or see one of the East Coast’s best-preserved prehistoric settlements.

Hit the trails

A network of well-maintained trails weaves through T.O. Fuller, so it’s the ideal place for a casual walk or intense run. Thanks to the heavily forested surroundings, it’s easy to put the urban hustle on pause for a moment as you reconnect with yourself, nature or your dog. Most of the trails here are easy to moderate, so take your time and enjoy the shade.

Whether you prefer roughing it or relaxing in a recreational vehicle, T.O. Fuller State Park accommodates. For those who prefer creature comforts, about $35 will get you laundry and bathhouse access, power, a grill site and other modern conveniences.

Campus^, an Urban Oasis

Hidden behind a large black gate and a grove of trees, Campus^ is invisible to all but those looking for it, meaning it’s just cut off enough from downtown Memphis to offer a reprieve from the hustle and bustle.

Nestled in Overton Park, the zoo originated with the effort to protect a single black bear named Natch. The search for suitable accommodations for Natch unearthed several more exotic animals that also needed housing, and the idea to construct a zoological garden for them and others was born in 1904. The zoo finally opened in 1906 to a delighted public, and additional exotic cats and elephants were acquired shortly thereafter.

Over the last century, the zoo has expanded to 19 exhibits, including seasonal exhibits that showcase animals sensitive to the changing Memphis climate. In addition to lions and tigers and bears (oh my!), you can monkey around in Primate Canyon, get hip to the hippos at Zambezi River Hippo Camp and fish for compliments at the Aquarium.

In acknowledgment of the fact that zoos began as a way to educate the public about animals they might not see regularly, the Memphis Zoo takes its commitment to public education seriously, and each main exhibit features daily chats with keepers. During these chats, staff answer questions about the animals’ natural habitat, their care at the zoo, how the zoo acquired its current population and more. If you or a companion have a special interest in a particular species, don’t miss this chance to talk with the experts. For a bit of the old razzle dazzle, the zoo also offers sea lion shows during which the animals perform tricks that will delight the young and young at heart.

Speaking of children, have you heard about Zoo Snoozes? These programs are the best excuse for zoo enthusiasts to stay up past bedtime, offering moonlight safaris and the chance to get a closer view of the nocturnal animals. Outdoor Activities in Memphis

Beale Street

Although many of the stops along Beale Street are indoors, you’ll likely encounter outdoor live music if you take a nighttime stroll along the famed street. Walk far enough and you’ll come upon Handy Park at Beale and 3rd, which boasts two outdoor music venues that are always free and open to the public.

Overton Park

Overton Park is another place that residents of Memphis love to frequent, located in the heart of Memphis and encompassing 342 acres. No matter what you love to do outdoors, Overton Park offers something for everyone, including a nine-hole golf course, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Rainbow Lake, the Memphis Zoo and a bunch of playgrounds for your little ones. Oh, and the 12-acre Old Forest State Nature Area is thrown in for good measure.

Shelby Farms Park

If you’re looking for great outdoor family fun that is also centrally located, Shelby Farms is one to check out. Explore more than 40 miles of paved and unpaved trails, take fun to new heights and climb through the trees on a treetop adventure course, or saddle up and hit the trails on horseback. Mississippi River + Tom Lee Park

A trip to Memphis simply isn’t worth it if you don’t spend some time on the banks of one of the most famous rivers in the world. Ol’ Man River serves as the perfect backdrop for an impromptu picnic, an afternoon stroll or some sightseeing—and the myriad parks along the shore give you ample opportunity to enjoy the Big Muddy.

Mud Island River Park is one of the most popular spots, boasting an exact scale replica of the Lower Mississippi River to explore. Needless to say, there’s a lot to see and do while you learn about the mighty river and what it means to Memphis.

Tom Lee Park was named after a brave resident who saved 32 people when a steamer capsized in the Mississippi in 1925. The park runs along the great river and offers magnificent views of the city’s skyline and the river. The park hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year, including the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Festival and the Beale Street Music Festival. When there are no major festivals, parking is available. However, the park is just a short walk from downtown attractions. Broad pathways provide ample space for walkers and joggers, while the broad stretch of green space is ideal for simply relaxing in the sun, a family game of Frisbee, or other outdoor activities.

Memphis Botanic Gardens

Much of our city’s history is wrapped up in the land upon which the Memphis Botanic Gardens now sit. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to explore the entirety of Audubon Park’s 96 acres in a single visit, guests can stroll through any of the 31 gardens and have a different experience every time.

To plan your route ahead of time, learn what’s blooming in each garden by checking the Memphis Botanic Gardens website. Roses, cacti, herb gardens, conifer stands and irises are just a few of the big draws.

The national pastime

If you love summer and sports, this one’s for you: During baseball season, the Memphis Redbirds are frequently in action at AutoZone Park in downtown Memphis. The family-friendly atmosphere and numerous food options make taking in a game a great way to spend the day with loved ones—and because the Redbirds are the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, you’ll catch a sneak peek of up-and-coming Major Leaguers as they hone their craft.

Dixon Gallery and Gardens

Since 1976, this museum has been home to a splendid Impressionist assortment including works by Pissarro, Monet and Degas. In their will, the late Hugo and Margaret Dixon gave the house and its grounds to the people of Memphis in order to set up this museum. The initial Dixon collection included works by American and French Impressionists. The museum’s traveling exhibits are usually elegant collections based on a certain time period or theme, and although it is small, it is abundant with offerings. The gallery also organizes special concerts and picnics from spring through fall, and most of these are free of charge.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo has often been rated as one of the best zoos in the country both for its abundance of exhibits in a simple layout and for the mere fact that you can get very close to the animals. With a Teton ecosystem with lots of wolves and grizzly bears, a Northwest Passage habitat full of river otters and polar bears, and giant pandas from China, this top-notch zoo will charm adults as well as kids. During winter, festive lights and a skating tent draw the holiday spirit to the zoo. The park is also open for select evening visits.

No matter the time of year, you can always count on great outdoor activities in Memphis.

Although the river is a fixture of everyday life in Memphis, that does nothing to diminish its power. Why not head to Big River Crossing and experience the allure of the mighty Mississippi for yourself?

Crossing the Big River

At nearly a mile in length, Big River Crossing is the longest public pedestrian bridge across the Mississippi, as well as America’s longest active rail, bicycle and pedestrian crossing. The bridge connects Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee, with Main Street in West Memphis, Arkansas, tying together a 10-mile corridor of both cities’ walking and biking routes. Like the river itself, Big River Crossing is at the heart of Memphis’ great urban playground.

Big River Crossing opened in 2016, and untold thousands have enjoyed this free attraction since then. It offers sweeping views of the Mississippi River and the Memphis skyline up past South Bluffs and Beale Street Landing, with ships passing underneath throughout the day and trains regularly rolling along the adjoining railway bridge.

Memphis on the Mississippi

Step off the Tennessee side of Big River Crossing and you’re practically in the middle of downtown Memphis. The Memphis Riverfront is mere footsteps away, with urban walking trails and sweeping bluff-top views from Martyrs Park. What’s more, bike lanes on Front Street make it easy for cyclists to get just about anywhere in the downtown area, including countless local shops and eateries.

Grab a snack and a hot cup of joe at Bluff City Coffee & Bakery, try a local craft beer or two at Ghost River Brewery, browse the Memphis Farmers Market or head to Central BBQ to find out for yourself why Memphis is so famous for its ribs. These establishments and many more are within about a mile of Big River Crossing, and you don’t have to go much farther to hit the Beale Street Historic District—home of the blues and endless possibilities.

As for the other side of the river, there’s some cool stuff in West Memphis, too. Be sure to make time for Big River Trail, which connects to Big River Crossing and offers a chance to explore the beautiful riverside landscape. The trail follows the levee alongside the Mississippi River, and its construction is an ongoing project. Once completed, it will stretch along more than 1,600 river miles.

Big River Crossing is open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., and it is available to cyclists and pedestrians free of charge. Check out the bridge around sunrise, sunset, holidays and other special events to see it sparkle with more than 100,000 Philips LED lights, creating a truly brilliant display.
