Although Kelvin Kolheim, the founder of Beale Street Brewing Co., takes an undeniable sense of pride from owning the city’s first (and only) Black-owned brewery, he’s clear that he wants his business to reflect the city of Memphis as a whole. “When we first launched, a friend told me ‘man, you’re going to be able to help every brewery in town by introducing a whole different demographic to craft beer,’ to which I said, ‘well that’s great, a rising tide lifts all boats,” he says. He points out that one of Beale Street Brewing’s taglines is BEERrrbody, a phrase that illustrates the business’s commitment to celebrating community through the love of craft beer. “From the beginning, I knew that I wanted to make a beer that was for all Memphians,” he says.

Even before he became a brewery owner, Kolheim had a long history of celebrating Memphis and investing in the city’s economic growth, notably serving as the Director of Economic Development with the Greater Memphis Chamber for eleven years. That all changed when he was given a home brewing kit from a friend, which he says immediately reminded him of another one of his personal passions, cooking. “Coming from a culinary perspective, I realized that I could manipulate flavors and come up with new combinations with the beer, just like I’d always done with food. I just got bit by the brewing bug,” he says with a chuckle.

Photo Credit: Beale Street Brewing Co

Kolheim decided to turn his hobby into a business after participating in the Pink Palace’s Science of Beer competition. “At that time, which was about six years ago, Memphis was definitely underserved when it came to craft breweries, so I saw an opportunity,” he says. The venture eventually became a true family affair, with Kolheim employing several friends and family members to help bring his dream into fruition. “We’ve got a strong, tight-knit team, which is important for any business,” he tells me.

While creating delicious and innovative beer will always be at the heart of any successful brewery, Beale Street Brewing Co. has also earned a reputation for their beer’s names and artwork, many of which pay homage to the city’s musical heritage. “I’m a huge Memphis music fan and knew that I wanted to celebrate that legacy, so that element has been there since the beginning,” he says. While Isaac Hayes, Al Green, and Three 6 Mafia are all referenced in Beale Street Brewing’s beers, a special relationship has formed with hip-hop legends 8Ball & MJG, who collaborated with the brewery on the beer “Space Age Sippin’,” a play on the group’s song “Space Age Pimpin’.” “Basically, I just told them my story and pitched the idea to them, and they loved it…I’m just so glad that the beer lived up to the legends themselves and that they’ve been so involved.”

In addition to forming relationships with local musical icons, Kolheim and Beale Street Brewing have also forged bonds with Memphis other craft breweries. “The Memphis brew scene is really great and supportive as a whole and I’m really glad to be a part of it,” he says. He points to his efforts last summer of bringing the Memphis brew scene together to produce a beer called “Black is Beautiful” as a particularly memorable moment of unity. The project, which was started by Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, aimed to bring attention to the injustices faced by people of color by donating the proceeds of the beer to organizations that help support police brutality reform. “We had an overwhelming response from the other breweries in town, and it marked the first time all of the city’s breweries had collaborated on one project together,” he says.

Unlike Memphis other craft breweries, Beale Street Brewing does not currently have a taproom, although Kolheim says that finding a permanent home is now top priority“We’ve been looking for a space for a few years now, but of course Covid put that a bit on the backburner. However, we’re currently looking for a taproom Downtown, so keep your eyes peeled,” he says.

Until then, Memphians can find Beale Street Brewing’s current selection of beers basically anywhere that craft beers are sold, as well as on tap at various restaurants and bars around town. The brewery is also currently working on several new beers, which should be released next month. “We’re working on two new beers to celebrate our one-year anniversary, which should be out in March, and we’re also working on a beer for the virtual Memphis Beer Fest, which is a collaboration with Bosco’s called ‘It’s 901 Somewhere’,” says Kolheim. “One this is for certain: folks can expect a lot more of the same love and energy in our new releases.”

What is the Cooper-Young Beerfest?

The Cooper-Young Beerfest is a fundraising event for the Cooper-Young Community Association (CYCA), meaning the money it brings in goes straight to the community. And what better way to support one of the most eclectic neighborhoods in Memphis than by drinking some beer?

Where is the Beerfest?

As in previous years, the 2018 Cooper-Young Beerfest will be held at Midtown Autowerks, located at 795 S. Cooper St. near the intersection of Cooper St. and Central Ave.

When is the Beerfest being held?

If you know anything about beer, you know that Oktoberfest is a big deal. With that in mind, it only makes sense that this year’s Cooper-Young Beerfest is set to be held on Oct. 20.

How much is admission?

During the month of September, tickets to the Cooper-Young Beerfest are available for $45. If you’re holding off on buying, don’t wait too long, as the price will go up to $50 after Oct. 1!

What can you do at the Beerfest?

As its name suggests, the Cooper-Young Beerfest’s main attraction is… you guessed it, beer. Be sure to sample the numerous craft beers on offer, and if you want a break from beer, check out the single cider location.

Heading into its ninth year, the Cooper-Young Beerfest is a top fall attraction in Memphis that’s not to be missed!

With craft beer growing in popularity across the nation, there’s no wonder Crosstown Brewing Company is making a name for itself here in Memphis. Situated on Concourse Ave., Crosstown Brewing seeks to create a diverse range of offerings that appeal to everyone from first-time beer-drinkers to seasoned quaffers.

Whether you prefer malts or ales, Crosstown Brewing has something flavored with fruits and spices and brewed for a deliciously smooth drinking experience. Here are some of our favorites:

Traffic IPA

Flavored with mango, pineapple, passion and grapefruit, this beer is brewed in the West Coast American tradition to bring out a crisp finish that’s dry on your palate.

Crosstown Brown

Crafted in the vein of traditional English beers, Crosstown Brown has a nutty taste that belies its brown malt base. The addition of toffee, graham crackers, caramel and toasted bread results in a rich taste and a flavor that pops.

Boll Weevil Brown Ale

The Boll Weevil’s Pilsner Malt and Belgian Saison yeast infuse to yield a rich, dry crispness that’s pleasantly flavored with Saison pear and pepper.

Alt School

This beer strikes a perfect balance between bitterness and malt—and has toffee, caramel and crusty bread flavors to boot. Once you go Alt School, you won’t go back!

Siren Blonde Ale

This blonde ale has just the right amount of bitterness to go with its spice. Its mild citrus flavor with floral hints is well balanced and suitable for any occasion.

Russian Imperial Stout

The deep, dark color of this stout is your first clue that you’re about to enjoy the dark goodness of chocolate, roasted coffee and fruit. Go ahead, rush in for a Russian.

Stick Shift Pale Ale

This German-inspired beer is a delightful blend of strong and bitter with a smooth finish. One ingredient in particular—Skagit Valley red wheat—gives it a nice kick.

Drop by Crosstown Brewing’s spacious taproom to enjoy local brews conceived or selected by Memphis creatives who go the extra mile for magnificently flavored and spiced beer.

Although Memphis breweries and the craft beer phenomenon are relatively new to Memphis, the Bluff City has had a long love affair with alcohol. In fact, in 1915, both the mayor and a local judge were removed from their duties for failing to uphold contemporary prohibition laws!

Fast-forward to the present time, when Memphis is experiencing a local brewery renaissance of sorts. With all the breweries in Memphis, every Memphian has their favorite. But there’s one thing we all agree on: Keeping it local is the hottest trend of all. With that in mind, here are seven of the best breweries in Memphis you need to check out:

Ghost River Brewing Company & Tap Room

All Memphis breweries will tell you it all starts with the water, so it’s no surprise that our first craft brewery relies on that clean drinking water for which Memphis is so renowned. Before the water reaches Ghost River Brewing, it trickles down the Wolf River, along the Ghost River and through the Memphis Sands Aquifer, which leaves it soft, mineral-free and perfect for brewing.

High Cotton Brewing Company

The High Cotton Brewing Company is both laid-back and cutting-edge, so it makes perfect sense that High Cotton’s four founders set up shop in the Edge District. If you’re a fan of Belgians and dark beers, visit HCBC’s taproom just down the street from historic Sun Studios to find 10 select brews always on tap.

Boscos Squared Brewing Company

This anchor of Overton Square eschews the typical craft beer taproom feel for an upscale atmosphere. While Boscos’proximity to the Theater District makes it the perfect choice for a pre-show beer, its award-winning Flaming Stone brew alone is worth the trip. What’s more, the on-site restaurant is a hot spot for Sunday brunch.

Memphis Made Brewing Company

Although Memphis Made Brewing specializes in seasonal brews, you’ll find its Lucid Kolsch on tap year-round. More good news: Lucid Kolsch pairs well with fare from just about any of the food trucks that park outside Memphis Made’s warehouse location in the Cooper-Young neighborhood.

Wiseacre Brewery

Wiseacre is known for two things: its corrugated metal building and its commitment to quality brewing. Before launching Wiseacre, the Bartosch brothers traveled the nation, gleaning brewing secrets from all over. Tiny Bomb, one of their year-round offerings, is a local legend. With two locations, one on Broad Avenue and one in Downtown Memphis, adding this brewery to your itinerary or weekend plans is super easy.

Meddlesome Brewery

Can you believe it? The craft beer scene in Memphis is old enough now to have started spawning second-generation locations. Brewers from Boscos and nearby Jackson-based Rock N Dough Pizza came together to form Meddlesome Brewing, a relative newcomer that’s already making waves.

Crosstown Brewing Company

Crosstown Brewing Company is the other new kid on the block. Having taken up residence in the old abandoned Sears distribution center on the Crosstown Concourse, Crosstown Brewing bills itself as “Scrappy, quirky and driven by a passion to build something amazing.”

The craft beer scene in Memphis is definitely continuing the traditions put in place by those who came before! To keep your finger on the pulse of the burgeoning Memphis brewing scene, check out the Memphis Craft Beer website, and head here for more things Memphis.

True to its motto of “Never Settle. Always Meddle.,” the Meddlesome Brewing Company of Memphis has taken home the title of best hometown brew. Meddlesome’s 201 Hoplar was dubbed King of Memphis beers in the “Memphis Flyer” second annual Beer Bracket Challenge.

Shocking the world

The honor was something of a surprise for Richie EsQuivel and Ben Pugh, owners of Meddlesome Brewing Company. Meddlesome has only been on the Memphis brewery scene for a little over a year, though its owners are no strangers to the Bluff City’s beer revolution. EsQuivel came up with Boscos Brewing Company—Memphis’s first brewpub—while Pugh cut his teeth as a brewer at Rock ‘n Dough Pizza and Brew Company out of Jackson.

“It’s taken us aback, honestly,” said Pugh. “Once we saw we’d made it to the finals, we were pumped we’d even made it that far.”

Meddlesome Brewing

Meddlesome’s Memphis roots

Meddlesome Brewing calls the Memphis suburb of Cordova home, which is not far from the Shelby Farms dog park. Even though the company has only been around a short time, the 201 Hoplar IPA obviously hit the right note with fans, driving it to the top of the fan-voted honor.

EsQuivel and Pugh cite their hometown as a large influence on what they do, noting that they love to create beers they feel embody Memphis: strong, tenacious and unforgettable.

With the opening of Meddlesome Brewing and the other new kid on the block, Crosstown, there is now a grand total of seven independent brewers on the Memphis craft beer scene. It’s a movement that has been steadily gaining momentum since 2013.

At its heart, Meddlesome Brewing lives by a very simple philosophy when creating its beers: “Never fear meddling with convention in search of something greater,” its website declares. And the knowledgeable beer-drinkers of the Bluff City have spoken in enthusiastic agreement.

Taking home the crown

This year’s King of Beers takes inspiration from the great IPAs of the West Coast. It’s not over-the-top bitter upon the first sip, and its slightly fruity flavor comes in to finish an enjoyable experience. It’s brewed with Chinook and Columbus hops for a combination that delivers a brew bursting with resin, pine, ripe pineapple and grapefruit flavors.

The Flyer’s bracket challenge was a highly scientific poll, breaking beers into four categories in the early rounds. Light beers, dark beers, IPAs and seasonals all competed against their brethren until the final four, at which point 201 Hoplar took down Wiseacre Brewing’s Tiny Bomb before besting another Wiseacre offering, Astronaut Status.

No matter the outcome of the annual competition, there’s a definite sense of family developing in the burgeoning Memphis craft beer scene—one that’s sure to produce a number of deserving champions in King of Beer Brackets to come.
