There’s so much to love about Memphis, from the history to the music and even the Bass Pro Pyramid in all its strange glory. But one thing that makes this city truly great is the wide array of food options. And there’s no shortage of truly unique places to eat in Memphis. Whether it’s their menu or their entire aesthetic, we want to share some of the best one-of-a-kind spots around town that you’re gonna love!

The Hen House

Looking for a cozy wine bar perfect for a girls’ night or brunch? The Hen House was made with those vibes in mind, with eats perfect for sharing with the table and one-of-a-kind drinks you’ll love.

The Beauty Shop Restaurant

No list of unique Memphis restaurants would be complete without mentioning The Beauty Shop, a former curl-and-dye spot that Priscilla Presley herself used to frequent. Now, it’s a ’50s-style eatery that still has hair dryers at select tables, serving up delicious foods from brunch to dinner.

Global Café

Global Café is an international food hall with a menu as eclectic and unique as its chefs who cook recipes from their home countries. Try authentic dishes from all over the world right here in Memphis at an affordable price.

Tiger and Peacock

Come for the rooftop views, but stay for the delicious food at Tiger and Peacock on Overton Square. This spot has dramatic and “wild” decor that’s definitely Instagram-worthy, and their drink and snack menus will keep the party going until closing time.

The Farmer

For a taste of the South with an upscale spin, try The Farmer at Railgarten. This restaurant’s eco-friendly focus and sleek decor elevate any dining experience. You’ve really got to try their deviled eggs for yourself!

Memphis Whistle

Between the unique cocktails and moody aesthetic, Memphis Whistle is one place that needs to be experienced. They even offer vegan bites on their menu and a rotation of seasonal desserts. This may soon become your favorite spot.

Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza

Tamboli’s is a downtown eatery with authentic Italian fare, and the restaurant itself offers beautiful views of Madison with its large windows. Between their brilliant twists on classic foods and unique decor, this is one spot you’ll want to visit.

Bishop – Central Station Hotel

You don’t need to stay at the Central Station Hotel to enjoy Bishop, although you likely won’t want to leave once you step inside. This upscale French-inspired eatery serves breakfast through dinner and drinks to go with every meal, with modern French vibes in its decor to match the menu.

Although Memphis has undoubtedly earned its title as “The Home of the Blues,” the fact remains that the city’s defining genre isn’t quite as prevalent as it once was. That said, there are still plenty of great options around town to catch some live blues music that will appeal to both locals and tourists alike. Below is our one-stop guide for the clubs, venues, and bars that are helping to ensure the Bluff City remains at the epicenter for authentic Delta blues.

Wild Bill’s Juke Joint (1580 Vollintine Ave)

The sad reality is that genuine juke joints have been rapidly disappearing throughout the South over the past several decades, and Memphis is no exception. Thankfully this cozy North Memphis club is still carrying the torch and providing some of the best blues in the region into the wee hours of the morning. For the past 25+ years, Wild Bill’s has reigned as one of the city’s best neighborhood music clubs and its stature continues to grow. While the club is celebrated for its great music, friendly atmosphere, and throwback style, its smoke-filled rooms and raunchy dancing aren’t necessarily for the faint hearted. Whether you catch the house band, the Juke Joint All Stars, or a special guest performer, Wild Bill’s is the spot for real blues.

CC Blues Club (1427 Thomas St)

Known as much for their chicken as their live music and old school atmosphere, CC Blues Club is such a hidden gem that I’m guessing most native Memphians aren’t even aware of its existence. While this certainly adds to its mystique, it also means that it’s a bit more difficult to know what exactly is happening on any given night (Like a real blues club, CC’s doesn’t have a website). That said, if you’re looking to explore the more uncharted areas of Memphis and take a risk, CC’s may be the place for you.

Hernando’s Hideaway (3210 Old Hernando Rd)

Hernando’s Hideaway (3210 Old Hernando Rd) street view

While not a blues club per se, Whitehaven’s legendary Hernando’s Hideaway frequently features blues musicians and other related roots genres such as country and R&B. The club, which was once frequented by Memphis royalty like Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and BB King, retains its old-school cool and can often feel like a portal into a bygone era. In the recent past, Hernando’s has hosted some of the world’s premiere blues players and also frequently serves as the home to various Memphis Blues Society events. To see what’s coming up soon, be sure to check out their calendar.

Earnestine & Hazel’s (531 S Main St.)

Earnestine & Hazel’s (531 S Main St.) front

America’s most haunted bar is also a great place to catch some live blues on the weekends (if you aren’t too scared, that is). This Memphis institution has been hosting live music since at least the 1950s and remains a local favorite for late night dancing, drinking, and revelry. If you happen to stumble upon E&H on a weeknight when there isn’t a band playing, don’t fret. They have one of the city’s best jukeboxes filled with local blues heroes like B.B. King, Bobby “Blue” Bland, John Lee Hooker, and many more.

The Crosstown Concourse (1350 Concourse Ave.)

The Crosstown Concourse (1350 Concourse Ave.) interior

The Crosstown Concourse, a converted Sears warehouse that is now a dynamic “vertical village,” offers a ton of great options for music lovers of all stripes, including blues aficionados. For live music, be sure to check out the calendars for the Green Room at Crosstown Arts and the Crosstown Theater, both of which regularly feature blues and Americana artists. You should also check out the massive collection of rare records at the Memphis Listening Lab, a unique musical library that includes hundreds of hard-to-find blues LPs, 78s, and 45s. The Lab also features live performances and listening parties from time to time.

Beale Street

Beale Street view

Okay, perhaps we buried the lede here, but you kinda knew this one already, right? For over a century, Beale Street has served as the most important site for blues music in America (and probably the world). The genre remains the lifeblood of the famed street and there are countless clubs dedicated to bringing you the music that made it famous. While you can’t go wrong with the famous clubs like B.B. King’s and Rum Boogie, we find that some of the best acts are nestled in smaller clubs like Mr. Handy’s Blues Hall, the Beale Street Tap Room, or right in the middle of historical Handy Park.

You’ve heard us and probably everyone else in town talk about how excited Memphians are for patio season. I mean, with great weather and so many local bartenders showing off their skills, there are plenty of reasons to be hyped! But it’s not just about the patios–it’s what’s on the inside that counts. Even though our friends at Central Station have the perfect patio for some South Main fun, their lobby bar, Eight & Sand, is where you need to be.

We caught up with Will Davenport, Eight & Sand’s general manager, and learned a little about him and how the cocktail program at the bar combines with the most chill atmosphere to make one unforgettable experience!

We Are Memphis: What do you love about working at Eight & Sand?

Will Davenport: I was born and raised in Memphis and I have so much love for this city and the people and stuff that comes out of here. I also have a really soft spot in my heart for Memphis music so here I get to blend my love of cocktails–we do a very Memphis forward program here where we try to highlight Memphis products and producers and locally owned companies through our menus and products that we bring in. So I’m happy to work on that side and also as far as the atmosphere we’ve got a killer music program.

WAM: What makes Eight & Sand different from any other bar in town?

Will: Most of my career, I was working in fine dining restaurants which I had a lot of fun with and it was where I was able to grow a lot of my knowledge and ability to build beverage programs. Eight & Sand has been a whole changeover. We’re a bar so I’m able to focus in on that. It provides a really fun atmosphere with great drinks behind it and making it very accessible–I want everyone to come in here and have a good time.

WAM: What are your top two favorite drinks to make?

Will: I love making a drink called Boulevardier it’s a negroni riff–I usually use rye whiskey in mine because I love the bite and the extra heat you get from that and then Campari which is a bitter orange liqueur and then just a good sweet vermouth usually those are done in equal parts but I usually bump the rye up on mine and drop the sweet vermouth down so you get this nice a little bit bitter but real boozy kind of whiskey style cocktail. I think it’s a nice little sipper. Another favorite is just a classic margarita. It’s actually my parents’ favorite cocktail, so I’ve got a lot of practice in!

WAM: What’s your favorite dish from the bar menu?

Will: That’s a tough one–I think I’m going to have to go with our wings. They’re just super tasty and they’ve got this sweet and spicy Asian style sauce and this blue cheese ranch on the side. I absolutely hate blue cheese, I can’t eat it with anything but with those wings it’s really really good.

WAM: What should someone order for the first time at Eight & Sand or their first time at the bar in general?

Will: Honestly what I encourage a lot of people to do is to just come up. We have a lot of talented, well-trained bartenders and just kind of come in. If you can’t find anything immediately off the menu, just ask them to whip you up something! We all do that, it’s one of our favorite things. It’s just a time to get creative and make something custom and unique for each individual person. But if that’s not your speed and you want something off the menu, I recommend an Andrew Michael Old Fashioned. It’s just a tried and true classic and it’s hard to beat.

WAM: If you could make a classic “Memphis” themed cocktail, what would you make? What about something more modern?

Will: For a classic one, just kind of taking our Old Fashioned on the menu is a great idea. I use Old Dominick’s Huling Station for the base in it and then we make bitters in-house to go along with it. It’s a very local thing. For a modern style–getting into spring and summer things I like to do that I don’t see very often are shandy style cocktails–so incorporating beer in some way. So I’d like to make some light patio sipper that has a cool local beer on top of it.

WAM: What is your advice to someone who is a beginner looking to get into mixology?

Will: I would say just have fun with it. The way I got into it was through cooking. I love to cook a lot so I took that passion and threw it into bartending. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you kind of just learn more every single day. Then, you get to a point where you’re just creating stuff. And sometimes it’s not going to be good–you’re going to make some bad stuff every now and then but don’t get discouraged by it. At the end of the day, you can just shoot it back and start over!

If you haven’t been to Eight & Sand yet, now’s the time! Check them out online here or follow them on Instagram @eightandsandmem

Cheers!

Happy Hour in Memphis: How to Party in Memphis (and not go broke) https://wearememphis.com/play/food-drink/how-to-party-in-memphis-and-not-go-broke/ Thu, 05 Dec 2019 23:11:59 +0000 http://wearememphis.com/?p=4686 It’s time to party but the way your finances are set up… you need a deal. WeareMemphis.com has put together some tips to help you get your party on while on a budget.

The post Happy Hour in Memphis: How to Party in Memphis (and not go broke) appeared first on We Are Memphis.

You want to party in Memphis but you’ve got responsibilities. You’ve got champagne taste and beer money. I feel you. I have some tips that can help you party hearty without spending your whole paycheck.

Tip 1: Start with Happy Hour in Memphis

Check out your favorite bars and restaurants for Happy Hour Memphis deals during the week. If you have champagne taste, you can get a deal at Old Dominick’s infamous Pure Memphis Cocktail Hours Thursday – 2-7pm, Friday – 2-8pm, Saturday – 2-8pm, Sunday – 12pm-5pm.  For a more budget-friendly option, check out the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium’s self-proclaimed “Best Happy Hour in Memphis.” Happy Hour is from 4-7 pm Tuesday through Friday and features $4 draft beers. Blind Bear Speakeasy has great Happy Hour deals like $2.50 domestic beers and two for $5 taco deals. If you prefer weekend partying, check out Day Parties where you can get food and drink deals with the cost of admission.

Happy Hour

Tip 2: Groupon It

Groupon has great deals for drinks and entertainment. One great deal that we found was an appetizers and beer deal starting at $11.55 at The Casual Pint.

Tip 3: Double Up

Check out places where you get drinks and entertainment. A local bowling alley is a great start and has good drinks and bar food at reasonable prices. Places like Dave and Busters and Golf & Games Family Park stay open late and can also offer a good time at a reasonable price.

Tip 4: Take it to School

College bars are notorious for drink specials, especially on a game day. Note: Just don’t be creepy. Find campus bars near the University of Memphis and the other 43 colleges within 100 miles of Memphis.

Tip 5: Dance

Get your party on at a dance club. Pay a small door fee and party-till-you-drop. Paula & Raiford’s Disco is a Memphis icon that is open until 4 a.m. For a night of sexy salsa dancing, head over to the legendary Rumba Room. If you’ve got a little country in your soul, head over to Beale Street to Jerry Lee Lewis Café & Honky Tonk

Tip 6: Stay Social

Join a social club or group. Check out Meetup for a list of events in your area. Groups like Memphis 20s and 30s Social have more than 2,000 members and is free to join. They hold events throughout the city. You can find a group for any interest. Check out local chapters for events. They might even have bar specials or you may be able to drink for free with memberships.

Party at a Bar

Tip 7: Cruise Beale Street

In Memphis, Beale Street is the obvious choice for late-night entertainment but partying there can leave a dent in your wallet. There are still deals to be had. People’s on Beale Street is a pool hall and sports bar. To get a huge bang for your buck, check out Silky O’Sullivan’s. They serve a drink in a bucket!!!

No matter what your budget, there is a place for you to party in Memphis!

3 jazzy Memphis speakeasy locations hidden away in the city https://wearememphis.com/play/speakeasy-memphis/ https://wearememphis.com/play/speakeasy-memphis/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 13:00:32 +0000 https://wearememphis.com/?p=2361 The roaring '20s have had a lasting impact on American culture, with many individuals finding themselves attracted to the thrill and mystery of Prohibition-era speakeasies. Memphis residents and visitors who want a taste of the Prohibition era's underground bar scene should check out these three Memphis speakeasies today!

The post 3 jazzy Memphis speakeasy locations hidden away in the city appeared first on We Are Memphis.

The 1920s was a decade of jazz, fringed dresses and merriment. However, the happy-go-lucky culture of the times was often overshadowed by Prohibition, a law passed by the United States government that forbade the sale of alcohol. Though the drink was banned, many citizens rebelled, creating underground bars hidden behind unassuming storefronts and protected with exclusive password entry. Although these bars known as speakeasies became obsolete when the ban on alcohol sales was lifted, their mystery and allure remained, creating a niche aesthetic that still draws in visitors today.

To experience a classic vibe from the 1920s, check out these three Memphis speakeasies that will be sure to make you fall in love with the culture of Memphis.

Blind Bear Speakeasy

Blind Bear Speakeasy is a Memphis cocktail bar designed to evoke the feel of a Prohibition-era speakeasy. Featuring pool and card tables and serving drinks in mason jars as a nod to the moonshiners of the ’20s, Blind Bear plays up the contemporary charm by providing the interior aesthetic of a cozy, old-style lounge for visitors. Though Blind Bear is designed to be more of a lounge than a restaurant, patrons who want to grab something to eat can partake in traditional Southern fare right in the heart of Memphis. The ever changing password to enter Blind Bear can be found on their Facebook page.

The Pocket Speakeasy

The Pocket is a Memphis speakeasy that combines a modernist aesthetic with the thrill of Prohibition-era secrecy and mystery. Though the interior is brightly lit and sleek, with high-contrast design and a spacious layout, it manages to evoke the feel of a traditional speakeasy with a false storefront and password access. The Pocket’s storefront is that of an upscale clothing shop called Tailor’s Union that masks its true business until visitors are inside. Once in,visitors are led around to the back by a host, where they have their pick of upstairs and downstairs bar space as well as a sofa lounge. Though The Pocket is a members-only club, it recently offered a public access period Aug. 24 through Sept. 13, and it may offer open-bar events in the future.

Dodici at Bari Ristorante

A classic speakeasy in every sense of the word, Dodici was designed to bring visitors back to the Jazz Age with everything from its management to its 1920s aesthetic. Hidden away above the Bari Ristorante on Cooper St., visitors are ushered through a secret door in the Bari’s enoteca, at which point they’re brought up a dimly lit stairwell to the small bar above the restaurant. Dodici was named for the number of people it can seat—a humble 12 at a time—which underscores its cozy and intimate nature.

Dodici is open later than the restaurant located below it, so call ahead if you plan on arriving late to ensure you know how to get in.

Let’s talk cocktail bars Memphis. Tough day at the office? Long afternoon of sightseeing in Memphis? Either way, sounds like it’s time to grab a cocktail. Ready to go beyond the typical bars in Memphis? Now’s the time.

Lucky for you, there are a lot of cocktail bars Memphis!  There are so many spots where you can sit down to an expertly prepared boozy beverage. Whether you’re looking for a local watering hole or an upscale establishment, here’s a list of some of the best cocktail spots with some of the best cocktails in Memphis!

Hen House

While the Hen House primarily serves top-tier wines, cocktail lovers shouldn’t be shy about stopping in. This new East Memphis space will have a cocktail program featuring house-made syrups and even lessons and educational classes led by mixologist Tony Nguyen. Paired with family-style shareable dishes that have elevated Southern flavors, this space is a can’t miss.

Bar DKDC

Memphians are more than familiar with Karen Carrier’s Beauty Shop Restaurant, but stopping by Bar DKDC is a must. From the eccentric decor that makes you feel like you’re in one of the coolest spots in town to drinks featuring flavors from far off lands (as well as classics we all know and love), Bar DKDC is a perfect addition to your happy-hour lineup. Crosstown Art Bar

Are you looking for a space with good drinks and even better vibes? Art Bar is for you. Tucked away in the Crosstown Arts Gallery at Crosstown Concourse, the drinks are the only great things about this cocktail bar in Memphis. As expected of some of the artsiest Memphians in town, the aesthetics of the space are perfect for unwinding with something to sip.

Bar Hustle

Set in the Arrive Hotel, Bar Hustle not only has some amazing drinks and menu items, but also has some serious South Main spirit. Whether you’re cozying up with a cocktail in their comfy seating or using their decor as the backdrop for photos of your drink to post on Instagram (they’re going to look amazing, by the way), you’ll find something to love about this bar.

Eight and Sand

Visiting Central Station Hotel? Out of towners may be looking for a place to rest their heads, but Memphians know that Eight and Sand is one of the best bars in the city. We know that anything Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman is going to be good, but this bar goes above and beyond. The phrase “Eight and Sand” is sort of like “break and leg” for the train industry and going to this bar is definitely good luck. The curated playlists are more than enough to put you in a Memphis mood but don’t forget to come on a night where a live DJ is spinning both the classics and a little bit of something new. Full steam ahead indeed.

What makes Old Dominick Distillery so special?

The discovery of an old bottle of Old Dominick Toddy inspired Chris and Alex to open Old Dominick Distillery in 2016. The building, which is reminiscent of times long past, has vintage furnishings that will take you back to the old days before Prohibition, when whiskey flowed like water and no one was a stranger. The first bottle of Old Dominick whiskey produced in the new distillery was the first that was legally produced in the state since the end of Prohibition. The rich taste of the whiskey and the rich history of the Canale family blend together to make to make Old Dominick one of the most unique distilleries in Tennessee.

Take a tour

Old Dominick Distillery offers tours of the distillery on a regular basis. Each tour gives you an inside look as to how the spirits are produced and the lengths to which the company goes to ensure that each batch of their booze is of the highest possible quality. On days that the distillery hosts a private event, the last tour normally starts at 2 p.m.

Dinner? Drinks? Late-night adventures with friends?

If you want to go out on the town and spend time in one of the most unique bars in all of Memphis, Old Dominick is the place for you. You can host a private event or go on a night when it’s open to the public. Have fun! Cut loose and enjoy a little bit of history with a couple of shots of genuine Tennessee whiskey.

When you visit Old Dominick Distillery, you are taking a step back into history. The Canale family and the city of Memphis have been through thick and thin together, and both have come out shining. If you’re visiting the Memphis area, stop by and “Share a Sip of Pure Memphis” with the staff of Old Dominick Distillery. Cheers!
