In this city, it almost feels like you can’t turn a corner without running into a bit of history. The 901 is full of spots where famous people, from civil rights activists to musicians, have roamed or made their names. Whether you’re looking for an educational day or simply want to plant your feet where illustrious others have stood, this part of Tennessee has a little of both. If you want to immerse yourself in the most prominent places in town, here are the best landmarks and historical sites to visit around Memphis.

Pro tip: Take the historic Memphis trolleys to get you from site to site!

Sun Studio

Take a tour around Sun Studio, a legendary recording spot turned museum close to downtown. They call this place “The Birthplace of Rock N Roll” for good reason – many big names recorded some of their first hits here, like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, and more.

Memphis Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel

To learn more about Memphis’ civil rights history and Martin Luther King, Jr., plan a day at the Civil Rights Museum. This historical site goes in-depth into this city’s history and struggles for equal rights, and it also serves as a reminder of how much further we still have to go. You can also take a walk to the nearby I Am A Man Plaza.

Graceland

The home of Elvis Presley is arguably one of the most famous homes in the country, and you can take a tour of his grounds, airplanes, and more when you visit. They’ve even recently expanded the area’s hotel, shops, and restaurants, so there’s no shortage of things to do here.

Beale Street

The landmark that inspired a song is Beale Street itself. This strip in downtown Memphis is full of shopping, dining, and more along with tons of history steeped right into it. You can also catch some amazing music and shows on this street where many big names have played before.

Stax Museum

Stax Museum is another musical landmark in this city that hosts tours and events. Originally Satellite Records, Stax became a recording studio and record shop that helped create acclaim for many notable greats like Otis Redding.

Memphis Zoo

The Memphis Zoo is one iconic site you won’t want to miss. It’s touted as one of the best zoos in the country, and with over 3500 animals to see, you can make a whole day of visiting this landmark. They’ve even got special events and exhibits, so check out their site to see what’s upcoming.

Memphis Museum of Science and History (Formerly Pink Palace)

The palace is still pink, but the name has changed to the Memphis Museum of Science and History, or MOSH. With a planetarium, nature center, and more, treat the family to an educational day that is anything but boring.

The Peabody

You may have heard of the Peabody ducks, but this historic hotel is also known for its glitz and glamour in downtown Memphis. Visit for their delicious food, extravagant lodging, or yes, even to watch the ducks twice a day on their walk to the famous fountain.

Party on top of the Peabody is back!

Victorian Village

Not far from Sun Studio is Memphis’ Victorian Village, an enclave of 19th-century mansions, some of which have been converted into museums, such as the Woodruff-Fontaine House and Mallory-Neely House. You can also stay or dine at some of these houses, and this is perfect for the traveler looking to step back into the Victorian era.

Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum

The Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum is a historic home with a profound past. It allowed safe passage for many wishing to escape slavery in the South, and now it’s a museum with 19th-century artifacts and furnishings, and it gives a look inside the underground railroad in Memphis.

We like to say that Memphis exists at the intersection of cultures – a kind of metaphorical train station in which people of different backgrounds, ideologies, dreams, and mindsets intersect with one another.

The Central Station Hotel embodies that intersection like almost no other place in Memphis. A 100-year-old historic building, it was a bustling station at the height of passenger train travel, and remains an active train station to this day. Like the city itself, it has adapted to changing times and trends. In the 90’s, a $20 million investment helped transform the iconic space into a 123-room luxury experience that captures the Memphis spirit like no other hotel.

Situated in the South Arts District – a short walk from the National Civil Rights Museum, and other notable spots like Central BBQ and Wiseacre Brewing – Central Station is beloved by locals and visitors alike as a gateway to downtown Memphis. But the very thing that sets it apart is what you’ll find inside – a unique industrial theme that plays out through every corner of the hotel. One of Memphis’ most important exports – music – flows into each guest room with the turn of a knob, courtesy of a fresh-daily playlist of Memphis-inspired music.

An illuminated neon sign that hangs at the Central Station Hotel

Perhaps the most noteworthy stop on your Central Station stay is Eight & Sand, a popular listening lounge and bar. From a 500-strong vinyl collection to a one-of-a-kind cocktail menu, every aspect of the bar and lounge area has been crafted for a uniquely memorable evening. Equipped with EgglestonWorks Viginti loudspeakers lovingly produced right here in Memphis, you can literally hear the difference the moment you step through the door. It’s a spacious, luxurious setting that’s perfect for both music aficionados and cocktail connoisseurs. In a city that’s packed with great places to grab a drink, Eight & Sand stands out, both for its musical and mixology flavors.

But the Central Station Hotel’s local appeal doesn’t end there. Just head over to Beale Street and peruse the inspirational assortment of music memorabilia, or take a quick walk to several of Memphis’ most important music-themed attractions, including Graceland and the Memphis Blues Hall of Fame. And, for family-friendly excursions, the Children’s Museum and Memphis Zoo are just a short ride away.

There’s truly little left to be desired while staying at the Central Station Hotel, especially given all the creative and quirky appeal of the historical South Arts district in which it presides. Whether you’re sticking close to the hotel or further exploring one of the most unique neighborhoods in Memphis, there are countless options for dining, cocktails, live music, and shopping – all of them brimming with local flair. The Arcade Restaurant, The Cheesecake Corner, The Gray Canary, Loflin Yard, and Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken are all must-visits to get a true taste of both Memphis food and drink.

Ready to wet your whistle? Sample the diverse cocktail menus at Catherine & Mary’s, The Gray Canary, Old Dominick Distillery, or The Blue Monkey. Or, if shopping is more your speed, an assortment of unique retailers around Central Station provide a variety of options that are sure to please. With specialty shops like Stock & Belle, Downtown Candle Company, South Main Book Juggler, Primas Bakery & Boutique, and Walking Pants Curiosities, you’re guaranteed to experience a festive assortment of fashion, literature, housewares, and collectibles, all of which will ensure you’re walking the street in style.

Lounge at Central Station Hotel

Whether you’re a few blocks from the Central Station Hotel’s grand entrance or choose never to leave the building, Memphis music is always on the menu. Don’t miss the live entertainment at Earnestine & Hazels, and be sure to catch a show at The Orpheum, an iconic Memphis live music performance venue established in 1928. Looking for the Memphis music experience without all the walking? At Central Station Hotel, you’re covered. Remember Eight & Sand above? The bar located right inside CSH offers unique live music on a regular basis, with marquee, award-winning DJs like DJ Skratch Bastid and DJ Spinna putting on a show you’re not soon to forget.

While there is no shortage of exciting things to do in and around Central Station, if a little privacy and relaxation is your ultimate pursuit, then this landmark Memphis hotel is the only destination you’ll need. Feel free to chill out in one of the hotel’s meticulously-designed guest rooms, and revel in the early 20th century charm and luxurious amenities as you gaze upon scenic views of the rolling Mississippi River.

Intersections create change. Like the city itself, Central Station has adapted over time, preserving its signature magic while evolving alongside the world. As its name suggests, this hotel is central to all things Memphis, and lives as an ever-changing but always charming fixture in the southern city of soul.

Barbeque. Beale Street. Graceland. Blues, soul, rock’n’roll.

Memphis is famous worldwide for a lot of things — but for everything we’re famous for, there’s something else you might not know that makes our city special.

In this article, we look at seven things most people know about Memphis, plus another seven things they should know about.

Memphis is famous for its BBQ. Anyone who knows BBQ knows that Memphis is renowned for its slow-smoked pork. If you’re looking for all the Memphis BBQ restaurants that should be on your radar, we’ve even put together the Memphis BBQ trail for you!

…But Memphis is a serious wing city, too. Buffalo may have invented the chicken wing, but Memphis perfected it. We’re home to hundreds of amazing wing establishments and even host the World Championship Hot Wing Contest & Festival.

When it comes to wings, no other southern city compares. Check out our signature flavor, honey gold, at iconic local spots like Crumpy’s, Wing Guru, All-Star Hot Wings, and so many more.

Memphis is famous for Graceland, the world-renowned abode of Elvis Presley, which welcomes 500,000 fans of The King each year.

…But Memphis is also home to numerous arts and culture museums that are worth a stop. From the Stax Museum of American Soul Music (made famous by Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, and Isaac Hayes) to Sun Studio (made famous by BB King, Johnny Cash, Elvis, and Roy Orbison), to the Dixon Gallery & Gardens — among other art museums — art history of all kinds is alive and honored in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for being home to blues, soul, and rock’n’roll — not to mention chart-topping hip hop.

…But every style of music is thriving in Memphis. From critically-acclaimed singer-songwriters like Julien Baker, to Grammy-nominated folk-soul artist Valerie June, all the way to our electronic music scene, music of all genres is in the water in Memphis.

Memphis is famous for the Mississippi River, with locals and tourists alike exploring its shores.

…But Memphis is also home to Tom Lee Park. Situated on the river, this historic park is being transformed into one of the premier riverfronts in the country. A massive expansion project is currently underway, with 1,000 new trees, a playground, event space, and much more.

Memphis is famous for Beale Street, a music mecca in downtown Memphis, and a pivotal place in the history of blues music.

…But the Cooper-Young neighborhood has plenty of history to offer, too. From historic homes to the church basement Johnny Cash recorded his first album, to countless restaurants, bars, and breweries to explore, it’s got everything you’re looking for and more — not to mention the annual Cooper-Young Festival, which hosts 100,000 visitors for food, music, and more each year.

Memphis is famous for its FedEx headquarters, a Fortune 50 company employing approximately 30,000 Memphians.

…But other Fortune 500 Companies like International Paper and AutoZone also call Memphis home, collectively employing hundreds of thousands of Memphians. Discover dozens of top Memphis employers here.

Memphis is famous for the National Civil Rights Museum, built around the famed Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination. For over 50 years, this museum has educated visitors from far and wide about the Civil Rights Movement.

…But Memphis is also home to countless Black-led endeavors that champion arts, culture, activism, and so much more. One example: our friends over at nonprofits TONE and Unapologetic are working to develop the Orange Mound Tower, which is set to become a mixed-use arts, business, and housing space in one of the original Black communities in the United States.

Now you know!

If there’s one thing we can say about Memphians, it’s that we love a good time. Whether it’s eating good food and drinking good drinks, finding the best spots to listen to music, or even just discovering a new favorite spot to kick back and relax, there are tons of spots around the city that should be on your radar. Sure you’ve got your entertainment districts and we all love a meet-up on Beale, but there’s something special about the hotels popping up. Not only are they a great place for your family and friends to stay at when they’re in town, but they’re also perfect additions to your weekend lineup! Check out our picks for our favorite hotels!

The Central Station Hotel

Central Station Hotel has everything you need for the perfect night out, weekend brunch, stay or vacation, and so much more. What started as a 108 year old train station has now evolved into one of the city’s favorite hotels and serves as an anchor to the city’s South Main Arts District. As a vibrant neighborhood filled with music, art, history, and culture, it’s the perfect fit. Here are a couple of reasons why you have to add it to your list of places to stop by!

Bar at Central Station Hotel
Lounge at Central Station Hotel

Eight and Sand

Eight and Sand’s craft cocktails and delicious bites are the perfect addition to your late night hangouts. With the amazing music pumping throughout the hotel and the live dj lineup, you’ll find locals and visitors hanging here!

Music, music, and more music

From a listening room, Egglestonworks speaker, live music lineups in the lobby and on the patio, and curated playlists on speakers throughout the hotel, music lives and breathes within the hotel. As soon as you step into the space, you’ll see that it’s the perfect mix between a super swank lounge (especially with those delicious drinks we mentioned earlier) and your living room where you can kick back with your friends. Just down the hall and past the bar, the listening room has playlists highlighting Memphis’ iconic music legends, artists from today’s local music scene, and so much more. It’s the best way to get a taste of the sounds of the city. The fun continues outside too! You can’t miss the Live at the Tracks music series–there’s a lineup packed with some of the city’s favorite local artists and views overlooking South Main.

Hyatt Centric on Beale

If you’re in the market for a party, this hotel is absolutely for you! The Hyatt Centric on Beale is one of the best places to go. With a selection of bars throughout the hotel, a pool that’s perfect for all of those Instagram photos, and a rooftop that hosts one of the most live parties in Downtown Memphis, the Hyatt Centric is going to be a staple for you this summer. Speaking of summer staples, a new hotel is springing up next door and you’re going to want to keep it on your radar. The Caption by Hyatt is all about community connection. From the Talk Shop, tech-forward features, and modern design that incorporates Memphis’ soul, it’s a spot you can’t miss!

The Arrive

Headed up from The Central Station Hotel? If you’re into aesthetics, The Arrive Hotel is where you need to go! As soon as you step into the lobby, you’ll see that design is one of the property’s best features (and the vibes continue after you check into a room). If you’re catching up on a couple of meetings in the lobby/coffee shop, Vice + Virtue and Hustle and Dough are delicious ways to make the daily hustle way better. If you’re staying after 5, head down to Longshot and put your shuffleboard skills to use!

The Canopy

The Canopy is right at the entrance to Downtown Memphis and is one of the newest properties on the list! This is definitely the spot for those looking to hang out right in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. It’s right down the street from the FedEx Forum and it’s right across from AutoZone Park. A stellar feature of the property? The dining experiences. Their restaurant, Curfew, has a menu curated and created by Chef Fabio Viviani and has ample space for hanging out with friends.

The Memphian

If you haven’t been to the Memphian yet, it’s time to head to Overton Square! The hotel sits right next to The Hattiloo Theater and is in the heart of the entertainment district. A huge plus? The entertainment continues throughout the space. The restaurant, Complicated Pilgrim, not only has menu items that explore flavors from across the world, but there are also dishes that are nods to the city’s own culinary traditions! If you’re an Instagram expert, Tiger and Peacock is definitely for you. The Memphian has created the ultimate party experience at their rooftop bar. Think: velvet, disco balls, sequins, and all things glitz and glam!

Moxy Memphis

Moxy Memphis Downtown is where style meets Southern charm for today’s globetrotter. Inspired by the southern porch, our buzzing haven celebrates self-expression, connection, and play. Check in at Bar Moxy, enjoy craft drinks, local brews, and tasty bites, or grab 24/7 snacks at Pickups. Unwind on our Main Street porch with firepits, ping pong, bocce, and plenty of space to chill. Memphis is known for its monuments and museums honoring black history, but it’s also where many pivotal events took place. This month and any month, you can visit the sites where history happened and experience the local legacy of black activism and enterprise up close. Here are some places to pin.

Universal Life Insurance Building
480 Dr. M. L. K. Jr. Avenue

This office building was built in 1949 to house the country’s fourth-largest black-owned insurance company. Its architects, Moses and Calvin McKissack, chose its Egyptian Revival style to stand out from the western styles dominating Memphis’ midcentury cityscape. The building was restored by Self + Tucker Architects in 2018.

Mason Temple
930 Mason Street

The Mason Temple is the international sanctuary and central headquarters of the Church of God in Christ. In the 1950s and 1960s, it was a hub of local civil rights activities and the stage for Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “Mountaintop” speech. While Sunday services are no longer held there, tourists are welcome to visit.

Beale Street Baptist Church
379 Beale Street

Known as the “Mother of Black Churches,” Beale Street Baptist Church was built by and for survivors of slavery after the Civil War. In 1892, it served as Ida B. Wells’ office for the Free Speech, Memphis’ first black newspaper. A memorial plaza and life-size statue, which were unveiled in her honor last summer, are located right next door.

Robert R. Church Park
Corner of Beale and Fourth Street

On the other side of Beale Street Baptist Church, you’ll find the city’s first park for black citizens and visitors. It was founded in 1899 by Robert R. Church as part of “Church’s Park and Auditorium,” one of the only southern centers for black recreation during segregation. It now serves as a downtown greenspace and the site of countless cultural events.

To discover more local black landmarks, visit Memphis Heritage Trail or download their app. You can take a virtual tour of the South Memphis, Downtown, Orange Mound and Soulsville neighborhoods that highlight key figures and events in Memphis black history.

While we’re all used to showing love to the special people in our lives this month, we’re all about showing the city some affection too. With the number of local businesses, restaurants, and things to do in Memphis, these are only a handful of ways to give the city some love. Use this as your inspiration and get to loving on Memphis!

Eat Local

Memphis’ restaurants have been working non-stop to get you the delicious food you crave during the pandemic. From shifting operations to getting creative with how they serve up meals, there’s so much that goes into keeping a restaurant afloat during such a difficult time. Why not return the love and make sure you’re eating local? Just moved to town and don’t have a favorite spot yet? Here are some of the city’s favorites

Wing Guru – If you don’t know by now, Memphis loves wings. Not only do we love them, but we also just do them better – period. The city has hundreds (yes, we’ve counted) of restaurants serving wings and the Wing Guru has joined the ranks of some of the best in the city.

Global Café – If you haven’t heard why Global Café is amazing, feel free to check out this article to fill you in. Memphis is fortunate to have so many business owners of diverse backgrounds who share their culture’s cuisine with us and this one stop shop builds yet another delicious bridge.

Restaurant Iris – Chef Kelly English not only shows up for his customers, but also for his fellow restauranteursDuring the pandemic, and even before then, Chef Kelly has offered meals to those who need it, found creative ways to serve his outstanding food, and brought attention to his peers in the restaurant industry.

If you’re a Memphis food veteran, you’re probably looking for something new to add to your local food routine. Here’s our article with new restaurants and ones to look out for this year!

Shop Local

You knew this was coming. If you’re eating local, shopping local is totally the next step. Whether you’re looking to get a gift for that special someone or you’re just in the market for a little retail self-care, Memphis has plenty of local shops to choose from! Here are just a couple to keep in mind

Greenhaus Memphis – Are you a plant parent? If so, Greenhaus (formerly known as Golden Hour) should be your next stop. Not only are the plants beautiful, but this shop’s vibes are beyond immaculate. Plants not your thing? No worries. The team also keeps self-care essentials in stock making for the ultimate treat your self-experience.

Primas Bakery and Boutique – This cousin duo has taken both of their concepts and combined them into one pretty cool store! Whether you’re looking for delicious (and absolutely beautiful) desserts with RM Petit Cakes or something that’s both unique and celebrates Mexican heritage with ShopMuchoyou’ll find both under the same roof.

Café Noir – Looking to expand your reading horizons? Café Noir’s got you covered. This locally owned bookstore uplifts stories by Black, PoC, and LGTQIA+ writers and, while ordering is all online at the moment, with a prospective open date of Summer 2021, the shop will open its doors and feature fair-trade coffee!

Explore the City Safely

By now, we all know that keeping you, your family and your fellow Memphians safe is the number one priority. So, when you’re safely visiting attractions and sites, mask up and keep distant. Some of Memphis’ museums and tours have changed their experiences to accommodate safety practices. Looking for even more than six feet? The great outdoors is the way to go. Here are some of Memphis’ wide-open spaces

Shelby Farms Park – With over 4,500 acres of green space, Shelby Farms is a no-brainer for those looking to have a Memphis adventure. Whether you’re looking over one of the lakesgoing for a run on one of the trails, or taking your dog for a walk at the dog park, there’s plenty of ways to enjoy Shelby Farms.

Memphis Zoo – The Zoo is back open and there’s no better way to discover your wild side. While you may not be able to cuddle up to the cute animals, looking at them from afar is just as great. Also, if you haven’t gotten your Valentine’s Day date together yet, the Zoo is always a winner.

Botanic Gardens + Dixon Gallery and Gardens – Gardens are a great way to get outdoors, even when our favorite flowers may not be in bloom. No matter if you’re sitting on the swings in the Botanic Garden’s Big Back Yard or taking a look at the art before perusing the Dixon’s gardens, these two stops are perfect for some distant relaxation.

Show Some Neighborly Love

Memphians are what make the city the place that it is. Without its citizens, Memphis wouldn’t be the place we all know and love. Aside from committing to the safety practices in place, reaching out and helping your fellow Memphians in need is the best way to show some love. Looking for some organizations that could use your support? Lucky for you, Memphians are dedicated to improving our hometown, so there are plenty to choose from! Here’s a handful to get you started:

MIFA – With so many different programs to help our fellow Memphians in need, there are many ways to give MIFA a helping hand. Whether you’re volunteering to deliver meals or donating masks, it’s easy to give a helping hand.

Memphis is an exceptional place to live, in large part thanks to its unparalleled city culture. Steeped in a rich history and fueled by promise of the future, Memphis is bursting at the seems with things that help residents strike a balance between jobs and everyday life. The Bluff City has all the cultural amenities of a bustling metropolis, but with a small town feel that makes it more accessible to plug into. If you’re considering a career change or a new place to call home for remote work, read on to learn more about the cultural legacy of Memphis.

Legendary music scene

As you may have heard, Memphis changed the way the world listened to music, and no discussion about Memphis would be complete without noting the legendary and iconic music scene. You’ve heard about the music giants, like Elvis, BB King, and Otis Redding, but what you may not have heard is that Memphis remains a hub for artists today. From Justin Timberlake to the slew of artists that perform around the city every day, Memphis has a music scene that rivals big cities coast to coast. Pop into any given bar on any given night of the week and you’re bound to hear world-class music. That’s what attracts artists from all over the world to record and perform in Memphis, like Bruno Mars, who recorded and filmed his hit “Uptown Funk” right here in Memphis. And while music may seem like something you can find in any city, it’s deeply ingrained into the culture and celebrated by the people here. If your job brings you to Memphis, you can expect a city culture that’s largely centered around music.

A thriving place for the arts

Much like the music scene, Memphis is home to a plethora of arts organizations. From street murals and mosaics to the high arts like ballet and theatre, Memphis has year-round access to some of the best and most diverse artists in the country. And unlike other cities, there’s not an air of pretentiousness surrounding the arts here. In Memphis, you can bring your questions and curiosity to explore the arts among likeminded individuals ready and waiting to welcome you into the fold. From museums to the performing arts to galleries and exhibits, there’s always something new to see and experience in the arts in Memphis. It’s what makes Memphis such a sought-after place for careers in the arts – here, you can make a living while pursuing your passion.

Unparalleled food scene

Some say it’s the food that defines cities, and we’d have to agree. In Memphis, food is more than just something you eat; it’s a bridge to different communities and cultures and a powerful storytelling tool. From nationally recognized food events, like the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, to historic cultural institutions dating back to the civil rights movement, like the Four Way, Memphis food always tells a story. With James Beard Award-nominated chefs, there’s no shortage of high-end dining either. And for every restaurant that exists in Memphis, there are dozens of foodies ready to become your brunch buddy. Forget boring salads and sad sandwiches – do your networking and bond with your coworkers over some of the best food in the world.

Memphis: the home of soulful living

Whether it’s the arts that inspire us or the food that fills us, the cultural amenities will leave you wanting to discover more as you get to know the city. But above all the history, entertainment, and cultural institutions that exist here, it’s how the people bring those things to life that makes Memphis special. Memphis is the home of soulful living, where balance between work and play thrives and put their soul into how they experience the city every day. Wondering what it’s like to bring your soul to your own passions and be inspired every day? Look no further, Memphis is the home for you.

In Memphis, you’re always dancing on a fine line—dancing between what you know and what you have yet to find out. We’re perfectly happy enjoying our world-famous live music, sports, and barbecue all while charting our own course searching for hidden gems off the beaten path.

For those not in the know, we invite you to take a dance on the fine line with us. Here’s a peek at 7 under-the-radar activities that won’t disappoint:

Ride Your Bike on Big River Crossing

Hop on your bike or grab your running shoes and move across the Mighty Mississippi by way of Big River Crossing. This pedestrian bridge is the longest of its kind along the entire river, connecting Memphis to West Memphis and providing access to other trails. It also provides a one-of-a-kind view of the Memphis skyline. Open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

Taste the Magic at Old Dominick Distillery

Memphis’s oldest distillery produces six spirits including whiskeys, vodkas, and their signature Memphis Toddy. For $12, you’re able to tour their entire facility and see what goes into making their spirits, followed by a tasting of all six. It’s a great way to kick off a weekend!

Explore the Memorial Park Crystal Shrine Grotto

Artist Dionicio Rodriguez built this man-made cavern using a style of concrete construction called Faux Bois. Everything at the Memorial Park Crystal Shrine Grotto is made to look real, but is actually styled from concrete, except of course for the religious dioramas depicting the life of Jesus Christ.

Walk Through Elmwood Cemetery

Encounter more than 100 years of Memphis history at Elmwood Cemetery. Underneath the canopy of the old trees lay the remains of some of the people who helped shape Memphis. There is no charge to visit, but there is a small fee if you want a docent-led tour. Either way, it is a fun and interesting way to spend a nice afternoon. Open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily.

Go Back in Time at Malco Summer Drive-In Theater

One of the few remaining in the country, The Malco Summer Drive-In hosts a series of movie nights featuring old classics and cult favorites. Here’s how it works: show up at the theatre and park your car before sundown. When it’s dark enough, the movie starts followed by another and another, all night long. Expect themed nights, with three to six movies each.

Try Non-Traditional Barbecue

You may have already had your fill of our delicious Memphis Style Barbecue (if that’s even possible), but have you taken it past ribs and chicken to the next level? I’m talking about barbecue spaghetti, barbecue nachos, barbecue pizza, barbecue tofu, or a deep-fried cornish hen. You can find many of these dishes at our barbecue joints.

Is That a Real Shrunken Head?

Memphis has its fair share of museums, all corroborating our rich history and culture. But none like the Pink Palace Mansion. This Memphis institution doesn’t focus on any one particular aspect of the city’s culture but instead covers all things about the Mid-South: natural history, wildlife, Memphis history, the cotton industry, plus rare oddities like the infamous shrunken head.

Let’s face it, lurking under every great city, is a great treasure hunt… So go ahead explore, poke, try, question, and turn Memphis inside out. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to #BringYourSoul!

A New Century of Soul in Memphis has started to gain attention from the rest of the country, including Forbes. Memphis is quickly growing into a recognized hot-spot for music, art, and, of course, some of the best food this side of the Mississippi.

“Eating well in Memphis isn’t hard to do and the food ranges from offerings from nationally recognized chefs to down-home southern cooking that was a staple for Civil Rights activists.” writes Patrice J. Williams (@PatriceJWill) in the article. “Memphis natives Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman have several James Beard nominations, most recently in 2019, for their string of restaurants including Andrew Michael Italian Kitchen and Hog & Hominy.”

Now great chefs and restaurants are just the beginning, our city has so much to offer for locals and our guests alike. As this year marked our bicentennial and we enter a New Century of Soul, there is an overflowing amount of opportunities for fun and culture in the city.

Head over to the Stax Museum to learn about legendary Memphians who still influence our current music scene today. Get over to the bustle of Beale street and hear the sounds of live music dance through the street. Grab a delicious bite to eat, and check out some fantastic art our local galleries.

Head on over to Forbes to read more about our iconic city.

Whether you’re into historic tours, concerts, music legends, nature, beer, or fine foods – Memphis has it all!

Memphis is a city rich in culture and history. Whether you’re into historic tours, concerts, music legends, nature, beer, or fine foods – Memphis has it all!

Along the Mississippi River

Ever heard of Mud Island? Well, to get there you’ll need to ride the monorail (only a couple of dollars). Once there, you can visit the Mississippi River Museum, walk the length of the river itself (Big River Crossing pedestrian bridge), catch a show at the Mud Island Amphitheatre, or even take a riverboat ride.

Now, for something really different, visit The Pyramid (sorry, no mummies here). To get there, you’ll first have to ride the country’s tallest free-standing elevator up 28 stories (300 feet). Considering the structure is glass on all sides, you’re guaranteed some spectacular views. Once at the top, you’ll be in the Lookout, an out-of-this-world restaurant and bar. Head outside to the glass-bottomed observation decks where you’ll get the best 360-degree view of Memphis.

Graceland

Whether you’re an Elvis fan or not, this is a must-see attraction for both locals and out-of-towners. Explore this mansion tour and learn all about the hip rocking, superstar entertainer. You will find yourself immersed in Elvis’ car and airplane collections, his ponies, his show-stopping outfits, and so much more.

Finally, at the gates to Graceland, grab a marker and leave your mark (literally) on the sidewalk, stone wall, and other surfaces surrounding the property (don’t worry, it’s legal!). Fans have been doing this Elvis was still living at the mansion. It’s a tried and true tradition!

Tired of seeing how the rich and famous live? Take a trip over to Beale Street and snap a photo with one immortalized in stone (bronze) instead! The bronze statue of Elvis was erected on Beale Street in 1997. Channel your inner Elvis and nail the stance for a truly memorable pic.

Beale Street

Beale Street is the place to visit for music lovers. The Memphis Rock ‘N’ Soul Museum is at the corner of B.B. King Blvd and Beale Street and provides a comprehensive journey of rock ‘n’ roll and soul music. Here you’ll be face-to-face with priceless artifacts and memorabilia. As a side note: Shelby County residents get free admission on Tuesdays from 2-7 p.m.

Ready to keep going? Great! Make sure to stop by one of the many bars and grab yourself a Beale Big A** Beer for the journey. Oh – and once you’ve downed that chilly and delicious beverage – grab yourself another one inside A. Schwab. After perusing the gifts, shirts, and other Memphis swag, head to the back of the store and grab yourself an old-timey malt, milkshake, soda, or choose your own adventure!

Feel your stomach rumbling? No worries! You can have the Best Ribs Ever at Blues City Café or a thin, deep-fried burger at Dyer’s. Beale Street has a plethora of foods to accommodate any and all appetites.

The Oddities

Go mural hunting! Memphis has become a hot spot for mural artists. You can catch amazing artwork almost anywhere in the city. Go on an impromptu scavenger hunt and see how many pictures you can get. Check out the Memphis Art Project to learn more. And don’t forget to post those pics (Memphis and its artists will thank you)!

Speaking of photo ops – visit any of the 1950s and 60s inspired establishments for a retro-esque souvenir. Make sure to snag one of those snazzy frames from any one of the number of shops to frame your photo forever.

We hope your visitors have fun and enriching experiences! Share your pics with us on Facebook!

The website Thrillist is constantly looking for new and exciting places to visit, foods to try and destinations to discover. Recently the website released an article about the 15 coolest places around the world to visit in August. Memphis just happened to make the list. Here are a handful of reasons why Thrillist decided to name Memphis in a group that included everything from Palm Springs and Barbados to Costa Smeralda and Budapest.

All of the Festivals

With the bicentennial for the city of Memphis happening throughout 2019, Thrillist noted that festivals and activities are taking place over the course of the whole year. It highlighted the different food festivals, as well as the upcoming Delta Fair. Of course, Thrillist made sure to point out the pig races and carnival rides at the Delta Fair. If you’re around Memphis beginning Aug. 30 through Sept. 8, be sure to come out to the fair.

Can’t make it to Memphis by year’s end? There’s nothing to worry about. Memphis festivals don’t stop after the bicentennial celebration has come and gone. In May, Beale Street Music Festival is one of the city’s most popular events. The festival is a three-day outdoor concert extravaganza with past headliners such as Dave Matthews Band, Post Malone, Ed Sheeran, Paul Simon and The Killers.

Foodies are big fans of Memphis because of the year-round fests celebrating local eats. Highlights include April’s Southern Hot Wing Festival and Rajun Cajun Crawfish Festival, June’s Craft Food and Wine Festival and October’s Memphis Food and Wine Festival.

Elvis

For music fans, taking in Graceland is a must. Beyond just visiting Graceland, though, Thrillist also mentioned Elvis Week. While Elvis Week has already come and gone (it started on Aug. 9 and went through Aug. 17) you can plan for the week next year.

Graceland is more than just a former home of Elvis. It’s a fun experience for both the avid Elvis follower and the casual fan. Standard tours of the house include a peek inside the King’s famed home, with recent renovations done to recreate rooms to look the same as they did in 1977. On the Graceland property, you can also find the Presley Motors Automobile Museum — a place for visitors to check out some of the singer’s favorite cars. At the Elvis Discovery Exhibits, you’ll see featured artifacts from different eras of his career.

When Elvis Week comes to Memphis, highlights of the event include live musical impersonators, a 5K charity run, tribute artist competitions and expert panel discussions.

Don’t Forget Beale Street

Beale Street is one of the most famous streets in the country. There’s always something going on here, and during the Memphis bicentennial, even more is taking place than normal. If you’re visiting, you absolutely need to stop by and take in this world-class location for bars, clubs and live music.

Some of the Top World Destinations

Many of the destinations on the list for the top 15 coolest places around the world to visit in August were international (although it did have a handful of other spots in the United States). These locations include Edinburgh, Scotland; Kazakhstan; Argentina; Queensland, Australia; Cotswolds, United Kingdom; Budapest, Hungary; Costa Smeralda, Sardinia; and Barbados and Anguilla.

Many of these destinations share the same amazing traits as Memphis: incredible nightlife, fun festivals, delectable cuisine and parties that last all through the night.

Other U.S. Destinations

Thrillist did include a handful of other places in the United States as top travel destinations in the month of August. The cities are spread out throughout the country, but the list includes the Catskills, New York; Boston; Reno, Nevada; Traverse City, Michigan; the coast of Maine; and Palm Springs, California.

Memphis has the distinction of being the only southern city in the United States to be included as a top pick by Thrillist.

Discover the City of Memphis for Yourself

If you live in Memphis, you already know why it’s a top travel destination (and why Thrillist fell in love with it). If you’re considering a move or a visit, these are only a handful of the reasons why you need to check the city out.

Memphis is one of a kind and has so much to recommend it. So whether you have a few days to visit or are thinking about a permanent move, now is the perfect time to see all that Memphis has to offer. With perfect year-round weather and a jam-packed event schedule, any time is truly the perfect time to come to Memphis.

You’re never without activities and things to do in Memphis. Whether you want to check out a new restaurant, a new club or a new art exhibit, you’ll find something that fits your outgoing desire. But what happens when you want to find something a bit out of the ordinary? Thankfully, there is plenty of that in Memphis as well. So, if you’ve been looking for cool, hidden and unique things to do in Memphis, you’ve come to the right place.

Ducks in a Hotel

Would you ever guess a high-end hotel would actually let ducks march in through the lobby? Well, at the Peabody Hotel, which is one of the most historic hotels in the state, that’s exactly what happens. Every day a team of ducks march through the lobby at 11 a.m. and eventually into the fountain. The hotel even rolls out a literal red carpet for the ducks.

This is one of those activities you may only need to see once, but it is a grand time, especially if you have kids. There’s just something whimsical about ducks walking through the hotel lobby that makes it worth seeing.

Beer-Drinking Goats

If you’re going to have ducks walking the red carpet, why not have beer-drinking goats? If this sounds like your cup of tea (or pint of beer), visit Silky O’Sullivan’s, located on Beal Street. This is an Irish joint (while there, order the “Diver” mystery cocktail), and it is home to a number of goats. So if you ever grow tired of the piano music from inside the bar, you can come out and spend your time with the goats on the outside.

The Shrunken Head

Here’s an odd one for you: The Pink Palace was originally built by the founder of the Piggly Wiggly grocery chain. There’s a large museum inside, with all kinds of odd items. This includes a shrunken head, which was given to the owner after he visited with tribes in South America. Maybe it’s real. Maybe it’s not. But it’s strange and unusual, that’s for sure.

Drive-In Movie Night

The Malco Summer Drive-In theater is a great chance to travel back in time. Sure, the drive-in movie isn’t the same draw as it once was, but there’s just something exciting and oddly romantic that makes taking in this attraction such a fun experience. Plus, most of the movies put on display are classics from a time period gone by.

Discover the Unusual Side of Memphis

These are just a handful of cool, hidden and unusual things to do in Memphis. In fact, some of them are downright strange. However, it gives you a sampling of what you really have in store for you in the city if you’re interested. Whatever you decide to do, just know there’s always a new adventure for you in Memphis, often right around the corner.

Saveur is one of the world’s premier culinary magazines. It provides its readers with information about food, food travel and the best places around the globe to find the best experiences with food. It is an honor and a privilege to be recognized by the writers and editors of Saveur as a favorite food destination. That is why the different types of Memphis food that we enjoy and love is being honored by Saveur.

Memphis Food, 2018 Reader’s/Editor’s Choice

Bloggers, food personalities, chefs and other culinary stars gathered in November 2018 to spend some time discussing what makes Memphis food special. Attendees hailed from as far away as Germany, Chile and South Africa, as Saveur issued its choice awards to food and travel bloggers, the elite food photographers and those who influence what we think about food.

Those who came to Memphis for the two-day experience were exposed to some of the best Memphis has to offer. Beyond the briskets and other meats that are traditional to Memphis barbeque, the group was treated to local charcuterie, wines and craft beers, as well as Cuban-inspired fare from local restaurateur Lisa Toro. Dining on Cuban biscuits, sandwiches and specialty cocktails gave a different perspective of the type of Memphis food offered that goes beyond what is considered traditional Southern food.

A Taste of Winning Memphis Food

Those who attended the event were treated to a surprise field trip. They were taken to a lunch that was provided by local restaurant favorite Four Way Restaurant. Located at 998 Mississippi Boulevard in the city’s historic “Soulsville” neighborhood, it has been providing down home meals since 1946, nearly 75 years. It was a favorite spot for dining for civil rights leaders like the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Diners got to taste truly American food, including greens and okra, fried catfish, turkey with dressing and other classically soul-inspired food. A panel discussion featuring Cynthia Daniels, founder of Memphis’ Black Restaurant Week and Four Way owner Patrice Bates Thompson helped hammer home the point on how diversity shapes the Memphis food scene and inspires locals from all walks and shades to contribute to the city’s culinary reputation.

The rest of the world is coming to learn what locals and tourists already know about Memphis food; it is a favorite food in America. The offerings of soul food, barbeque and other local, regional and national cuisines place Memphis on par with other cities across the country. Whether it’s a visit to Four Way Restaurant, or ribs at Central BBQ (or any of the great barbeque restaurants in Memphis) spending time dining in Memphis can give a great perspective of why the world came in November 2018 to celebrate Memphis food!

You have plenty of things to do in Memphis. This city of more than 652,000 (making it the 25th largest in the United States!) is home to lots of attractions that can appeal to every appetite. Speaking of appetite, some of the best barbecue on earth is smoked and served right in Memphis. It is also the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll, with the famous Sun Records Studio located at 706 Union Street, where Elvis Presley began his journey to become the King of Rock.

With so many things to do in Memphis, trying to learn everything you can to plan that perfect vacation can be overwhelming. There are things you can do that will make this task lest daunting and help you make the most of your time.

Visit the Memphis Local Library

The Memphis Public Library is a library system of 18 branches with a circulation of 250,000 items, including books, maps and reference guides. It is the place to go for information about the city and learn all you can about things to do in Memphis. The library offers a tour of the wonderful, rich history of this river city. This tour can be the perfect starting point for learning and becoming familiar with the different parts of the city.

Take One of the Many Memphis Tours

Yes, tours of Memphis are designed more for tourists than locals. But if you’re new to the city, you won’t know much of the information these tours are providing. Going on varying tours will help educate you on important locations and activities in the city. From historic walking tours and ghost tours to food tours, taking a tour is a great way to spend a Saturday as you’ll learn something new about Memphis.

Stop by the Delta Fair & Music Festival

There are other great festivals in Memphis taking place throughout the year, but this just happens to be one of the bigger events in Memphis. Yes, many of the attractions will be taken down after the fair. However, the main benefit is all the food trucks and shops. Most of these are locally owned, which makes it easier to sample an array of food options. Tasting the different food and beverage selections at the festivals will help you discover which restaurants to visit later.

Meetup.com

Meetup.com is a website that connects individuals with similar interests in the same city. So whether you’re looking to join a book club, take dancing lessons, photograph the natural surroundings or connect with other people who like the Grateful Dead, there is a group for you. This will not only introduce you to new locations throughout the city, but it will help connect you with like-minded people. Meetup.com is a free website to use, but you will need to create an account with the site.

Visiting Memphis

One of the best ways to learn a city is to immerse yourself completely in its culture, the sights and its sound. You can do this by scheduling a guided tour of the city. A tour, whether on foot, by boat or in a bus, takes you to the different places of interest that make a visit to Memphis special. Your tour should include hot spots for dining and entertainment, historical sites and, of course, a visit to Elvis Presley’s home Graceland. Any way you go, it is another way to get to know Memphis, up-close and personal.

You can also talk with locals to find out their favorite spots as well as the events and activities that are happening in the city. Learn what you can about Memphis and take that knowledge for a ride in the city of great food, great music and great people!

Let’s be honest. There are a million wonderful things to do in Memphis, which is why we get over 10 million visitors to our city every year. So where do we — as Memphians — go for day trips if we have the time and budget to get away? It’s tough, but here are five places to visit when the bar is already being set pretty high at home:

1. Little Rock, Arkansas

Whether you want to see history or get away from it, Little Rock is your place to go. See the William J. Clinton Presidential Library or enjoy the Museum of Discovery. Take in the River Market District or visit the Rock Town Distillery. Whether you’re up for visiting the Arkansas Arts Center or the Little Rock Zoo, you’ll certainly find something to explore that’ll make the trip worth your time and effort.

2. Nashville, Tennessee

As the capital of Tennessee, Nashville has a lot to offer. Visit the “church of country music” or see the city’s replica of the Greek Parthenon in Centennial Park. Visit Broadway or take a live walking tour. And above all, visit one of the famous food establishments such as Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack or Rolf & Daughters. You won’t leave disappointed.

3. Oxford, Mississippi

Named after the British city of Oxford, there’s much to see and do on this day trip. Explore the campus of Ole Miss (with its many unique opportunities) or visit the famous, beloved home of William Faulkner. Enjoy the city’s farmer’s market (known as OXCM) or visit Big Bad Breakfast in the Mid-Town Shopping Mall. There’s truly something for everyone in this city.

4. Tupelo, Mississippi

Best known for being “the birthplace of Elvis,” this might be the only spot in the world that gets anywhere close to loving Elvis as much as we do. But — if you’re looking to put a little space between you and the king of rock ‘n’ roll —  there’s more to this town than meets the eye. Visit the 444-mile Natchez Trace Parkway or check out the famous automobile museum. And, perhaps the greatest reason of all to go: Here, it’s acceptable to eat fried chicken with biscuits and gravy for breakfast.

5. Water Valley, Mississippi

This is the getaway on this list that’s not like the others. Water Valley has become a much-loved day trip location precisely because it’s an escape from the big city. Known for being a small, laid-back town with state forests and a decent brewing company, the reason to visit Water Valley is there’s really not much to do. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need. If you need some R & R for your heart and soul, this is your spot.

No matter what you choose to do, enjoy your time away! But just know that the best part of taking one of these day trips will be coming back home.

There are plenty of fun fun places to go in Memphis. Memphis is more than a city with Graceland, Sun Records, the Reverend Al Green and great barbeque. It’s a destination city that has the best of Southern hospitality and Northern sensibility. If you are looking to commune in the great outdoors, you can do so in Memphis. If you are looking for nightlife, great music and world-class cuisine, you can also find it in Memphis. The city is more than one thing for one person; it is everything for everyone!

Looking for some of the fun places to visit while in Memphis in 2019? Here is a list of the top five destinations that should be on your checklist of must-see destinations when you come to the “bluff city.” Of course, don’t limit yourself to these suggestions; make sure you make the most of your time in Memphis and take in all of the beauty that this city has to offer.

1. Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum

You may be familiar with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, or the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. You may not, however, be familiar with the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum in Memphis. The museum is located at 191 Beale Street, the street that is the birthplace of blues and rhythm and blues music. First started as a research museum of the Smithsonian Institution, it became the first such museum associated with the Smithsonian that is not in New York or Washington, D.C.

2. Cooper-Young Historic District

The Cooper-Young Historic District is a neighborhood area bordered by Cooper and Young Streets in the heart of the city. It is where budding artists, artisans, hipsters and the eclectic crowd hang out, drink coffee and make music. The neighborhood is unique and has a vibe all unto itself. Ask locals about the Cooper-Young festival that occurs every September.

3. The Player’s Championship (TPC) at Southwind (Golf)

You may not be a member of this prestigious course, home to the World Golf Championship TPC‒Southwind event up until 2018, but if you are planning a destination outing, wedding or corporate event, what better place than a tour-level golf course and club? The par 70, 7,244-yard course offers great views of the natural beauty all around Memphis.

4. The Peabody Hotel

Not too far from the banks of the Mississippi River lies the famous Peabody Hotel on 2nd Street downtown. Although fun can be had at a hotel, the Peabody Ducks are the real attraction here. The “duck march,” a tradition that dates back to 1940, involves a visit by these famous residents to the lobby fountain at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

5. Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum is a historic theater house that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you like the theater and really like to have fun taking in a touring Broadway show, the Orpheum is the place to go. Who needs to go to New York when you can travel to Memphis to watch a show in a bustling Northern-like Southern town?

The Travel Channel has featured shows about delicious foods and amazing places in the world to visit. Now they’ve set their sites on Memphis!

In a recent article, the Travel Channel stated that Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!

With things like our world-famous barbeque, our impact on the civil rights movement, and our works of art, it’s no wonder why we are on their radar.

Memphis is a cultural melting pot in the South. It’s also an easy destination to travel to, no matter where you might be coming from. Whether you’re flying from New York or driving down from Indianapolis, it’s easy to visit, which is one of the reasons why it is such a hot destination.

Travel Channel said Memphis is the hottest southern destination of 2019!

Perfect For All Ages

Travel Channel highlighted a number of reasons why Memphis is such an excellent travel destination for this summer. Why? Because there’s something for everyone to do, no matter the age.

Summer is the perfect time for families to get out and travel with school no longer in session. Because of this, the perfect destination needs to have activities for children of all ages. Yes, you’ll find plenty of cultural sights for educational purposes, and what child doesn’t love some sticky, messy BBQ? But beyond all of this, there are fun outing activities that both you and your children will love.

Just Some of the Great Activities

There’s no limit to the activities you and your family can take in. With the hundreds of possible southern locations Travel Channel could have selected as its hottest southern travel destination, the reason it picked Memphis was because of these limitless activities.

You can visit the River Line Trail, which was just recently renovated and finished. With kid-friendly activities along the water, fun tree houses, a 30-acre Tom Lee Park, plus festivals taking place throughout the summer, this is a prime destination when you want to get outside, take in the water, and enjoy your time with your family.

Are you an Elvis fan? Even if you were born after the King of Rock passed on, you’ve likely heard his music and know just how important he was to moving the music scene around the world forward. Well, you owe it to yourself to discover Graceland. While in Memphis you can visit the King’s music room, and a fan favorite “Jungle Room,” which is the literal definition of a Man Cave. Just make sure to pick up the Elvis favorite peanut butter and banana sandwich (which is, naturally, deep friend).

Make Your Own Memphis Memories

We could list out the hundreds of reasons why you should come to visit Memphis. From the food to the music to the culture to the festivals. But that takes some of the fun out of discovering Memphis for yourself. Travel Channel doesn’t just pick destinations on a whim. After all, it has television advertisements to sell, so it won’t make up random spots. It does its research and it puts its best foot forward so you can take advantage of its advice.

All of that is why you shouldn’t just read a list of things to do in Memphis. You need to come, explore, and make your own Memphis memories.

Bring your bib

Make sure to bring your bib when you visit Memphis. While there are plenty of places to see and things to do in the city, you’ll have your hands full with all the incredible food spots. And while there’s no shortage of food options, you’ll be in heaven if you’re a fan of barbecue (and if you’re not, you’ll soon be a fan after visiting Memphis).

Memphis loves its barbecue so much that there are over 100 different joints located right in the city. If you want to learn the art of barbecue, sign up for a class with the Memphis Barbecue Supply, or check out the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contests, where you’ll see the best of the best duke it out for top barbecue honors.

A life-changing history lesson

The city of Memphis is also a walking history lesson. This is one of the reasons why it’s such an excellent destination for parents and children alike. You’re never too old or too young to learn about civil rights. The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis is a large compound that includes the Lorraine Motel. This is where Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated. You’ll also find insights into Rosa Parks and how the civil rights movement spread throughout the country.

There are plenty of fantastic destinations found around the United States. However, few give you the same kind of life-changing history insights as what you’ll find in Memphis, Tennessee.

Keep your camera ready

You never know where you’ll find works of art in Memphis. You may have noticed graffiti has taken on new forms in recent years. No longer is it just the tagging of buildings with intricate lettering (at best). In the city of Memphis , you’ll see this form of art taken to a completely different level.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has brought on world-class artists to transform the outside of buildings around the city into incredible works of art. Many of these paintings are directly inspired by famous Renaissance paintings. So if you look up and swear you saw the larger-than-life painting in an art history class you took in college, you probably did. The big difference here is (outside of the scale) is that you’ll actually be allowed to take a picture of the painting. And trust us when we say these jaw-dropping works of building art are well worth photographing.

Every season is a good season

There’s really not a bad time to visit Memphis. There are activities and events going on nearly every weekend of the year. Plus, the summers aren’t as hot as what you’ll find farther south, and the winters are mild. So you’ll find a happy medium right here.

TripSavvy is one of the leading travel websites in the world. It is designed to help connect lovers of travel with the best destinations. Whether travelers know exactly where they want to go or they are simply searching for inspiration on a new destination, TripSavvy has the answers.

Every year, TripSavvy selects a brand-new top destination for the year. To do this, the website combs through everything from the destination’s cultural impact and tours to the food options and potential activities a visitor can take part in. For 2019, TripSavvy selected Memphis as its overall top destination for visitors.

Discovering Memphis

As a local, I have known Memphis to be a beautiful, inspiring city. There’s something to see and experience around every corner. In the last several years, all kinds of exciting constructions and opportunities have breathed new life into the city. Not all of these new opportunities are exclusively for locals though. There are plenty of destinations for visitors, which is exactly why TripSavvy selected Memphis as the top city to discover.

The travel website highlighted Crosstown Concourse as one addition to the city that it found attractive. Built in the old Sears distribution warehouse, the renovated space has over a dozen recently opened restaurants. It basically takes the concept of the classic food court and ratchets it up to a whole new level.

Railgarten received a mention as well, with its 1.5-acre playground for adults. If you haven’t been there before, it includes everything from a classic tiki bar to an ice cream parlor, a ping pong room and a stage for live performances — and it even has a sandbox for adults.

More Than What’s New

It’s more than just the new establishments that attracted TripSavvy to the city of Memphis though. It also mentioned the Memphis Pink Palace Museum. While this destination has received a bit of a renovation in recent years, it is a classic historical museum that plays an important role in the city.

The website brought to light all the outdoor elements that nature lovers can take advantage of in Memphis. There is the city zoo, which has a brand-new hippo exhibit. It also points to the bike paths that connect throughout much of the city. It’s even possible to ride over the Mississippi River.

What Other Cities Did TripSavvy Mention?

Memphis is king of the mountain when it comes to 2019 travel, according to TripSavvy. But what other cities did the travel website highlight (and TripSavvy beat out)? Some of the most notable cities include London, Toronto, Los Angeles, Portland, Tokyo and San Antonio.

That’s a pretty impressive list — which makes Memphis taking the top spot all the more impressive.

All of this highlights what I, as well as most other locals, already know: The city of Memphis is alive and bursting with new activities and historical ventures to experience.

There’s no denying it — music defines Memphis. Roam the internet for stories about the nation’s top music cities, and Memphis always seems to make the list. That’s because we’re known as the home of blues, soul, rockabilly and rock ’n’ roll.

And don’t ignore the fact that Memphis stays fresh by being a hub of musical experimentation, producing hybrids such as surf rock with a Memphis twang.

Plus, the Memphis music producer Sam Phillips recorded what is often cited as the first rock ’n’ roll song, “Rocket 88,” at his Sun Records studio when it opened in 1952. Ike Turner wrote the song about a powerful auto, and his band member Jackie Brenston sang it.

Music tourism

Memphis serves up a banquet of musical history and styles. It’s a major part of our tourism appeal as demonstrated at the Memphis Travel website, which tops its “what to do” page with the following iconic music hot spots:

  • Graceland, 3765 Elvis Presley Blvd.
  • Sun Studio, 706 Union Ave.
  • STAX Museum of American Soul Music, 926 East McLemore Ave.
  • Memphis Music Hall of Fame, 126 South Second St.
  • Memphis Rock ’n’ Soul Museum, 191 Beale St.
  • Blues Hall of Fame, 421 South Maine St.
  • Beale Street, which has so many music clubs that it has its own app

Impact of Graceland

Memphis Magazine contributor Chris Davis identifies 1982 as the year that forward-thinking entrepreneurs began shaping our city’s music history as a tourist attraction. In a December 2015 article, Davis noted the tourism renaissance as beginning “when Graceland first opened its doors to the public.”

According to Davis’ article,  Beale Street had lots of boarded-up buildings the year Graceland opened. Sun Records (eventually renamed Sun Studio), where stars like Elvis Presley, Ike Turner, Johnny Cash, B.B. King, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison recorded, was just a quick flash outside the window on Gray Line Tours in the early 1980s, according to Davis’ article.

STAX Museum of American Soul Music is housed in the old STAX Records studio where stars like Booker T. and the M.G.’s, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding (backed by the Bar-Kays), Sam and Dave, and the Staple Singers all recorded.

Nowadays, the city’s musical landmarks hum with visitors. Ted Evanoff of the Commercial Appeal notes that the neon 1950s appeal of Beale Street was Tennessee’s top tourist stop as of 2016 when it attracted six million visitors.

We know all of the things that we are supposed to do in Memphis, but what are the unconventional things to do in the city? You can find plenty to do and see when you make plans to visit Bluff City, but instead of the conventional things to do in Memphis, check out some not-so-conventional activities.

Here are some unconventional places to go in Memphis when you come to visit.

The Ducks of the Peabody Hotel

One of the most unusual things to do in Memphis is to visit the Peabody Hotel to watch the ducks. Ducks at a hotel? Yes, a tradition since 1933, when the first team of ducks, Peabody, Gayoso and Chisca, graced the lobby of the formerly named Memphis Hotel Company. The ducks, one male and four females or hens of the North American mallard type, maintain residency on top of the hotel’s roof in a specially built duck palace. Every day, at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., the ducks make their walk from the roof to the lobby where they can be seen by guests and visitors alike. Fun fact: Although the hotel features a French restaurant, there is absolutely no duck on any Peabody Hotel menu!

See a Pyramid Without Going to Egypt

On your tour of the unconventional things to do in Memphis is a visit to an Egyptian pyramid. You may not be aware but the city of Memphis, TN takes its name from the ancient capital city of Memphis in ancient Egypt. The city was located at the mouth of the Nile river, which seems about right given the present-day city’s location on the Mississippi River. One thing that both cities have in common are pyramids. The Memphis Pyramid, which sits at the mouth of the Mississippi, is home to one of the largest Bass Pro Shops in the U.S. and was known in the past for hosting college and professional sports.

Drinking with the Goats on Beale Street

If you think hanging out with a bunch of pampered ducks is unusual, how about a group of beer-drinking goats in downtown? No, this is not a typo. Silky O’Sullivans, a bar located in downtown Memphis on famous Beale Street, features two female goats. The goats are known to roam the grounds of the bar, in their tower, looking down on bar-goers and occasionally conning a beer or two off an unsuspecting patron. The goats are treated well by Silky himself, who may share a story or two with you on how they came to take up residency at his bar.

Walk on Water at the Mud Island River Park

You can walk across a five-block replica of the lower Mississippi River. The Mud Island River Park is designed to give you the experience of striding, on scale, the entire river area from Cairo, IL to New Orleans, LA. Once you take your journey, learning how the river flows from state to state, you can step into a 1.3 million gallon pool that replicates the Gulf of Mexico. There you can ride paddleboats and enjoy your trip across the mighty Mississippi.

There are many different ways to enjoy Memphis. So, look for these and other fun and unconventional things to do in Memphis!

Are you planning a day trip or extended visit to Memphis, TN? We are excited to have you here, and we want to share a few spots you should experience during your stay. From food to entertainment, here are insider tips on things to do in Memphis:

Find great food and drinks in Memphis

Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken: Your trip to Memphis wouldn’t be complete without a quick stop in this hole-in-the-wall spot that serves up some delicious dishes. The coconut pie, greens and fried green tomatoes are some of the unexpected items you may want to try when visiting. Of course, the fried chicken they are known for should be one of the main things you get.

Restaurant Iris: If you are looking for something on the fancier side, the French cooking here is something you should experience. From surf and turf to sandwiches, every dish is excellent and flavored to perfection. The slow atmosphere of Restaurant Iris is meant to give you a respite during a busy day. So, prepare to slow down and enjoy the fine dining.

Hog and Hominy: In the mood for some seriously delicious Italian + Southern cuisine?  From wood-fired pizzas with creative toppings to mouthwatering pasta dishes, Hog and Hominy’s menu showcases the best of both worlds.

Outdoor exploration and entertainment

Shelby Farms Park: From the drive-thru Christmas light display to the dog park, locals love the Shelby Farms Park, and you will want to stop here too! The paths cross beautiful views, perfect for a jog or walk. A lake provides space for water activities and fun family activities, like horseback riding. An onsite restaurant can make this a great spot for a day trip.

Orpheum: This historic theater is one of our favorites and a place you should visit when you are in Memphis. The stage is beautiful and the sound in this building is excellent. From the orchestra to live theatre, there is a wide variety of shows you can choose from to fit your interests. Watch the Orpheum site to purchase tickets from season ticket holders at a discount!

Educational experiences and history

National Civil Rights Museum: The museum is a reminder of what we’ve gone through as a nation. There is a lot of information here and exhibits covering the mid-twentieth century in America. The moving exhibit is something visitors should take the opportunity to experience, no matter their age or background.

Graceland: Elvis’ home is a glamorous part of the Memphis history that every visitor should experience. The huge entertainment complex is filled with museums, stores, food, presentations and more. Try the fried peanut butter and banana sandwich in the main café and enjoy all the fantastic décor in dramatically decorated rooms. An iPad with headphones will provide you with commentary throughout the guided tour so you can get to know all the sites at Graceland.

Too often, visitors only see a handful of major attractions and miss some of the unique unique places in Memphis. There is plenty to see, do, eat, drink, learn, experience and enjoy in Memphis, but getting off the beaten path is part of the full Memphis experience!

The Crystal Shrine Grotto

Creepy or beautiful? You decide. This man-made grotto was created by a Mexican artist over a period of almost 50 years and depicts the life of Christ. Surrounding the man-made cave is the beautiful 54-acre Memorial Park Gardens.

The River Walk

This five-block-long replication of the Mississippi River is a scaled model you can explore in less than a day. The sculpted area holds over 1.3 million gallons of water, and you can enjoy activities like pedal boat rides or a tour at the museum. Plus, the views here are gorgeous.

Stax Museum

You’ve probably already thought to check out Graceland and Sun Studio, but don’t forget about the museum for American soul music! It contains a rare and impressive collection of over 2,000 artifacts to preserve films, galleries, music, artistry and more. The most impressive item on display might be Isaac Hayes’ custom Cadillac Eldorado, which has a mini-bar, TV and 24-carat gold trim and is lined with white fur carpet.

The Metal Museum

Not the music genre, the art form! This hidden gem in Memphis shows off some very impressive sculpture and exhibits. Look at items created out of metal, everything from knives to jewelry. While you are checking out all of the man-made artifacts, be sure to scope the surrounding views of the bluff where the museum is housed.

Voodoo Café

Find out where this food truck is going to be and make sure you catch it! The truck took first place in the Memphis food truck competition for 2018 and will not disappoint. Many of the locals rave about the coffee (café con leche) and beignets. There are lots of different flavors to try, including Sweet Juju and the Dead Elvis (peanut butter, bananas and bacon).

Beale Street

This eclectic drive is filled with shops, art, cafes, restaurants, bars and so much more. You can spend hours here just exploring the different businesses along the street. Make sure you check out A. Schwab’s — Beale Street’s only remaining original business. It is part museum and part general store and offers locally sourced Memphis merch.

Memphis is well known for barbecue that literally melts in your mouth. The city is home to more than a few barbecue eateries, all of which are competing for the title of best BBQ spot in Memphis. Visit them yourself and let your taste buds be the judge.

Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant

This is the place to come if you want to chow down on barbecue ribs while watching your favorite sport. One of the restaurant’s most popular meals is the half rack of ribs with apple pie and ice cream, although the eatery also has a pork shoulder that’s out of this world as well as a barbecue pasta dish that will hit the spot for fans of Italian food. And to top it off, Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant will even deliver.

Tom’s Barbecue

Whether you’re looking for something light or extremely fulfilling, Tom’s Barbecue is the place to go. The beef and pork sit in a mouthwatering spice rub for a whole day before they’re served, so it’s hardly surprising that the eatery’s three most popular dishes are the pulled pork sandwich, the beef brisket and baby back ribs. The restaurant’s rib tips are smoked over hickory wood and charcoal and then smothered in Tom’s signature sauce, which gives them a unique taste you won’t find anywhere else in the city.

Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous

A classic family establishment with a rich history, Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous is where thousands of people gather on an average Saturday night for racks of smoked ribs and sausages with delicious dry-rub spices. For 70 years the Vergos family has been serving their signature dishes in a basement through a downtown alley across from the Peabody Hotel. And while the world outside has changed considerably, very little has changed in that magical basement.

One & Only BBQ

You’ll enjoy authentic barbecue sandwiches served on fresh buns and smothered in a sweet and spicy sauce at the One & Only BBQ. Pick from a large selection of side options, including green beans, baked beans and sweet potatoes.

A&R Bar-B-Q

A&R Bar-B-Q smokes its meat in pits located on the property, producing pork ribs that literally fall off the bone and can be served smothered in sauce or dry. The chopped pork sandwich and a delicious half-slab of pork ribs are both customer favorites.

Payne’s Bar-B-Que

Dressing up for a fancy dinner can be fun, but sometimes nothing can beat an inexpensive, homey meal. Payne’s Bar-B-Que is the go-to for folks looking for a casual barbecue joint consisting of great food and even better prices. Check out the acclaimed chopped and pulled pork sandwiches as well as the smoked sausage for some house classics at this beloved establishment.

Central BBQ

Central BBQ is known for three things: fall-off-the-bone meat, southern hospitality and good times. Since opening their doors in 2002, Central BBQ has experienced quick growth, expanding to four locations and appearing in several national TV shows and publications including Pitmasters, BBQ with Bobby Flay, USA Today, Southern Living and Men’s Health.

Cozy Corner

Don’t come to Cozy Corner if you’re looking for something quick. Because this BBQ joint is located right in the heart of Memphis, you’re likely to find a line outside the door. But don’t despair—you’ll need that time to peruse the menu, which includes everything from smoked sausage to classic barbecue ribs. We recommend the smoked Cornish hen, which just so happens to be one of the restaurant’s most popular items. The meat is succulent and the entire bird is smothered in a tangy sauce.

Memphis has so much to offer—great restaurants, exciting concert venues, popular museums and more. Come and enjoy all that the city has to offer, and make sure to delight your taste buds with a delicious barbeque dish while you’re in these parts.

Memphis is full of historic landmarks, pavilions, and more. Many of these are still standing and structurally sound after many decades.

The history of Memphis Central Station

Railroads played an important role in the growth of Memphis, which has served as a commercial hub for years.

The railroad transfer in Memphis was a key business transportation advantage among traders who loved the idea of using the train instead of steamboats or road-based transportation. The railroad grew popular during the era of the Civil War, and Memphis eventually became the first railroad junction to connect to Little Rock, Arkansas, which served as a crucial mode of transfer for many.

Grand Central Memphis was opened to the public in 1914. Its original name was changed to Memphis Central Station in 1944, by which point it was serving as a passenger terminal for railroad interstate transfers. Previously owned by the Illinois Central Railroad, the station is a registered passenger terminal of Amtrak and the MATA trolley system at present.

Visiting Memphis Central Station

If you’re interested in checking out this historic railroad station during your Tennessean vacation, you’ll find it on Patterson Boulevard in the Downtown Memphis area. After undergoing a massive makeover in 1998, the Memphis Central Station of today is a completely renovated and restored commercial and passenger hub.

Just a few steps from the Memphis Central Station is the Memphis Railroad and Trolley Museum, where you can spend hours exploring a variety of exhibits and learning more about the history of the railroad in the city. While most parts of the station have been modernized, the freight tunnel nestled some 300 yards beneath the station still looks the same as when it was built in the early 1900s, and visitors can explore this tunnel and its adjacent baggage room with a museum volunteer.

Beyond history, landmarks and museums, the area is also home to Memphis’ oldest eatery, the Greek-inspired Arcade Restaurant that has been serving its patrons since 1919. You can become its latest patron when you sit down for a hearty lunch and enjoy some classic favorites from the menu. Just a few minutes away, the Memphis Farmers Market offers shopping and dining opportunities for guests of all ages.

Next time you visit Memphis, be sure to visit this historic landmark that played a significant role in Memphis’ economic growth.

Below are a few of the best Memphis campgrounds, just waiting to be discovered.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

Inspired by the eponymous cartoon, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is a family campground created to provide outdoor fun for the whole family. Conceived in 1969, these campgrounds feature mascots like Yogi and Boo Boo from the Hannah-Barbera cartoon, and they host dozens of captivating attractions to entertain attendees. With pedal bikes, jump pads, inflatable slides and more, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is a must-see campground for families looking to get away from the city and experience a whirlwind vacation.

Campus^, an Urban Oasis

Originally an Airbnb market experiment, Campus^ is an urban camping experience that mixes outdoor camping with the culture of downtown Memphis.
