With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we thought we’d provide you with a playlist of some of the city’s greatest love songs from both the past and present of Memphis music. Enjoy❤❤❤

Big Star-“Thirteen”

1970’s power pop icons Big Star have their fair share of songs about both love and heartbreak, but none of them resonate quite as strongly as “Thirteen,” a gorgeous ballad dedicated to the magic of adolescent love. The song was listed on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all time and has been covered by everyone from Wilco and Elliot Smith to Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Garbage, proving that it’s a certified classic despite never placing on the charts.

Otis Redding-“These Arms of Mine”

It would be fairly easy to write a top ten list of love songs written by Otis Redding alone, so narrowing it down to just one is a daunting task, but “These Arms of Mine” feels like an appropriate choice for several reasons. First and foremost, its simply an exceptional and timeless ballad that has been a mainstay on wedding playlists for half a century. Secondly, it’s the song that officially introduced Big O to the world,  becoming Redding’s first-released Stax Records single.

KIRBY-“Loved By You”

The self-proclaimed “granddaughter of soul” certainly lives up to her moniker on this neo-retro hit from 2016. The sparse instrumentals lets the singer’s powerful vocals shine, and the sense of yearning is absolutely palpable. A wonderful addition to the long and proud canon of Memphis love songs.

Mark Edgar Stuart-“Remote Control”

While the rest of the songs on this list deal with romantic love, we just had to include this heartfelt beauty from Mark Edgar Stuart about familial love, specifically the type between a son and his father. Stuart has long been considered one of the city’s finest singer-songwriters, and this emotional ode to his late father is a great example of why.

George Jackson-“Talking About The Love I Have For You”

Although George Jackson was an accomplished songwriter best known for penning hits for other artists, his solo work is absolutely worth checking out, particularly the lively love song “Talking About The Love I Have For You.” This infectious ditty gets stuck in my head quite often, and I’m certainly no complaining. In a more just world, this would have been a major hit for the elusive singer.

Jesse Winchester – Sham-A-Ling-Dong-Ding

A song with a title this silly shouldn’t be so powerful, but that’s part of the reason why Jesse Winchester was considered one of the greatest singer-songwriters of his generation. Similar to “Thirteen,” the song is a wonderful ode to young love and remains one of the iconic singer’s most beloved tracks.

Cameron Bethany-“Love is a Bill”

This 2022 neo-soul banger from Cameron Bethany is a confident and slightly cocky love song that is reminiscent of Miguel (in the best way). Sure, it definitely counts as a love song, but Bethany seems to know that he is the real catch in this situation.  The sleek music video fits the song’s sultry vibes perfectly.

Al Green-“Simply Beautiful”

The king of 1970s sultry soul has enough classic love ballads to fill an entire wedding reception, but we’re going just slightly deeper for this pick. A true slow-burner, Green’s “Simply Beautiful” is a masterclass in simmering sanctified soul that never fails to hit me in the feels. As this song illustrates, the good Reverend can out-sing nearly everyone without raising his voice much higher than a whisper.

Bailey Bigger-“No Falling Out of Love”

This country-tinged ballad from Bailey Bigger straddles the line between a love and heartbreak song, an impressive feat from the young singer-songwriter. Americana music is certainly having a moment, and Bailey Bigger is well-positioned to be one of the city’s next big stars, especially if she continues to churn out emotional ballads such as this one.

Elvis Presley-“Can’t Help Falling in Love”

While I will always prefer Elvis’ early rockabilly days on Sun Records to anything else he produced, it’s hard to deny that “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is one of the greatest and most iconic love songs of the past century (as the song’s nearly 1 billion Spotify steams helps to attest). Whether you loathe or love the King, this is truly a timeless classic.

As Martin Luther King Jr. Day approaches, Memphis and beyond reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and contributions to both our city and society as a whole. Our city is a key part of the Civil Rights Movement, with many museums, galleries, and more telling Dr. King’s story plus that of the many Memphians who were at the center of the movement. Here are just five must-visit places around Memphis for a meaningful MLK Day Weekend:

The National Civil Rights Museum
Start your weekend by visiting The National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel. It’s not just a museum; it’s a journey through the history of civil rights in America. Walk through exhibits, watch powerful videos, and see artifacts that tell the story of the fight for equality and Dr. King’s legacy.

Historic Clayborn Temple
While the building is under construction, visitors can still stop outside of Clayborn Temple. Their website states, “because of its reputation in the community and proximity to City Hall, Clayborn was chosen as the organizing headquarters for The Sanitation Workers’ Strike of 1968, Martin Luther King’s last campaign. The campaign’s iconic “I AM A MAN” signs were made daily in Clayborn’s basement and have since become a universal symbol for human rights and dignity.”

I AM A MAN Plaza
Located next to Historic Clayborn Temple, I AM A MAN Plaza features a sculpture made to honor the 1968 Sanitation Workers’ Strike. Boarding the plaza is a marble wall with the names of the 1,300 sanitation workers who participated in the strike with the words “I AM A MAN” reminding us of the bravery of those who fought for their rights and their call for equality.

MLK Reflection Park
Just a short walk away from both Clayborn Temple and I AM A MAN Plaza, the MLK Reflection Park encourages Memphians and visitors alike to take a moment, reflect on Dr. King’s legacy, and continue his work throughout the future.

The Four Way Restaurant
After soaking in history, treat yourself to a meal at The Four Way Restaurant. This spot has been serving up delicious soul food since 1946. Dr. King himself enjoyed meals here and, if you haven’t stopped in yourself, now’s a great time to do so!

As you wander through these spots, take a moment to think about Dr. King’s teachings and the journey toward justice. Memphis has a way of reminding us of the strength of those who fought for what’s right. This MLK Day Weekend, let the city inspire you and renew your commitment to making the dream of equality a reality.

We’ve been bringing you 5 new projects from Memphis artists each month but this month, we decided to switch it up a little. To celebrate the holiday season, we’re highlighting a handful of essential Memphis holiday songs to add to your party playlist. Some are classics, some are brand new but all of them are undoubtedly MEMPHIS. Happy holidays WAMM fam <3

Gloss Up ft. K Carbon, Slimeroni, & Aleza – “25 Days of Christmas”

Yea sure, we’ve all heard of the “Twelve days of Christmas” (borrrring am I right?) so it’s about time someone put out a fresh take on the track. Thank god for our first ladies of hip-hop who cooked up something extra Memphis. “25 Days of Christmas” finds Gloss Up, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Aleza doing what they do best: flawlessly delivering bars about being boss ass bitches. Grab your matching Christmas pajamas and your drink – the party has officially started.

Carla Thomas – “Gee Whiz It’s Christmas”

Is it really the Christmas season without Carla Thomas’ iconic “Gee Whiz It’s Christmas”? The song has all the essential holiday ingredients: cheery, up-tempo production paired with Thomas’ sugary sweet vocals. It’s a seasonal no-brainer, guaranteed to be a favorite across all generations. In fact, if someone *doesn’t* like this song, you might want to double-check your guest list – sounds like the Grinch is at your Christmas dinner.

Swae Lee, Rae Sremmurd & Ear Drummers – “Christmas at Swae’s”

Ok so *technically* Rae Sremmurd are from Tupelo, but for the purpose of this list we’re going to claim them because they put out not 1, but 2 underrated Christmas songs. First up is the piano ballad “Christmas at Swae’s”. It’s a departure from their normally trap-heavy beats and instead features Swae alone on the keys singing about a Christmas love lost. Swae’s melodies are – as usual – on point, further helping to deliver his emotional message. Sure, it’s not the jolliest song, but sometimes we’re in our feelings during the holidays and that’s ok too!

Kendrick P. – “Wish List”

2023 was a huge year for Kendrick P and honestly, 2024 looks like it’ll be even bigger for the Memphis artist. But before he gets ready to close this year out, he gifts us one last musical present in the form of a new Christmas song. “Wish List” is impressively everything we’ve come to know and love from Kendrick: sensual vocals floating over silky smooth synthed out production. With a chorus that goes “Christmas everyday when you’re my baby”, how can you not wanna snuggle up with your special someone and put this track on repeat?

Cheyenne Marrs – “Santa’s Lament”

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Cheyenne Marrs seemed to pop-up with increasing regularity this year, finally convincing me to tune-in and see what all the chatter was about. Well, I’m sure glad I did, and encourage you to follow suit. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I actually was familiar with Cheyenne Marrs through his work with the local band Spacer, but his  debut solo record Everybody Wants To Go Home is what really captured my attention. All of that is to say that Marrs’ recently released a n excellent Christmas tune that is exactly what we would hope for from the burgeoning artist.

Ready or not, the holiday season is now upon us, which means the inescapable sounds of Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey have likely already invaded your headspace, whether you consented or not. That said, not all holiday music is created equally, and there are several awesome options headed our way soon. Here’s a quick guide to the best live music offerings heading to the M Town in the coming weeks that promise to leave you feeling downright festive…

Lucero Family Christmas (Dec. 6 at Minglewood Hall)

The Lucero Family Christmas returns to Minglewood Hall this year, as the hometown alt-country heroes pair up with special guests including Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace (!!!) and hard rocking duo Heels. As many people have learned over the years, Lucero events at Minglewood Hall have a special alchemy that makes them all must-see events.

A BLVD Christmas featuring Anthony Hamilton (Dec. 8 at Mississippi Blvd. Church)

Grammy award winning R&B artist Anthony Hamilton will be joining the BLVD Sanctuary Choir & Orchestra for an evening of soulful holiday vibes at the historic Mississippi Blvd. Church on the edge of Crosstown. I have to admit, it was a bit startling to see Hamilton pop up on a flyer for a local church’s Christmas concert, but I’ll chalk it up to a bit of holiday magic.

Shangri-La Records Holiday Road Show (Dec. 9 at Shangri-La Records)

I can’t think of a better way to get my holiday shopping done than with a killer afternoon of live music soundtracking the experience. On Saturday, Shangri-La will be hosting a holiday sale alongside live performances from Susan Marshall, Steve Selvidge, Jeff Hulett, and J.D. Reager, all of whom will have their own yuletide-themed records for sale. Two birds with one stone!

Goner Presents: A Christmas Rock Show (Dec. 16 at B Side)

Speaking of great local record shops, Goner Records will be rocking the B Side stage with the festive musical stylings from Hartle Road , the Robby Grant Band, and The Sheiks with special guest Bennett. DJs Hot Tub Eric & Zac Ives–Goner’s two dynamic owners– are kicking things off at 7pm, with live music to follow.

Graham Winchester’s Honky Tonk Christmas  (Dec. 22 at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way)

Memphis music mainstay Graham Winchester will be hosting a night of honky tonk at the city’s best rockabilly roadhouse, Hernando’s Hide-A-Way, featuring holiday tunes from Tunstyles, Cheyenne Mars, and more. If you like your Christmas music with just a slight hint of sleaze, then this is the show for you.

Mempho Presents: A Southern Avenue Christmas (Dec. 22 at Minglewood Hall)

Memphis’ very own Southern Avenue will be returning home for an evening of holiday favorites in their signature throw-back soulful sound. The group, which seems to be on an almost endless touring schedule, seems to get better with each subsequent appearance.  I’d bet good money that the band will be at their best for this increasingly-rare hometown throwdown.

Let’s be real…While songs like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Bobby Pickett’s “Monster Mash” are seasonal classics, it’s time to add some new tunes to your Halloween playlist. Thankfully, Memphians have been cranking out some amazing spooky tunes for at least 100 years, which means your options are nearly endless. From Memphis Minnie to Three 6 Mafia, here are 10 of our favorite holiday favorites.

“Haunted Blues”-Memphis Minnie (1936)

Known as “The Queen of the Country Blues,” Memphis Minnie’s expansive catalogue is saturated with tunes about voodoo, ghosts, murder, and other macabre subjects. Given this wealth of options, it was a bit tough to hone in on just one tune, but her 1936 classic “Haunted Blues” about the struggles of living with the ghost of a departed lover is hard to deny.

“I’m Gonna Murder My Baby”-Pat Hare (1954)

While not a household name, Pat Hare was one of the meanest and raunchiest guitarists of his generation, laying down absolutely nasty proto-metal riffs on several tracks for Sun Records. Although he largely acted as a sideman, his 1954 solo effort “I’m Gonna Murder My Baby” showcases his power as a singer as well and is haunting in both its subject matter and delivery. To make things even more unsettling, Hare would go on to be arrested for murdering his wife a few decades later.

“Li’l Red Riding Hood”-Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs (1966)

Best known for their smash novelty hit “Wooly Bully” about a monster with “two big horns and a wooly jaw,” Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs has several other silly and spooky tunes that fit the season perfectly. Our personal favorite is “Li’l Red Riding Hood,” a retelling of the classic fairy tale told from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf. In the years since its release, everyone from Bowling for Soup to The Smashing Pumpkins have covered the holiday favorite.

“Insane Asylum”- Koko Taylor & Willie Dixon (1968)

If we wanted to (and believe us, we were tempted), this entire playlist could have been solely dedicated to the women of Memphis blues, who had an uncanny knack for channeling the darker side of life. Memphian Koko Taylor certainly delivers the goods on this track from her solo debut, which features fellow blues great Willie Dixon. The duet speaks about having a loved one institutionalized in an insane asylum, and the pain is visceral.

“Frankenstein’s Walk”-Gene “Bowlegs” Miller (1969)

During his long and illustrious career,Memphis trumpeter Gene “Bowlegs” Miller worked alongside some of the greatest talents this city has ever produced, including Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Al Green, and Isaac Hayes. Needless to say, his 1969 novelty track “Frankenstein’s Walk” probably doesn’t rank among his finest musical moments, but sometimes you just have to let loose and have some fun. The song features Miller as Frankenstein’s monster, who understandably isn’t the most skilled dancer. Unsurprisingly, the song comes with its own unique dance moves, making it a necessity for any Halloween dance party.

“Haunter of the Darkness”-Zuider Zee (1975)

If I were to ask you which 1970s Memphis power pop band unfairly floundered in obscurity despite coming out with undeniably excellent music, you’d probably respond with “Big Star,” which is certainly true. But Zuider Zee also fits the bill perfectly, as is evident from their darkly infectious track “Haunter of the Darkness.” If you don’t know now you know.

“She’s My Witch”-Tav Falco & Panther Burns (1987)

Much like their contemporaries The Cramps, Tav Falco & Panther Burns excelled in creating a creepy throwback sound that hearkened back to 1950s rockabilly with a dash or two of punk and goth thrown in for good measure. The group’s 1987 track “She’s My Witch” is an excellent example of their signature sound and a perfect tune to play for the special witch in your life.

“Potato Heads from Hell”- Wally Ford (1994)

Like a classic B movie rendered in song form, Wally Ford’s “Potato Heads from Hell” tells the story of an unfortunate man who is attacked by an army of blood-thirsty spuds from the underworld. Believe me, it only gets weirder (and more delightful) from there. I discovered the song several years ago from Mr. Ford himself, who played it to me while we sat next to each other at a bar. Needless to say, I haven’t been able to shake it ever since.

“Anyone Out There?”-Three 6 Mafia (1997)

No Halloween mixtape is complete without a track or two from the kings of horrorcore and this 1997 track finds the group at their bone-chilling best. Featuring a sample from the horror film “Man’s Best Friend,” the song serves as a solo track for Three 6 member Lord Infamous who weaves a horrifying narrative worthy of Edgar Allan Poe. “A family slaughtered by a loved one, forgive scarecrow/I turned against God and everything that I cared for most/Police arrived, candle light, butcher knives, bloody bedposts…” he raps, and that’s just the opening bars.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qS94coaZvj4

“Disco Werewolf”-Clay Otis & the Dream Sheiks (2013)

Prior to his untimely passing, Clay Otis (nee Clay Hardee) released some of the most adventurous and captivating music to come out of Memphis in years. Amongst his best tracks is 2013’s “Disco Werewolf,” an absolute banger that sounds like the sequel to “Thriller” we never got. The song, released on Halloween night of 2013, features some of Memphis’ finest current musicians and promises to be a local Halloween favorite for years to come.

Although Halloween may be considered a children’s holiday by most, we all know that it’s a magical day that is even more enjoyable as an adult. Thankfully, Memphis has several great parties, concerts, and monster mashes headed our way soon. Here are just a few of the spooky music-centric events to circle on your calendar for the next couple of weeks…

All Hallows Grieve at Hi Tone
October 14

Sure, zombies, werewolves, and vampires are always good for a scare, but what’s more horrifying than facing one’s own feelings and emotions? Hi Tone’s recurring emo night is back with a special Halloween edition of the popular dance party, so dust off your skinny jeans, straighten those bangs, and head down for a night of fright and tears.

Ghoultown at Growlers
October 26

What would happen if you somehow had the ability to take a classic horror film and somehow transform it into a band? Texas band Ghoultown seems as close to an answer as we’re likely to get, expertly channeling films like From Dusk till Dawn and Curse of the Undead into an exhilarating live show. With a devilish mix of punk twang, horror rock, and spaghetti-western flair, Ghoultown is the perfect band for a hellacious good time.

Halloween Masquerade Ball at Black Lodge
October 28

Like a Spirit Halloween with liquor and live music, Black Lodge is truly your one-stop-shop for everything Halloween related. The video rental store/venue has always had a fondness for the macabre, but that seems to be ramped up even more this October with a slate of enticing events. Although we encourage you to check out their full list of events– especially the back-to-back Vampire and Witches Masquerade Ball on Friday, Oct. 20th followed the next evening by a Zombie Prom– the main event is the annual Masquerade Ball. Featuring a who’s who of Memphis rockers, this is likely to be the biggest party of the night.

Tone Presents “Black October”
October 28th

Tone, the city’s premiere Black Arts organization (or at the very least, its coolest) is back with another highly-anticipated Halloween event, this year at the Orange Mound Tower. This year’s theme is Vampires in Memphis, so dress accordingly and be ready to dance late into the evening. Oh, and based on last year, the costumes promise to be fierce, so bring your A-game!

Dia de los Muertos Celebration at Memphis Music Room
October 28

Dia de Muertos–the joyous Mexican holiday based on remembering and celebrating friends and family members who have died–has slowly integrated itself into American culture. In fact, there are a handful of Dia de Muertos events happening throughout Memphis this month, but the one we’re most excited for is the Don Ramon Band at the Memphis Music Room. Ramon is one of the city’s premiere Spanish-language acts and he is all but guaranteed to keep things rockin’ into the early morning.

Stevie Nicks at FedEx Forum

October 28

As Fleetwood Mac’s iconic singer Stevie Nicks has made clear many times over the years, she is not actually a witch or a practitioner of the dark arts, yet her mystical and fantastical personae continues to inspire would-be witches and warlocks worldwide. Aside from perhaps Ozzy Osbourne or Alice Cooper, it’s hard to think of a more appropriate classic rock icon to have in town during Halloween weekend. Nicks, of course, is a must-see event regardless of the season, but it’s hard to deny that a late October concert is particularly enticing.

Juneteenth is only days away, and TONE Memphis has put together a weekend full of festivities for Memphis natives (and visitors!) to partake in. TONE Memphis is a culture and arts non-profit organization that works to elevate the city’s culture. With their many efforts to highlight Memphis art, they are a powerful player within the city’s Black arts scene. “People always say you have to choose one artistry and that’s what I struggled with a lot as an artist. Choosing my artistry. For me, TONE makes me feel like I can do it all.” says creative The Goddessie. This time they are elevating the culture through their third annual Juneteenth Family Reunion Celebration! The celebration is set to begin on June 15th and close out on the 18th. Yes, that is four full days of activities, fun, and connecting with people that harbor just as much talent, beauty, and Memphis sauce as you mane!

Here is a quick guide about what to expect for the week’s festivities:

July 15th

The series of events will begin on Thursday at 7 PM  with a movie screening of the popular 1997 film, B.A.P.S. Attendees are to wear B.A.P.S-themed and 90’s attire and come with the same energy as the cast members of the movie.  At the midtown Malco Studios Theatre, TONE expects to see long nails, expressive clothing, and updos similar to BAPS’ stars, Nisi and Mickey. You can get your tickets here!

July 16th

Everyone knows that a family reunion is not a family reunion without a round or two of spades! As you may know, playing a game of spades is a favorite activity in the Black community, and it’s only right to celebrate the occasion by showing off your skills! Not only will Tone be hosting a broad selection of games, light food, drinks, and deejays at the party at their Orange Mound gallery, but there is a $200 prize involved as well! So be sure to show up and compete for the money AND the bragging rights! To play, sign up here!

July 17th

Saturday will be the city’s chance to be themselves and show up B.A.P.S and Bridgerton, Gala style! TONE Memphis released amazing visual marketing videos stating that they wanted to see Memphians in grillz and their best gala attire for a night of fashion, music, and plenty of drinks. The June 17 gala begins at 6:30 p.m., and the after-party starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until midnight. The gala and after-party tickets range from $50-$150.

July 18th

Last, but not least, what everybody is waiting for is the Juneteenth Music Festival! Music is our city’s most prized possession, and everyone knows that a city celebration isn’t a celebration for us unless it involves music. With that being said, the festival’s lineup will include some of the city’s best acts such as Memphis Legend, Project Pat, Duke Deuce, and Grammy-nominated producer Hitkidd. Other Memphis creatives on the lineup include Mafia 9, Idi X Teco, Talibah Safiya, The Goddessie, Ashley Ave, and more. This festival will also be a step toward new Memphis history as it will be held in the Orange Mound Tower. While many know that Orange Mound was the first black neighborhood built by black people, a few of Memphis’ greatest creatives came together to make one of its most important landmarks much more than what it once was. TONE’s Co-Founder, Victoria Jones, partnered with Unapologetic’s owner, IMAKEMADBEATS, to get The Orange Mound tower back up and running. The two have plans of making the grand area a space for Black entrepreneurs and creatives to do what they do best. This year’s Tone Juneteenth festival will be the city’s first introduction to the new space and has already drawn a number of natives’ attention.

With that being said, lots of history is being made in the midst of all the fun and you don’t want to miss out on the city’s biggest Juneteenth weekend.

We hope you got your tickets and we hope to see you there!

Believe it or not, December is here and a new year is on the horizon. Before we welcome 2023, though, there are lot’s of great live music options in the coming weeks, including several notable holiday shows. Here are 5 to circle on your calendar!

Kenneth Whalum Experience 2.0: Home For The Holidays

December 23rd, 8:15 PM & 10:15 PM

Tailor’s Union/ The Pocket

$40

We caught up with Kenneth Whalum this past summer for this interview exploring his successful career as a top Saxophonist, and latest projects as a contemporary soul and R&B artist and composer. By the way, since that interview, Whalum announced his work and accolades on Beyonce’s latest album (Yes, we said Beyonce). Anyway, because we rarely get a performance from Whalum in his hometown, I expect this show to be very intentional. Whalum’s emotional, sometimes sweetly melancholy style of vocals lend themselves well to the holiday vibe, and Tailor’s Union provides a perfectly cozy place for it. All of that makes this show my #1 pick for December. Tickets with seating are $40 and are available on Tailor’s Union website- and you have two show times to pick from. Have high expectations, expect untraditional holiday, and expect some of the best musicians in the city.

Pentatonix: A Christmas Spectacular

December 10th, 7:00 PM

FedExForum

$25 – $150

We are witnessing peak acapella groups, and Pentatonix are on top of the genre. The five piece group known for their acapella harmonies, beatboxing, and pop music style song arrangements of every genre are bringing their arena Christmas show to FedEXForum this year. Since they won 2011’s season of NBC’sThe Sing Off, Pentatonix has become a household name embarking on several world tours, three Christmas tours, and winning three Grammy Awards. Pentatonix’ stage show is backed by state of the art light show, and production to enhance your holiday warm and fuzzies. This one is a must to get in the spirit of the season, start your own acapella group, or go caroling. At the very least, you should be inspired to wear your favorite holiday sweater and be merry. See you then!

Ho Ho Ho Show w/ Reba Russell & Susan Marshall

December 16th, 7:00 PM

Hernando’s Hideaway

$20

This show’s description says to expect “sincerely sweet to bawdy and naughty, and EVERYTHING in between”.,, and we’re in! non-traditional is on brand for Hernando’s Hideaway, a venue that hosts everything from neo traditionalist country bands, to top notch soul and R&B songwriter and artist collaborations, to something called “Chicken Sh#@t Bingo”. But, if Susan Marshall’s 2018 Christmas release, Decorations of Red, is any indication of this show– it’ll be a hit! Reba Russell & Marshall are both cornerstone’s of the Memphis vocalist and songwriter community and I, for one, cannot wait to see how they mix up this Ho Ho Ho Show to let a little steam off nine days before Christmas.

Drew & Ellie Holcomb’s Neighborly Christmas

December 21st, 7:30 PM

The Orpheum Theatre

$36 – $90

Drew & Ellie Holcomb might be Memphis’ favorite Americana-ish couple/duo. A Memphis native, Drew and his wife Ellie have been making music as part of Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors for over a decade. Since Ellie’s solo career as a Christian music singer-songwriter has bloomed, this is a rare chance to see her back on stage with The Neighbor’s and what better time for a family reunion than Christmas? Expect family friendly classy-hipster Christmas vibes, fun stage banter, and some pretty lovely music.

Mannheim Steamroller Christmas by Chip Davis

December 29th, 7:30 PM

The Orpheum Theatre

$45 – $95

Chris Davis, Mannheim Steamroller’s founder, is a composer, songwriter, and percussionist who has been making hits for over 50 years with his various projects such as Fresh Aire– self described as “18th Century classical rock”, collaborations that won him unlikely accolades in the country music genre, spoken word projects, and more. But it is Davis’ Mannheim Steamroller Christmas project that most know him best. In 1984 Mannheim Steamroller released a successful record simply called Christmas which by 2004 had sold six MILLION copies. Fifteen Christmas themed records later Mannheim is as recognizable, and highly associated with the holidays as Bing Crosby or Mariah Carey. By the time Chris Davis brings Mannheim to Memphis, much of the pressure of the holidays is over– which will make this show that much more enjoyable!

After years of talking about Juneteenth, last year, President Joe Biden signed a bill into law on June 17, 2021, recognizing Juneteenth as an official federal holiday after the House passed legislation that establishes June 19th as Juneteenth National Independence Day.

Juneteenth celebrates the commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. It is a day, a week, and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family gatherings. It is a time for reflection and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement and for planning the future.

With cookouts, festivals, concerts, exhibits and more it’s a celebration for all to celebrate and learn more about why Juneteenth is so special. The holiday is quickly approaching and here are a couple of events you can add to your calendar and ways to commemorate the day.

Sunday is Tribute & Honors Day. An art auction begins at 2pm, followed by a Flag Raising Ceremony and Allen Conner’s – Father’s Day Tribute at 6pm.

The funeral service industry has long been a male-dominated one, but times are changing as more women are entering into the profession and breaking down stereotypes. While still not yet considered female-dominated, the fresh infusion of death-positive philosophy, life celebration, and death doulaship by women is changing the face of the death industry. Shifting values, technology, and optics have created a disruption — and women are at the forefront.

As the licensed funeral director and embalmer at R.S. Lewis and Sons Funeral Home for almost 9 years and the youngest at her firm, we were excited to sit down with Ternisha Smith to get her thoughts on how women are disrupting the funeral industry.

What made you go into the funeral service industry?

In 2005, my freshman year of high school at Whitehaven High, my aunt passed away unexpectedly and during her first viewing with the family I didn’t like the way she looked. She was a small/medium built lady; however, in that casket she was HUGE! She didn’t look like herself at all. I made up my mind that funeral service was the field for me. Human anatomy has always been intriguing to me; therefore, I knew my calling/dream and what I had to do to make it my reality.

What is an average day to day working as a licensing manager at RS Lewis & Sons Funeral Home?

As the licensed funeral director and embalmer, I’m tasked with responding to first calls, making funeral arrangements with families, scheduling funeral services, both traditional (burials) and non-traditional (cremation), preparing the remains for services, ensuring the daily operations of the firm are completed and in compliance with the state board.

How do you maintain your peace having to care for so many grieving families?

Prayer, I grew up in the church and was always taught to keep God first. I take my weekly scheduled off days to rejuvenate and decompress; take a trip to the spa, get my nails done, impromptu trips to the Children’s Museum with my children, day-date with my husband or day of doing nothing.

Why do you think the funeral industry has become more women leading in the last few years?

In my opinion, women are more compassionate, detail oriented, attentive to detail, and organized. We naturally have a nurturing spirit. Historically, it is known that women were the ones who cared for the family – both the deceased, and the survivors. It’s not that we do it better than men, or men can’t do it, but for it to be such a male-dominated industry, we are coming in and literally taking over. We can do everything a man can do from removals, lifting, embalming, dressing, casketing, etc. Intellectually, women have a higher altitude when it comes to taking the national or state board. Back in 2011 when I graduated from John A. Gupton College, there were approximately 46 people in my graduating class with 22 being women. The numbers are steadily increasing each year.

What is the most rewarding thing about your job?

The most rewarding thing about my job is the thanks that I receive at the end

of a service. Knowing that I have made the worst moment in a families’ life easier is good enough for me. I don’t do this for recognition, I do this because it’s my passion and I absolutely love what I do. In addition, when someone calls looking for “the funeral director” and I explain that they are speaking to HER, there is a brief awkward silence that tickles me, especially in the older generations. The awe in their eyes when I’m seen in person is just as hilarious. It’s the “ooh, you’re Ternisha, I’ve heard so much about you” for me; even a lot of my fellow colleagues know me by name, but haven’t seen me in person. People have this conception that a funeral director or mortician is an older man, tall and speaks monotone, to their surprise, I’m the complete opposite. I’m 5’4, female and speak enthusiastically. I’m the youngest at my firm and I take pride in knowing that I can perform just as well as the oldest person.

What are you most passionate about in the funeral service industry?

I’m most passionate about helping people. Whether their funeral is $3,000 or $30,000, I give the same level of compassion and professionalism. I love the bond that is built with the families. A family will always remember how you treated them and how you made them feel throughout the process.

What has your profession taught you about life?

Funeral service has taught me that death has no limits. You can be old, young, rich, or poor. Death is inevitable. Most importantly, have insurance. The most irresponsible thing a person can do is put the burden of having someone plans a funeral for you with no money or insurance. Insurance is everything. Having your affairs in order will make the process easier for your loved ones. Inform your loved ones of what you want for your service, from casket color to the style of dressing, make it plain and clear.

While Thanksgiving in Memphis has many things in its favor (reuniting with friends and family,  throwing dietary concerns to the wind, drinking wine at noon), it also comes with plenty of headaches, such as a grueling cooking schedule and even more burdensome after-meal cleaning. With that in mind, there are plenty of Memphis food options and fantastic restaurants who are willing to do the dirty work for you.

So whether you’re looking for comfort food or something a little fancier, here are seven of our favorite local restaurants that you can rely on this holiday season, leaving you more time to focus on the things that really matter (like arguing with your drunk uncle about canned versus homemade cranberry sauce).

*Be warned – you’ll need to plan ahead, so be sure to check out each restaurant’s deadline for reservations or placing pick-up orders.

Bishop
545 S. Main St. (Inside Central Station)

If you’re a foodie residing in Memphis, it’s almost inevitable that you’ve eaten at one of Andy Ticer and Michael Hudman’s many excellent restaurants. Their newest venture, a trendy French Brasserie called Bishop residing inside Central Station, proves once again that this culinary duo might just be the Bluff City’s most talented restaurateurs.

This year, Bishop will be open on Thanksgiving day!

Capriccio Grill
149 Union Ave. (Inside The Peabody)

Known as one of the finest steakhouses in Memphis, the Capriccio Grill at the Peabody will be serving a special three-course meal between noon and 10pm on Thanksgiving day.

Prefer a nice, medium rare steak over turkey? They’ve got a filet mignon with lobster mornay sauce on the menu that’s to die for. From its warm and elegant dining room outfitted to host everything from intimate gatherings to a large Thanksgiving feast, let the Capriccio Grill be your home away from home this holiday season.

 The Complicated Pilgrim
21 S. Cooper Street (Inside The Memphian)

If we were basing our Thanksgiving meal location on name alone, then it would be hard to find a more fitting restaurant than The Complicated Pilgrim, the beautiful and inviting restaurant located in Midtown’s The Memphian hotel.

The restaurant will be offering a specialty four course meal from noon to 8pm on Thanksgiving Day. With scrumptious fare ranging from lemon braised chicken thighs to red velvet cheesecake, there’s nothing complicated about a holiday feast at the Complicated Pilgrim.

Felicia Suzanne’s
Main Street, between Monroe & Madison Ave.

Few restaurants are able to blend Southern comfort food with fine dining better than long-time Memphis restaurant staple Felicia Suzanne’s, which makes this local eatery an ideal source for an elegant yet familiar Thanksgiving dinner.

Their annual “Operation Turkey Day” menu is back yet again, featuring delectable twists on traditional favorites such as gulf oyster dressing and deviled eggs topped with salmon, caviar and bacon.

NOTE: Felicia Suzanne’s has temporarily closed their restaurant and will be re-opening their brand new location at 383 South Main Street in 2023!

Paulette’s
50 Harbor Town Square

For nearly 50 years, Paulette’s has been one of the most celebrated fine dining restaurants in Memphis, garnering a stellar reputation for their service, food, and atmosphere.

If you’re feeling a bit bougie this year, then head to Harbor Town and treat yourself to a three-course meal that includes uniquely delicious options such as lobster bisque, filet mignon, fresh baked pumpkin pie, or the tried-and-true turkey and dressing that’s hearty enough to round out any holiday dinner with family and friends.

Once gathered together in their classically Southern dining room and indulging in the beautifully presented entrees coupled with an impressive selection of fine wines, Paulette’s will quickly become your new home for the holidays.

Muddy’s Bake Shop
2497 Broad Ave.

It’s easy to think about Thanksgiving and immediately taste the turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, before you’ve even unfolded your napkin. But no Thanksgiving is truly complete until the dessert hits the table, and that’s where Muddy’s Bake Shop officially takes the cake.

Just get in close proximity to this old school, neighborhood bakery, and you’ll begin to sense the sweet and sugary aromas in the air. One step through the door and you’ll be elated by the sight of their always fresh, always made from scratch, homestyle southern classics.

Whether your gathering is in need of cookies, cakes, pies, or cupcakes, all of their soulful Memphis treats are made from high quality, locally sourced ingredients. Every delicious morsel is an explosion of flavor, guaranteed to liven up your Thanksgiving feast.

Memphis Toddy – Old Dominick Distillery
305 S. Front St.

Take a journey deep into the history of Memphis food and drink heritage, with a quick stop or a curated tour of the Old Dominick Distillery.

Just steps away from their original building, the now state-of-the-art facility and classic Memphis bar is steeped in the brand’s 150-year-old story. You’ll experience firsthand the dedication and passion this iconic Memphis distillery pours into every bottle.

Whether you’re looking to pick up a few local spirits for your Thanksgiving dinner or gather with friends and family to enjoy the sensory-infused tour and curated tasting experience, your time at the elevated, yet relaxed atmosphere will make for an unforgettable holiday excursion.

Riko’s Kickin’ Chickin
1329 Madison Avenue

What started back in 2014 as a flourishing Memphis food truck, Riko’s Kickin Chickin now a popular local eatery built on a love story so delicious you can taste it in every bite.

Known for its fiery sauces and uniquely Southern menu, this downtown Memphis hotspot has been kickin’ it big-time for years, thanks to a husband and wife duo so dedicated to perfection that they still hand-check every dish before it ever leaves the kitchen.

Stop in daily for some of the city’s best seasoned wings, available in flavors like Honey Garlic, BBQ, Lemon Pepper, and Jamaican Jerk. For a real Thanksgiving treat, you can’t go wrong with their one-of-a-kind Honey Gold Deep Fried Turkey.

Get your order in now, because you don’t want to miss this flavorful new take on a holiday classic!

Christmas may be the most wonderful time of the year for many red-blooded Americans, but, for the rest of us, it’s Halloween that has us shivering in otherworldly joy. As the weather cools and the leaves tumble down, as skies go gray and the rich smell of burning fields begins to curl through our streets, we know that everything spectral and witchy will soon be upon us. So while you’re throwing together your creepiest costume and stocking up on candy corn, consider hitting up one of several fine musical events gracing Memphis venues around the spookiest day of the year.

ZARR Halloween w/ Jack Oblivion, Static Static, Off Peak Arson
10 p.m., Saturday October 30, B-SIDE Memphis
$10 at the door

It’s time for the annual ZARR Halloween celebration, and this year’s festivities offer up a bumper crop of frenetic sonic fury. Headliner Jack Oblivian is a local garage-punk legend who shows no signs of hitting the brakes on his careening musical momentum anytime soon, and his slyly anthemic hooks and ramshackle splendor are truly wondrous to behold in person. Joining this stacked bill are fellow Memphians Off Peak Arson and touring NOLA post-punkers Static Static. With their shout-along vocals and kinetic unpredictability, the thrilling Off Peak Arson calls to mind a scuzzier, sleazier White Lung (this is definitely a compliment). And somewhat of an outlier (but no less welcome for it), Static Static bring snarling, noise-damaged synth pop to the table. Come on over to B-SIDE, and don’t forget your costume for the contest, as well!

School Of Rock Halloween
2 p.m., Saturday October 30, Lafayette’s Music Room
Free

If you fancy an afternoon outing of the musical persuasion Saturday, you might want to look into Lafayette’s, where The Memphis School Of Rock is hosting what’s sure to be a stellar Samhain shindig. With the School’s hard-working house house band performing, you’ll surely be be captivated by the heights of youthful skill on display. Their exceedingly-talented instructors will also perform, and yes, there’s a costume policy in effect with said costumes ‘strongly encouraged’. Why not dress up a little and be outrageous for your Halloween midday? After all, the event page claims there’ll be prizes and SoR swag for the winners. Watching brilliant young players grow into their craft in real-time is blessing enough, but the early start and finish time leave more than

space for ensuing one’s grown-up evening plans. These performances will stay with you for days.

Tommy Wright III, Gangsta Boo, Lukah, Lavendear, Terminal Nation
9 p.m., Saturday October 30, Black Lodge
$25 TICKETS

Call it Mischief Night, Devil’s Night, or (as I heard growing up in New England) Cabbage Night, the fact remains that October 30th is all about decadent trickery and dark, secretive pleasures. Presented by Bad Timing, Black Lodge celebrates Devil’s Night 2021 with an all-star trio that features two Memphis hip-hop/horrorcore pioneers, and preceded earlier in the evening by the ragged-glory, post-hardcore speed run of Lavendear and the soul-erasing death metal/hardcore juggernaut of Little Rock’s Terminal Nation. When else would underground Memphis rap monoliths like our headliners materialize than on All Hallows Eve? Tommy Wright III is a towering influence and a walking history of underground Memphis hip-hop, while Gangsta Boo stomped down barriers as the first female member of Three 6 Mafia. Skilled South African upstart Lurah is on-hand to represent where hip-hop might go next, while also symbolically nodding to where its been. All these atmospheric, eerie beats and this vivid, intricate wordplay are ideal chasers to a night that sets sail with the unholy terror and rage of Terminal Nation, with Lavendear providing game an essential mid-bill come down before the rampaging main event.. Don’t miss this one.

Mudhole, Burn The Witch, Cult Of The Flag, Defy
7 p.m., Saturday October 30, Growler’s
$10 TICKETS

Every Halloween show season needs a metal show, right? That’s just good horse sense. And thankfully, there’s one metal show to rule them all this Saturday at Growler’s, kicking the holiday off nicely with the southern-fried Memphis groove metal of Mudhole. Fellow Memphians Cult Of The Flag offer their own requisite, brutal boneshaking, and possibly some larynx shredding, while the third Memphis band on the bill, Defy, fold in haunting, spectral sound pieces and field recordings to collage a genuine unease coursing beneath their doomy thunderheads, all tension and dread-soaked tumult. Last but definitely not least, Burn The Witch (from, you guessed it, Memphis) aim mightily for sludge-metal gold, all feral catharsis and riff-oozing guitars. Four awesome local bands for just ten bucks? Yes, please. And once again, there’s a costume party being held for this gathering as well, so do prepare accordingly!

Beginning in the early 1990s, Memphis has been at the epicenter of a subgenre now commonly known as “horrorcore,” a downright terrifying brand of hip-hop that is marked by its lo-fi sound, wickedly profane lyrics, triple time flows, and samples pulled directly from horror movie scores. From that crop of early horrorcore pioneers, few were as masterful and influential as Tommy Wright III and Gangsta Boo, both of whom will be performing on Saturday night at Black Lodge’s “Devil Night” alongside rising rap star Lukah, death metal band Terminal Nation, and raucous rockers Lavendear.

“The Trap Godfather” Tommy Wright III took some time out to speak with us about Saturday’s show, the enduring legacy of Memphis horrorcore, and what he’s got planned next.

“First off, let me introduce myself to folks who may not know me. I’ve been called a major contributor to crunk music, an innovator of trap music, and a pioneer of the Memphis sound. I’m somebody that did a whole lot with nothing, and eventually took it from the streets of Memphis to all over the world. Along with a lot of other people, I helped to create a sound that is really influencing some of the most popular music going today. People may not know this, but a lot of the big artists today are reaching out to us O.G.s and asking us to contribute verses, production, or samples. It’s crazy.

I’ll be honest…I still kinda feel like I’m on this pandemic vacation, but I’m looking at this Halloween show coming up at Black Lodge like a bootcamp to help me get back in the swing of things. The last show I played was in February of 2020 in Baltimore. It really looked like that was going to be an action packed year for me- I had plans to tour with Post Malone, there was a show booked in Barcelona, and then boom. You know the rest.

That said, I’m looking forward to getting things going again starting with Saturday night. I see this show as a continuation of a Halloween tradition that me and the guys at Black Lodge started a couple of years ago when I played one of their first shows at the new location on Halloween night. The difference between then and this year is that we’ve added some more fire power by bringing in another Memphis legend in Gangsta Boo. We’ll also be rocking with one of the hottest new lyricists on the scene, Big Lukah, along with a couple of hot new bands in Terminal Nation and Lavendear. I really think this could kick off something special that we can run back every year.

This will actually be Tommy and Gangsta Boo part two. We got paired up for a Pabst Blue Ribbon party in Atlanta several years ago, which was huge. It gave us a chance to really connect, because before that we had really only kicked it once or twice. Our histories obviously overlap a lot and I think we both were pioneers in the Memphis rap game, so I can’t wait to rock with her again. I think we make a good combination and we’ve discussed touring and working together more after this show, so fingers crossed.

In terms of what’s next, I just made a booking for L.A. for a project with Adidas. Adidas is basically about to start a new campaign focused on the Memphis influence we’ve been talking about. They’ve got gangster walkers, DJ Spanish Fly, and several others on board. I think that shows how heavy that influence still is. Our sound just stands the test of time.”

“Bad Timing Presents: Devil’s Night at Black Lodge” kicks off at 8 PM on Saturday October 30th.

From family-friendly fun to more adult-oriented activities, this October has something for everyone looking to partake in some spooky season shenanigans. In fact, there are so many great options in the Bluff City over the next few weeks that we had to whittle our list down to just 10 of the most essential events. So put your costume together (You went with Squid Game? How original!) and start circling dates on your calendar now, because Halloween is officially back baby!

The Mid-South Maze at the Agricenter
Ongoing until Oct. 31

Few annual events are as beloved as the Mid South Maze, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The 10-acre corn maze, which features a Memphis skyline design, is wholesome family fun for the most part, but during Friday and Saturday’s after 7PM things get a bit creepier with their popular haunted maze nights.

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Zoo Boo
Oct. 15-17, 22-24, 28-31

Every year around this time, the Memphis Zoo transforms into an impressive homage to everything Halloween, with an abundance of special programming appropriate for kids of all ages. From various trick-or-treat stations to the jack-o-lantern jamboree to free rides for kids, this is truly one of the city’s premier holiday events, especially for families with children.

Creepville Market at the Lamplighter Lounge
October 16

While this year’s Monster Market will be held completely online this year, folks who prefer to shop for their spooky wares in person should check out the Creepville Market between 1-6PM at the Lamplighter Lounge. The market will include a wide selection of goods from local makers, including art, clothing, and more. You can check out a complete list of vendors on their Instagram at @creepvillemarket

Day of the Dead at Crosstown Concourse
October 16

As you probably know, Día de Muertos is a Mexican holiday held on November 1st and 2nd when families gather to honor the memory of deceased loved ones. Crosstown Concourse, in partnership with Cazateatro, will be celebrating the holiday a couple of weeks early in the central atrium with a free event featuring music, folklore, dancers, altars, and crafts. In addition, a free screening of the Pixar film “Coco” will be showing in the Crosstown Theater at 2PM.

Shoktoberfest at Black Lodge
October 24

If one Memphis institution truly understands the unique allure of Halloween, the it would have to be Black Lodge, the unique Crosstown business that combines an old school video rental store with a live venue space. Black Lodge will be hosting events throughout the month, but we’re especially excited about Shoktoberfest, their “queer music and variety show” that is being put together in conjunction with Barbie Wyre. The event will feature a costume contest, live music, drag performances, film screenings, and much more.

Fright Night at the Brewery at Memphis Made
October 28

Boos meet brews at this year’s Fright Night at Memphis Made Brewing Co., a Halloween-themed fundraiser for United Housing Inc. In addition to helping a good cause, you’ll also be able to participate in a costume contest while drinking some of the finest beer in the 901. Tickets begin at $25 and include one drink, (beer or wine) and one meal from the food truck.

Blast Habit Halloween at Bar DKDC
October 29

On the Friday before Halloween, Blast Habit Records will be taking over Bar DKDC for an evening of scary good music and burlesque. The power trio So Gung Ho will be performing alongside Alicja Trout and dancer Velvetina Taylor for a rocking night that promises to roll deep into the dark night. Costumes are, of course, highly encouraged.

Heady Halloween at 831 S. Cooper
October 30

We’ve already discussed Black Lodge’s many events this month, but something is also brewing at their newly renovated former home on Cooper St. Heady Halloween promises to be one of the grooviest events in town on Halloween weekend with a costume contest and late night jams from Shorty & the Grooves & Grape.

Time Warp Drive-In
October 30

Time Warp, the monthly curated series of classic, strange, and cult films at the Summer Ave. Drive In, is back this month with “American Nightmares: The Teen Horror Cinema of Wes Craven.” The Halloween-themed movie marathon will include screenings of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Scream,” “The People Under the Stairs,” and “The Hills Have Eyes.”

After Hours Tour at Elmwood Cemetery
October 31

Elmwood is one of the state’s most storied and historically significant cemeteries, providing the final resting place for “mayors, governors, madams, blues singers, suffragists, martyrs, generals, civil rights leaders, holy men and women, outlaws and millionaires.” On Halloween night, they will be opening their gates to the public for an after hours tour that will walk you through the history of the grounds and highlight some of the most notable figures buried there. Scares AND a little history lesson? Sounds like a win-win to us.

Miles Thomas always knew there was something special about him. A creative, he admires the genius of Kanye West and Chance The Rapper, but not just for their lyrics and production, but their involvement in multiple venues.

After transferring back home to Memphis from Belmont, Miles knew he had some work to do here in his hometown and soon created Corner Store Market, an online boutique cultural hipster hub where he sells his designs on t-shirts for the everyday urban hipster. Now, with his designs reaching influencers such as PJ Morton and Kenneth Whalum, III, Miles is in his bag and his joy illuminates throughout his brand.

When you think of the phrase “Black joy,” what does that mean to you? How do you look for moments of joy in your daily life?

Black Joy to me is finding joy in your identity and who you were divinely created to be. It’s being happy about the skin that everyone else sees everyday, a skin that has been led to believe it ain’t beautiful at all. Finding the beauty in who we are uniquely made to be and not hiding it from the world, that’s black joy.

Thinking about the community around you, how do they give you joy or help you pursue your own?

The community around me, especially in the city, has shown me the beauty in being authentic. Not forcing or trying to fit a circle into a square hole, but letting others conform to whoever you are. Being ok with where you come from, how you talk, the little things that make you whoever you are. Being able to tell the difference in everyone from the city, there’s beauty in that, because it forces you to have to be ok with who you are. We can sense fake, and you’ll be isolated more with fake way more than you will ever be with authenticity, especially in Memphis.

Think about the thing, people, or Memphis-related place that brings you the most joy or allows you to be who you are. How does that thing, person, or place do that for you?

I think it’s the FedexForum specifically the Grizzlies games that you can really see people be whoever they are. That’s when you see the city, and I mean you really see the city come out. It brings me peace despite all the stress that goes into watching a Grizzlies game. You can be whoever you are, it’s no force to be cool, or to be fit in. You’re sitting there rooting for the team that represents you. However you wanna dress at the game, however you want to talk, act, it’s cool, because we are all there for one common goal, rooting on the team who represents us. That to me brings me peace because it shows a lot about us as a city, it doesn’t really matter who it is, we might have idsues within each other, or we might be going through whatever within the city, but when it’s time to root for and encourage someone who’s representative of us, we will be there.

How does Memphis (think the city, the community, the places here that you find the most peace) allow you to express yourself?

Honestly, it’s crazy to look back and see how much Memphis has influenced my art. When I design a tee shirt, I think about Memphis first, and how the style of the hustlers who live in Whitehaven or the style of the suburban kid in Germantown, how those can coexist at the same time, how they could both be touched by my expression. Some of the ways I express myself, only people who are from Memphis would understand the little details and that’s cool. I never would have made some of the t shirts I have without seeing the authenticity of Memphis showing me that whoever I am or however I am feeling, that’s what has to go into the world.

For the younger Black generations, what is your greatest piece of advice for living unapologetically or pursuing passions or joy?

Life is long. The more you apologize for whoever you are, the more you let people tell you what your passion and individual joy should be, the more you let people shape that, the longer life feels and the longer life gets. You have to find your own joy and your own passions, that’s accomplished through trial and error, it’s not dependent on someone else’s expectations. Expectations kill relationships, so those relationships will naturally die in due time. However you can’t sacrifice yourself in order to save relationships. Removing those expectations will help you find joy and passion in a way that’s unimaginable.

In celebration of Juneteenth, We Are Memphis is focusing on sharing stories from our Black community. While the holiday commemorates freedom, for so many Black Memphians (and Black communities across the country), it’s about so much more! With the many stories and perspectives to share, we’ve sat down with the city’s favorite creatives, influencers, civic leaders, and more to highlight their stories of freedom of expression, joy, and living unapologetically.

Carl Bledsoe Jr.

When you think of the phrase “Black joy,” what does that mean to you? How do you look for moments of joy in your daily life?

To me, the phrase “Black joy” means strength & healing. The strength of a laugh is in Dick Gregory, is in Monsters Inc., is in a child. You heard “laughter is the best medicine,” right? When do people need medicine? I don’t look for moments of joy in my daily life: they just happen & I see them & I’m thankful. I have a great life, and I’m constantly thanking GOD & my ancestors: this keeps me grounded…not “humbled,” but grounded. I smile at life.

Thinking about the community around you, how do they give you joy or help you pursue your own?

My loved ones are my community. They give me joy by being themselves: striving for their dreams unapologetically & fiercely. People like Carisa & Kara Bledsoe, Noah Stewart, @shotontheblock, and Jordan Dodson, @jordanoccasionally, inspire me. The city of Memphis, of course, is in there, too. My city brings me joy through its story: the necessary past, progressive present, and brilliant future.

Think about the thing, people, or Memphis-related place that brings you the most joy or allows you to be who you are. How does that thing, person, or place do that for you?

My joy stems from courageous roots. Nothing & no one “allows” me to be who I am. Only I have that power here. Places like the National Civil Rights Museum, Robert R. Church Park, and Clayborn Temple encourage me. I see what my people accomplished in yesterday’s America and am motivated to persist & excel. Dr. Maya Angelou says that Courage is paramount: one must have the courage to love, to speak up, to trust, etc. This is Memphis.

How does Memphis (think the city, the community, the places here that you find the most peace) allow you to express yourself?

I feel like nothing “allows” me 2 express myself. I control that. Memphis is full of people who just… create. We just hella creative here: expressive. Always have been. Being around that energy affects you, whether you’re cognizant of it or not. I walk along Beale St & think of the gruesome lynchings as well as the ingenious artists who’ve shared this space: opportunists. Memphians create opportunities. I’m thankful for Launch Memphis for working with me as a photographer; I’m thankful for Raphael Baker, City Gear, and the Metal Museum for working with me as a model; I’m thankful for The University of Memphis for working with me as a student! Memphis was and is for creatives: our canvases are tangible, audible, scrollable, and soulful.

For the younger Black generations, what is your greatest piece of advice for living unapologetically or pursuing passions or joy?

Don’t wait for other people to be “ok” with who you are. Just go 4 it, and see what happens. If you’re doing what you’re supposed to be doing, you’ll know. GOD timing is inescapable, but not fighting it is a choice. See multiple angles. Don’t be limited by other people’s experiences: your story is specific. Love 💙 & follow @CarlBledsoeJr 😁✌🏾

Sarai Payne

When you think of the phrase “Black joy,” what does that mean to you? How do you look for moments of joy in your daily life?

“Black Joy” to me means being happy unapologetically as a black person without worrying what someone else may think or perceive how I choose to be happy and express myself. Black joy can be me being happy in any form, such as me wearing a bonnet :), feeling like I’m the shit without worrying how someone may interpret it.

Thinking about the community around you, how do they give you joy or help you pursue your own?

They motivate me, seeing people make a way out of no way and being happy with what they have always put things into perspective for me and motivates me to find ways of happiness. Seeing others happy always makes me happy.

Think about the thing, people, or Memphis-related place that brings you the most joy or allows you to be who you are.

My family Unapologetic. brings me joy, I love them folks mane lol like forreals. My blood family also brings me joy as well. Being able to be myself around them does that for me, I don’t have to apologize for being who I am, or shrink myself to be a certain way and I love it.

How does Memphis (think the city, the community, the places here that you find the most peace) allow you to express yourself?

The places I frequent actually value that you come as you are. I truly find peace in communities where they are accepting of every type of black person, and not the ones who fit a certain “mold”.

For the younger Black generations, what is your greatest piece of advice for living unapologetically or pursuing passions or joy?

I know it’s wayy easier said than done, but I will say stay away from people, or places who may make you feel like you being who you are is a problem. As long as it’s not harming anyone, be you. Also, this may sound morbid so I apologize, but do keep in mind that you’re going to die one day so you really shouldn’t care what someone thinks too much honestly.
