We’ve been bringing you 5 new projects from Memphis artists each month but this month, we decided to switch it up a little. To celebrate the holiday season, we’re highlighting a handful of essential Memphis holiday songs to add to your party playlist. Some are classics, some are brand new but all of them are undoubtedly MEMPHIS. Happy holidays WAMM fam <3

Gloss Up ft. K Carbon, Slimeroni, & Aleza – “25 Days of Christmas”

Yea sure, we’ve all heard of the “Twelve days of Christmas” (borrrring am I right?) so it’s about time someone put out a fresh take on the track. Thank god for our first ladies of hip-hop who cooked up something extra Memphis. “25 Days of Christmas” finds Gloss Up, K Carbon, Slimeroni, and Aleza doing what they do best: flawlessly delivering bars about being boss ass bitches. Grab your matching Christmas pajamas and your drink – the party has officially started.

Carla Thomas – “Gee Whiz It’s Christmas”

Is it really the Christmas season without Carla Thomas’ iconic “Gee Whiz It’s Christmas”? The song has all the essential holiday ingredients: cheery, up-tempo production paired with Thomas’ sugary sweet vocals. It’s a seasonal no-brainer, guaranteed to be a favorite across all generations. In fact, if someone *doesn’t* like this song, you might want to double-check your guest list – sounds like the Grinch is at your Christmas dinner.

Swae Lee, Rae Sremmurd & Ear Drummers – “Christmas at Swae’s”

Ok so *technically* Rae Sremmurd are from Tupelo, but for the purpose of this list we’re going to claim them because they put out not 1, but 2 underrated Christmas songs. First up is the piano ballad “Christmas at Swae’s”. It’s a departure from their normally trap-heavy beats and instead features Swae alone on the keys singing about a Christmas love lost. Swae’s melodies are – as usual – on point, further helping to deliver his emotional message. Sure, it’s not the jolliest song, but sometimes we’re in our feelings during the holidays and that’s ok too!

Kendrick P. – “Wish List”

2023 was a huge year for Kendrick P and honestly, 2024 looks like it’ll be even bigger for the Memphis artist. But before he gets ready to close this year out, he gifts us one last musical present in the form of a new Christmas song. “Wish List” is impressively everything we’ve come to know and love from Kendrick: sensual vocals floating over silky smooth synthed out production. With a chorus that goes “Christmas everyday when you’re my baby”, how can you not wanna snuggle up with your special someone and put this track on repeat?

Cheyenne Marrs – “Santa’s Lament”

Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Cheyenne Marrs seemed to pop-up with increasing regularity this year, finally convincing me to tune-in and see what all the chatter was about. Well, I’m sure glad I did, and encourage you to follow suit. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I actually was familiar with Cheyenne Marrs through his work with the local band Spacer, but his  debut solo record Everybody Wants To Go Home is what really captured my attention. All of that is to say that Marrs’ recently released a n excellent Christmas tune that is exactly what we would hope for from the burgeoning artist.

Ready or not, the holiday season is now upon us, which means the inescapable sounds of Bing Crosby and Mariah Carey have likely already invaded your headspace, whether you consented or not. That said, not all holiday music is created equally, and there are several awesome options headed our way soon. Here’s a quick guide to the best live music offerings heading to the M Town in the coming weeks that promise to leave you feeling downright festive…

Lucero Family Christmas (Dec. 6 at Minglewood Hall)

The Lucero Family Christmas returns to Minglewood Hall this year, as the hometown alt-country heroes pair up with special guests including Against Me!’s Laura Jane Grace (!!!) and hard rocking duo Heels. As many people have learned over the years, Lucero events at Minglewood Hall have a special alchemy that makes them all must-see events.

A BLVD Christmas featuring Anthony Hamilton (Dec. 8 at Mississippi Blvd. Church)

Grammy award winning R&B artist Anthony Hamilton will be joining the BLVD Sanctuary Choir & Orchestra for an evening of soulful holiday vibes at the historic Mississippi Blvd. Church on the edge of Crosstown. I have to admit, it was a bit startling to see Hamilton pop up on a flyer for a local church’s Christmas concert, but I’ll chalk it up to a bit of holiday magic.

Shangri-La Records Holiday Road Show (Dec. 9 at Shangri-La Records)

I can’t think of a better way to get my holiday shopping done than with a killer afternoon of live music soundtracking the experience. On Saturday, Shangri-La will be hosting a holiday sale alongside live performances from Susan Marshall, Steve Selvidge, Jeff Hulett, and J.D. Reager, all of whom will have their own yuletide-themed records for sale. Two birds with one stone!

Goner Presents: A Christmas Rock Show (Dec. 16 at B Side)

Speaking of great local record shops, Goner Records will be rocking the B Side stage with the festive musical stylings from Hartle Road , the Robby Grant Band, and The Sheiks with special guest Bennett. DJs Hot Tub Eric & Zac Ives–Goner’s two dynamic owners– are kicking things off at 7pm, with live music to follow.

Graham Winchester’s Honky Tonk Christmas  (Dec. 22 at Hernando’s Hide-A-Way)

Memphis music mainstay Graham Winchester will be hosting a night of honky tonk at the city’s best rockabilly roadhouse, Hernando’s Hide-A-Way, featuring holiday tunes from Tunstyles, Cheyenne Mars, and more. If you like your Christmas music with just a slight hint of sleaze, then this is the show for you.

Mempho Presents: A Southern Avenue Christmas (Dec. 22 at Minglewood Hall)

Memphis’ very own Southern Avenue will be returning home for an evening of holiday favorites in their signature throw-back soulful sound. The group, which seems to be on an almost endless touring schedule, seems to get better with each subsequent appearance.  I’d bet good money that the band will be at their best for this increasingly-rare hometown throwdown.

Memphis is and always has been(in our opinion) the epicenter of Holiday music for all time! It is no surprise that the birthplace of blues and the center of soul provides the lion’s share of holiday classics and modern melodies that consistently decorate the airwaves with joy, comfort, and on this tracklist at least, a bit of humor as well. Take a listen, and indulge in some holiday spirit! Here are 10 notable holiday songs to come straight out of Memphis! Enjoy!

Otis Redding White Christmas

Otis Redding… There is and will never be anyone quite like him. If you close your eyes and let yourself be taken by the music, you can almost feel the snowflakes falling at your feet, the depth of the forlorn in his voice is everyone who is away from their loved ones this year.

Indo G All I Want For X-Mas Is My Charges Dropped

And now for something completely different, and well, explicit! This track hits in a completely different way. Hilarious and real af, this song is sure to be a classic. Do yourself a favor and check the entire album, “Christmas N’ Memphis” which is, without a doubt, the best Christmas Album of all time.

Booker T. & the MGs Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Booker T. & THe MGs are one of the greatest bands of all time. Without singing a single word, this track exemplifies the essence of the Holiday and the spirit of 1966. The Hammond organ sings out like a callback to a simpler time when relaxation was the way, and not a care in the world was evident. You can almost smell the chestnuts roasting.

B.B. King Merry Christmas Baby

The Beale Street Blues Boy, otherwise known as B.B. King sure could make Lucille sing. 2020 has got us all feeling the blues from time to time, might as well indulge in one of the greats. The Holidays may be about hope and joy, but sometimes the blues are exactly what we need.

Al Green I’ll Be Home for Christmas

Al Green’s version of this Holiday standard makes you want to stand under the mistletoe and snuggle up in front of the fire. Green gives a masterclass in falsetto and romance as he croons this classic tune in the only way it should be heard.

Star & Micey 12 Days Of Memphis

For those of us who miss everything about Pre-Pandemic Memphis, this fantastic parody of 12 Days of Christmas name-checks everything from Gus’s wings to Al Greene’s Church. Don’t take it took it took seriously, Star and Micey definitely don’t! This tune shows nothing but love to the 901.

Elvis Presley (There’ll Be) Peace In the Valley (For Me)

What Memphis music list would be complete without a cut from Elvis? Many Remember the King for his swinging hips and screaming fans, ninja moves, and sideburns, but it’s important to remember that the King had a larger than life vocal range and deeply soulful voice. This rendition of the holiday standard is beautiful, deeply moving, and utterly iconic.

Sir Mack Rice Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin

The Classic R&B legend brings his unique style and fantastic turns of phrase to the holiday season with this incredible track. It has everything a classic track from “the time” should have, crying guitar licks, call and response, and incredible vocals, and a bit of a shuffle to make you move! The Stax Recording artist definitely was a pioneer.

Jessica Ray A Kiss At Christmas

Our opening track features the smooth and soulful sounds of Jessica Ray’s beautiful vocals steeped in a playful walking bass line and a guitar melody straight from Nile Rodgers’ repertoire. Brilliant, inspired, and toe-tappingly joyful!

Rufus Thomas I’ll Be Your Santa, Baby

The Album “Christmas in Soulsville” is the embodiment of joyful celebration and the soul and the season! Passionate Vocals (Check). Glorious Groove on the bass (Check). Funky Wah Guitar (Check). Innuendo? (CHECK CHECK CHECK).

If you’re Downtown after dark, be sure to head to the riverfront to see both the Harahan and Hernando De Soto bridges aglow with the holiday spirit of Mighty Lights. This nightly light show on the Mississippi River runs every hour on the hour from sundown to 10 p.m.

Grand Lobby of The Peabody Hotel

Visiting the Grand Lobby of The Peabody is one of the city’s holiday traditions. The hotel’s festive holiday decorations include a 30-foot-tall Christmas tree, twinkling lights, and garlands strewn along the mezzanine railings, and an unforgettably spectacular gingerbread house display that takes an entire month to create. The fountain belonging to the world-famous Peabody Ducks is decorated with a display of festive flowers.

Christmas at Graceland

Christmas at Graceland, I’ve never been to Graceland, but growing up I was always excited to ride past the most festive home in town. Hundreds of blue lights decorate the driveway, and the mansion includes Elvis’ favorite red velvet Christmas drapes and the same decorations originally found in Elvis’s home, including a life-size Nativity scene, A Christmas Tree, Santa sleigh, and reindeer.

Just like the “Freshman 15”, weight gain during this Covid frenzy is created from stressors and unhealthy food while staying home.  This “Quarantine 15” can definitely be avoided, with the help of uplifting self-care and trying out healthy food alternatives from local restaurants here in the 901.  As we approach the ultimate holiday season, these restaurants can assist you in putting a healthy twist on your annual table spread with mouth-watering, nutritious meals for the whole family!

1: Imagine Vegan

Since 2011, owner Kristie Jeffrey changed the Memphis dining scene by presenting Imagine Vegan Cafe.  In the heart of the Cooper-Young area, we find a restaurant that provides delicious food and desserts without causing harm to animals.  For those that aren’t vegan, this would be a great place to try as it’ll encourage you to see that vegan food is real food for real people.  Priding themselves in that their food is “Where comfort meets compassion”, their menu features ordinary descriptions without the ordinary ingredients as they use tasty vegan substitutes.  They refrain from animal products and by-products.  Imagine Vegan has been featured in PETA, Forbes, Edible Memphis, Vegan Crunk, Veg News, and Will Travel for Vegan Food.

2: City Silo Table + Pantry

Owners Rebekah and Scott Tashie stand by their mission of being about community, as well as believing that “there’s a happy medium between eating trendy, healthy food that doesn’t fill you up and heavy southern, nap-inducing meals”.  At City Silo Table + Pantry, it’s guaranteed that you can be served food that’s nutritious for your body, as well as good for the earth considering that this establishment is Earth-conscious.  City Silo supports local farmers and has a strict guideline on their disposal and usage of supplies to help out with recycling and composting programs.  On their menu, you can find a plethora of options from breakfast to dinner, with items such as maple tempeh, cauliwings, salads, portabella burger, hearty grain bowls, acai bowls, smoothies, fresh juices, elixirs, tonics, kombucha, and more!!

3: Bedrock Eats & Sweets

It all started with two words: “paleo diet”.  Owner and chef, Brandi Marter, stands by her mission of, “Care about yourself, care about your family and your friends. Try harder. Eating life-sustaining food is such an easy way to start. It’s so much more worth it than you know.”  At Bedrock Eats & Sweets, customers won’t find any of their dishes prepared with gluten, refined sugars, nor processed foods.  Their menu contains tasty, healthy items such as various waffle combos, breakfast tacos, macro bowls, salads, smoked meat plates, and tons more!

4: Cheffie’s Café

Let it be known, that at Cheffie’s Café, you’re the chef as you call the shots on your fresh creation.  With an overflowing variety of top-quality meats, fresh produce, delicious toppings, and more, you get to concoct your own salad and sandwich!  Their menu includes vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.  They also serve pomegranate green tea and can offer catering for the holidays if your family wants to try a healthy twist to the annual holiday spread.

5: INSPIRE Community Café

What better way is there to inspire others while inspiring yourself?  INSPIRE Community Café was established on the basis to not only create job opportunities with meaningful living wages but also to serve healthy and delicious food!  Might I also add that their food is not only good for the body, but for the soul as well. Ten percent of their net profits go towards nonprofit organizations with the initiatives of economic and racial justice. As for their menu, they serve everything from brunch to dinner, with several vegetable options, smoothies, coffee, and tea! Be sure to check out their website for any seasonal offerings!

And just like that, the holiday season is already here! Holiday parties and gatherings are sure to look a little different this year, but we’ve talked to Dr. Manoj K. Jain, a local infectious disease specialist, to get five things you need to know to stay healthy and safe this winter.

  1. Keep Gatherings Within the Household – Holiday dinners should look a little different this year. Dr. Jain recommends that you keep your gatherings limited to those within your household. Look at it this way, you can avoid the awkward dinner table questions from your extended family!
  2. Save the Massive Meals for Later – If you can’t skip the big gatherings, think about skipping the meal. Dr. Jain says that the best way to stay safe is to stay masked and distant. You can’t wear a mask while you’re chowing down, but you can while chatting it up (six feet away!). Quality time is the reason for the season – not just the turkey!
  3. Get Tested! – Can’t stay away for the holidays? Dr. Jain reminds us to get tested and quarantine before heading to events. Testing – and quarantining – is the only way to be sure that you’re negative and won’t spread COVID to family members, especially ones that are high risk.
  4. Talk About Staying Safe –  It’s up to us to be proactive about staying safe. Whether you’re thinking about your loved ones’ health or considering your own, Dr. Jain suggests having frank conversations about the risks of socializing. Not only do these conversations keep everyone informed, but they also provide everyone with a sense of responsibility. Keep each other accountable!
  5. Get your flu shot! – COVID is dangerous, but COVID plus the Flu is a recipe for crisis. Dr. Jain shares that the effects of having both illnesses can be devasting, so taking the extra step to protect yourself is more important than ever. It probably won’t cost you much, either – most health plans cover flu shots, so be sure to check your coverage before you go.

As a last reminder, Dr. Jain stresses that “the control or the ability to reduce risk of infection is in our hands. Our behavior determines the way this epidemic will turn in our community.” If we all take these tips into consideration, we can significantly clear up the spread of the COVID-19 in our communities.

Have a safe holiday!

It’s officially the Holiday Season, which for its own reasons comes with stress, social obligation,  and trying to find a balance for both the mind and body as your typical routine has a way of going out the door. As with everything else this year, Covid-19 has a huge role to play in defining what this season will look like and how we will interact with our family and friends, as social distancing, and for some, isolation, remains at the top of the list of important things to keep in mind during the season’s festivities. However, we have come up with a few easy ideas to help keep your mind and body in check, and how to make things a little easier this holiday season. Here are 5 ways to keep your mental and physical health in check this season!

1. Manage your Expectations.

Managing the stress of the holiday season is pretty hectic, however, you should do everything you can to manage your own expectations, while taking care of yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you are unable to maintain the exact workout schedule and diet that you strictly follow. After all, the nature of the holidays means that you are probably going to eat a little bit too much of “the wrong things” and not find as much time to exercise as intensely as you typically do. There are many ways to continue living a healthy lifestyle during this time, and putting more stress and pressure upon yourself to maintain your temple isn’t always the best way to approach your mental health positively.

2. Indulge on specific days – not the entire Season!

Overindulging is not only encouraged, but expected during the Holidays. It’s so easy to let yourself dive into that mound of food on the table, eat ALL the candy, and drink ALL the punch in front of you. Everyone else is doing it! While this is fun and delicious, the post-binge consequences, both physically, and mentally can take you off track and bring you down to a place of self-punishment and anxiety. An easy rule to follow is to indulge for a night, but toss or donate the leftovers out as soon as you can. Your family will love a little doggie bag of the delicious meal and treats that they just enjoyed, and you don’t need the lingering temptation of heavy Holiday food sitting around.

3. Remember, It’s only a few Single Days.

Holidays are a wonderful time to come together to enjoy food, fun, and shared beliefs with those we care about. We all want to let go, be thankful, celebrate, and yes, even indulge a bit, or even alot! In reality, these single instances of indulgence will have little impact on a healthy lifestyle. Let yourself have those moments and enjoy the seasonal food and drink you look forward to all year. Don’t be too hard on yourself, and when the party is over, so should be the indulgence. Keep it tightly reigned in so that you can keep yourself guilt-free, and also truly enjoy the Holiday.

4. Find the time to Stay Active.

With a bit of planning, taking the time for a short workout isn’t that difficult. Even if you can’t make it to the gym, it’s easy enough to schedule a quick workout, run, or even a 15 Minute HITT session before bed. The key is to not let the stress of NOT working out how you normally would cause you to suffer mentally. Do what you can, when you can, and everything will be alright!

5. Remember there is always time for self-care

Intentionally giving yourself time for self-care can do wonders to keep you in the right mind space, as well as keeping your blood flowing properly. A few protips – avoid sitting for too long, give yourself time to go for a short walk, or plan a few minutes for meditation every morning. You’re trimming the tree and drinking hot cocoa and you need a soundtrack. We’ve got you fam.

You need your sounds to be like you – Memphian. Check out this list of songs and albums by Memphians to keep you in the holiday spirit. Because who doesn’t like a little Memphis Christmas music?

If you’re a real Memphian then you know about Carla Thomas. Her father, Rufus, was a local icon and she was born into the Memphis music scene. Among her soulful hits were a couple of Christmas songs – “Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas” and “All I want for Christmas is You.” While you’re in the mood for classics, check out Memphis’ own Rock N Roll granny, Cordell Jackson. Her “Rock N Roll Christmas” and the less known “Be-Boppers Christmas” are great choices.

Valerie June gives her folksy spin on her recently released Christmas single, “Let it Snow.” She also has a cover of “Winter Wonderland.” Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars and up and coming artist McKenna Bray each have great renditions of “Hark, the Herald.” McKenna also covers “Silver Bells” and “O, Holy Night.” Jessica Ray, daughter of STAX records bassist Ray Griffin, is making her name in the Memphis music scene. She added her EP, “A Christmas Vibe” to her growing music catalog. Another up-and-coming artist, Reagan Strange, recently released a sultry cover of “O, Holy Hight.” For a real departure from the traditional, check out “3 Kings” by Memphis rapper, Yo Gotti, featuring Fabolous and DJ Khalid.

If you want to set it and forget it, try some of these Memphian Christmas albums. There are the classics like “I’ll be Home for Christmas” by Elvis Presley and a “Christmas in Soulsville” by STAX Records. Al Green’s “The Christmas Album” and B.B. King’s “A Christmas Celebration of Hope” are other famous Christmas staples. But here are some other choices to add some cheer to your holidays. Memphis rappers Indo G and Lil Wyte each have their own NSFW Christmas albums.

Memphian Tav Falco of Panther Burns fame released a Christmas album, “Tav Falco Christmas” which showcases covers of traditional songs. Famous Memphis band Booker T & the MGs brings in a feeling of the holidays with their instrumental album “In the Christmas Spirit.” The Memphis Ukulele Band has a twangy Christmas album with traditional covers and a cover of Carla Thomas’ “Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas.” Memphis singer and guitarist, Robby Grant, has a great alternative to traditional music with his Christmas album, “Put a Quarter in the Christmas Vending Machine.”

So whatever kind of mood you’re in for the holidays, WeAreMemphis has the soundtrack to your season. Head on over to our Memphis Music page for on Memphians making music.
