Memphis business relocation has many benefits. Memphis is at the center of global commerce – with an unparalleled multi-modal capability that moves goods to market fast and a B2B culture that supports access to new customers and markets worldwide. With a central location, an abundance of higher education institutions, a large talent pool, and a business-friendly regulatory and tax environment, our city is where technology, science, transportation, service and logistics industries are growing. Just ask our friends at the Greater Memphis Chamber

Location, location, location

Our central North American location makes it a great choice for national manufacturing and operations. Memphis is a legendary distribution hub whether you need to move goods by air, rail, water or land.

Road, rail, runway, and river

We don’t just SAY we move a lot of cargo at Memphis Airport, we can prove it. Our airport is number one among all U.S. airports in total cargo tonnage.  And once the cargo gets here, we have everything you need to get it where it needs to be. We have two interstate highways (I-40 and I-55), five major freight railroads, and the Mighty Mississippi River.

Business relocation incentives

While we continue to nurture Memphis-based businesses and industries, we also want to encourage businesses to make the leap and relocate to Memphis. This city offers a business-friendly tax and regulatory environment, workforce training incentives, and affordable, attractive resources that can help grow your margins. We have a highly networked, deeply engaged B2B community, which can accelerate access to customers and suppliers—locally and globally.

Business relocation to Memphis offers expansion opportunities you won’t find in comparable American cities, with benefits including:

  • Employee training incentives
  • Energy discounts
  • Expedited licensing and permits
  • Financing
  • Infrastructure improvement incentives
  • Tax credits

Project assistance for your business

The Memphis One Stop Shop program can help simplify your project and accelerate your timelines by providing in-depth local and state information. Knowledgeable representatives of Memphis and the state of Tennessee can work with you on a confidential basis to quickly answer questions and address issues involving:

  • Building codes
  • Building sites
  • City and county market data
  • Construction delays
  • Demographic data
  • Fire codes
  • GIS mapping
  • Land sites and acreage
  • Permits
  • Research
  • Statistical information
  • Taxation
  • Transportation access
  • Utilities
  • Zoning

Small and minority-owned business services

The Tennessee Business Enterprise Resource Office (BERO) provides technical, financial and business plan development advice and services. BERO incentives for small and minority-owned companies include assistance with B2B networking, creation of export opportunities and help with procurement, just to name a few.

Let’s get to work!

Tennessee is a Right to Work state, meaning it is unlawful to hire or fire based on affiliation or non-affiliation with unions and other labor organizations. Memphis’ low cost of living and lack of state income tax will appeal to your relocating employees—and with a total labor force of approximately 623,924, the city has no shortage of local job-seekers.

Memphis tech sector grows

The tech industry is making a big impact in the Memphis workforce, with wages increasing more than 15 percent over the last five years. Skilled tech workers are moving to our city in droves to fill the high-wage jobs in the Memphis tech sector. Tech employment has grown by 7.8 percent in the last five years and 35 percent since 2004, with computer systems design and related services leading the charge. Since the tech sector creates more economic spillover than most other industries, this is good news for all of us in Memphis.

Families thrive in Memphis

Memphis has a growing economy and good quality of life, with the vibrancy and culture of a big city and the welcoming feel of a hometown. Families that live and work in towns with higher-education institutions enjoy many advantages—and Memphis has 20 colleges and universities within 40 miles of the city center! This means your employees and their families will have convenient access to:

Now is the time to consider a partnership with the City of Memphis. It’s sure to be a win for you, your business or organization, your employees and their families.

More and more, remote work is becoming the norm. With modern technology keeping us constantly connected, companies are able to maintain efficiency without needing to fill an office space to the brim with employees. In fact, employees may not even need to live in the same city as there employer anymore, opening up a whole new world of possibilities for remote work. If you fall into the remote work category or are looking to make the change, you should be considering Memphis as the place to call home. Here’s why.

Cost of living

Bigger cities are only getting more and more expensive, and people – especially millennials – are getting priced out. It’s hard enough trying to budget for rent, groceries, daily living expenses, but that gets especially tricky when you want to throw in the cost of entertainment or the occasional vacation. In many cities, the thought of paying bills while having enough for entertainment and still being able to save some money seems ludicrous, but in Memphis, it’s totally possible. The cost of living in Memphis is roughly 21% lower than the national average, and that number grows when you compare to popular cities. Chicago, for example, is 41% more expensive than Memphis. Median home price in Atlanta is 202% more expensive than Memphis. For a remote worker, even if you have to travel for work on occasion, living in Memphis will stretch your dollar much further than in other cities, making things like home ownership and funding your dream vacation a reality.

Coffee shops galore

Part of any city’s character is defined by the locally owned businesses, and Memphis is no exception. Sure, there’s a Starbucks for every part of town, but as many remote workers know, finding your go-to coffee spot and work atmosphere is imperative to getting the work done. There’s a reason Memphis coffeehouse Comeback Coffee got a nod from Food and Wine as a top coffee shop in America. Unbeknownst to many, Memphis is a coffee town, but not in the snooty way you might expect from coastal cities. Here, it’s all about connectivity and creativity. There are tons of local coffee shops with fast and free WiFi, tasty treats, and some of the best coffee around. And in Memphis, being a regular means you’ll probably be on a first name basis with the owner in no time. Coffee culture in Memphis is celebrated by many, and there are plenty of cherished spots for a remote worker to set up shop.

Coworking Spaces

We get it, the hum of a coffee shop is not the ideal working environment for everyone. As many remote workers will tell you, sometimes the best place to plug in and crank out some work is a coworking space. And here in Memphis, you’ve got options. There’s the uber-hip Wonder Cowork Create (Wonder CC), offering a flexible and functional coworking space that fosters a community of creative freelancers, organizations, and small businesses that are getting started. There’s also the Launch Pad, nestled in the heart of downtown Memphis with access to private rooms, conference rooms, community rooms and more. Both offer different types of memberships to suit every person or organization’s need.

A great place for a side hustle

Let’s face it, sometimes the 9-5 job and daily grind doesn’t fulfill all our hopes and dreams. Heck, maybe it doesn’t fulfill our financial hopes and dreams either. For many people, this is how the side hustle is born. Whether it’s woodworking masterpieces or making jewelry, Memphis is the ideal place to turn your passion or hobby into a profitable side hustle (there’s a reason Etsy named Memphis a designated “Maker City). Memphis is a city that’s full of highly connected creatives, all supporting one another and fostering a vibrant community and ready to welcome you in.

Quality of life

From the cost of living to the city’s rich history, Memphis is a place where young professionals can get connected and make a difference. With a leisurely pace of life and world-class cultural amenities, this river town is the jewel of the mid-south. For remote workers looking for a place to call home that will support their professional lifestyle and provide opportunities beyond, look no further: Memphis is the place for you.

Tips on How to Get a Job in Memphis https://wearememphis.com/hustle/jobs/tips-on-how-to-get-a-job-in-memphis/ Tue, 19 Nov 2019 09:35:40 +0000 https://wearememphis.com/?p=4521 Memphis is an excellent place to work, but finding a job isn't always easy. Discover top tips to help your employment search turn up high-quality results.

There are tons of excellent reasons to live in Memphis, but right now, unemployment numbers are relatively high. While the national average is 3.7 percent, Memphis has been holding around 4.2 percent for a little while.

If you’re feeling the effects of a stable but slowing economy, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. Thankfully, we’re here to help. Today we want to provide some top tips on how to get a job in Memphis.

No. 1: Turn Finding a Job into a Job

With so much competition, you need to have an edge to come out ahead. One of the simplest and most effective solutions is to get into the mentality that finding a job is your new full-time position.

While you may not be able to clock in a full eight hours, the majority of your free time should be spent looking for openings and submitting applications. However, you also want to be sure that you’re spending your time wisely.

No. 2: Develop a Personal Pitch

Let’s pretend that you’re a business. If you had to sell yourself to potential customers (employers), what would you say? What skills and experience do you bring to the table? Why should hiring managers pick you out of the crowd?

This is where developing a pitch will come in handy. Even if you don’t have tons of experience, you have more to offer than you may realize. For example, perhaps you’re enthusiastic about helping other people, which is perfect for customer-centric positions.

To help you create your pitch, write down a list of your skills and capabilities. Once you have a list, test out your pitch with friends and family. Would they hire you based on the pitch alone?

Another thing to remember is that experience can only take you so far. Personality counts for a lot, so incorporate that into your pitch and you’ll do a lot better than listing off your credentials.

No. 3: Learn New Skills (or Refine Your Current Ones)

When it comes to making more money, two things will influence your paycheck more than anything. First, your level of responsibility (i.e., being a manager). Second is the rarity of your skill set. There’s a reason plumbers and doctors earn more money than cashiers. Almost anyone can be trained to count change, but it takes hard work and dedication to learn how to fix a toilet.

So, if your skills are not very exclusive, now is the perfect time to upgrade them. While you don’t have to go to medical school, there are plenty of other opportunities available.

One of the best ways to figure out which skills to develop is to see which industries are hiring the most. If there are more computer-based jobs, it’s beneficial to take a programming course online. Find the skill set that suits you best and get started.

No. 4: Use Memphis City Resources

The fact is that a bustling economy is good for the city, so the Greater Memphis Chamber offers a variety of resources for citizens. We encourage you to check them out online, but here are a few options:

  • Job Fairs
  • Chamber Job Board
  • Memphisworks ─ an interactive site for employers and job-seekers.
  • Workforce Investment Network Recruiting Center

The city of Memphis has plenty of opportunities if you know where to look. Now that you know how to get a job in Memphis, good luck with your search!

Securing a Memphis internship is a surefire way to jumpstart your career. Memphis is the perfect location to gain experience with numerous national corporations headquartered in the city. An easy way to find internships in Memphis is to reach out to major businesses across the area to see what opportunities are available. The following is how to find an internship in Memphis and advance your career.

Healthcare internships

Memphis has a number of major hospitals, including nationally ranked medical centers. For instance, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has ALSAC internships at their national Memphis headquarters. Internships are available in the fields of technology, finance, fundraising, marketing and more. Internships are paid opportunities with a 20-hour weekly commitment. All internships start at the top of each college semester.

City of Memphis internships

The Greater Memphis Chamber is another possible site of internships in the city. The city has multiple programs with internships for both youth and college students. One of the programs is MPLOY, an initiative created to provide meaningful summer work experience for students between the ages of 14 and 22. Urban Fellows is also sponsored by the Greater Memphis Children and created specifically for college students and recent university graduates. This is a paid internship with students assigned community projects designed to benefit city residents. Interns are expected to work 10 to 28 hours with projects lasting through each college semester.

College advertised internships

Most Memphis colleges arrange internship programs for students. Internships are set up off-campus with local businesses. College internships are typically related to the student’s specific major. Colleges in Memphis like Southwest Tennessee Community College will often advertise open internships on their websites and detail the qualifications needed for the position. Many colleges prefer to advertise internships that include a salary to students. Part-time hours are typically for internships in the fall and spring while summer internships may offer full-time hours.

Non-profit internship opportunities

Memphis non-profit organizations are always in need of interns. Internships at non-profits can usually be customized to help the student reach his or her career goals. For instance, Shelby Farms Park is a non-profit in Memphis offering internships tailored to those who potentially want to secure careers in the non-profit sector. Time commitment ranges from 15 hours to 40 hours per week. Non-profit internships are frequently unpaid positions, but if the organization offers a fellowship, there may be a stipend included.

Memphis job boards

Job boards are an underused resource for internship openings in Memphis. Although many private companies post traditional jobs on these boards, internships are frequently advertised too. Internship seekers should check out online resources like Choose 901 to find local openings.

How to Form an LLC in Memphis https://wearememphis.com/hustle/business/entrepreneurship/how-to-form-an-llc-in-memphis/ Thu, 24 Oct 2019 20:09:38 +0000 https://wearememphis.com/?p=4424 As you start the foundation of your business, you'll need register your company and create an LLC. If you've never done this before, it might seem like a totally foreign task to complete. Thankfully, it is relatively easy and doesn't take much work at all.

The post How to Form an LLC in Memphis appeared first on We Are Memphis.

Starting a business can often seem like a head-scratcher. If this is your first entrepreneurial venture and you haven’t been to business school, you might not know the first thing you need to do. After combing through business books, reading blogs online and sifting through endless research, you have probably discovered you need to form a limited liability company, or LLC. An LLC is an excellent way to start out as a small business in Memphis. But how in the world are you supposed to do it? Here’s what you need to know to form an LLC in Memphis.

Create a Name for Your Business

When looking into how to form an LLC in Memphis, you’ll first need to come up with a business name. It will also need to include some form of LLC in the title.

For example, Lucasfilm (the film company started by “Star Wars” creator George Lucas) is “Lucasfilm LLC.” LLC is in the logo; it’s just smaller within the imagery.

You will need to search the Tennessee Secretary of State to make sure the name you’ve chosen is not yet taken. You don’t want to file the paperwork and discover it’s already been used. So visit the Secretary of State and search the business name database.

Reserve the Name

Once you know the name is available, you should reserve it. You don’t want to see that it is available, begin creating all of your logos and then find out someone swooped in ahead of you. So while on the Tennessee Secretary of State website, fill out the “Application for Reservation of a Company Name.” This will reserve your name for four months, which costs $20.

Articles of Organization

Next, you’ll need to fill out the Articles of Organization form ss-4270. You can fill this out online. The fee begins at $300 and goes up to $3,000. Once you complete this form and everything is processed, you will receive your LLC.

Only the beginning

It is important to stay up to date on your annual reports and filings with the state in order to stay current and to not lose your LLC. Your filing agreement will provide this information in further detail.

Get your Business Up and Running

As you hone your craft and develop your business idea, you’ll want to formulate a plan for funding and getting your business off the ground. It’s important to work with individuals who know the ins and outs of running a business because they can help guide you through the startup process. Thankfully, the city of Memphis is perfect for that. With all kinds of services dedicated to startups and small businesses, you’ll have all the help you need to open and thrive. Whatever your venture is, as long as you have a great idea, a great product and a fantastic worth ethic, you’ll have the ingredients to thrive in Memphis.

If you’re looking for a new line of work, or you’re considering a move to Memphis and will need a new employer, you can apply to work at hundreds of fantastic businesses. Some of these are large corporations; others are startups with a bright future. Memphis is also a great destination to start your own business. However, if you want to know the best of the best companies to work for, at least in terms of quality of life and benefits offered by Fortune 100 companies, here are some of the top options in the city of Memphis, as reported by TripSavvy.

Nike

When it comes to athletic sportswear and shoes, no other company on the planet can compete with the likes of Nike. While a number of corporate Nike locations are spread around the country, Memphis is home to its largest distribution center in the world. Nike identified Memphis as an excellent location to set up shop, thanks to its mostly centralized shipping location. It can send out orders easily to reach major hubs like New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas and others within a day, and it can hit spots on the West Coast without taking too much more time (and without expediting shipments). This isn’t possible if Nike set its distribution center in New Jersey or Georgia.

When working with Nike, you have access to the in-house fitness center (which you’d better believe is state of the art), and there is an on-site child care facility to make it easier on working parents.

Medtronic

This company is the largest medical device manufacturer in the world (again, setting up its distribution facility in a centralized location in the U.S., similar to Nike). One of the best reasons to work for Medtronic is that hourly workers earn around $45,000 annually. And if you’re salaried, it’s significantly higher.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

This is a location where you get more than just a paycheck. There is the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping children, even in the smallest way. Whether you’re working directly with children who are struggling with an illness or you’re washing floors, this is truly meaningful work with a number of excellent benefits, including compressed workweek options, tuition reimbursement, and, depending on your job, you may have telecommunication options.

Finding your new line of work

These are just some of the best Fortune 100 companies to work for in Memphis according to TripSavvy. Of course, you don’t need to apply to only the biggest corporations in Memphis. You should always keep in mind what your passions are and seek out a line of work that connects with you and what you want to do professionally. Thankfully, there are plenty of options here in Memphis. And you’re always welcome to set up shop and begin your own startup as well.

If you’ve gone job hunting recently, chances are you’ve stumbled upon the importance of having an updated and optimized LinkedIn profile. There are a number of companies that won’t even look at your resume if you don’t have one uploaded to LinkedIn. While most HR departments and others hiring new employees don’t care how many “followers” you have, they do care what’s on your profile. So if you’re looking to land a job in Memphis, here are a few ways to optimize your profile to help set yourself apart from the job-hunting competition.

Start with the photo

Your LinkedIn photo needs to be different from what you might use on Facebook or Instagram. It needs to be professional. Avoid the blurry images you have of yourself, or anything that has you out with friends. It needs to be of just you, wearing a professional outfit. Even if you need someone to help you take a professional headshot, do so. The only time you should even consider moving away from this is if you work in a specialty career path. For example, if you’re a chef, have a picture of you in the kitchen (but always make sure it’s still a profile picture of your face). Or, if you’re a videographer, you can be holding a camera. If it’s brand- and career-related, it’s OK to have it included. But other than this, always go professional.

Creative headline

Your resume will include all the bullet points of your working history. The headline is what helps turn heads, so get creative with this. When looking for Memphis jobs, you want someone to see a bit of your personality. You’re not just a mindless drone floating around. So, showcase yourself and your personality in the headline. Here are some creative examples if you need inspiration.

Create professional blogs

LinkedIn is not the place to upload spammy content to try to sell something. It’s not a place to post YouTube videos of your vacation to the Bahamas. However, it is the perfect spot for you to craft a blog geared toward your profession. If you’re a marketer, keep a blog about marketing, using social media to expand a brand, SEO, mobile marketing and so on. You can also upload from your blog if it’s located on another website. This keeps your profile fresh, relevant and in front of employers.

Participate

LinkedIn might be for professionals, but it is still a social media platform. When looking at getting a job in Memphis, join a related group that connects you to other Memphis professionals. Maybe you connect with other kitchen operators or hotel managers. Whatever group you join, make sure to post, stay active and participate. There’s no point in joining a group if others don’t know you exist.

Set yourself apart

These are just a few ways to set yourself apart from other job seekers in the greater Memphis area. Just remember, as is the case with your paper resume, keep it up to date and comb through it for any errors. A clean, easy-to-read and concise resume will let potential employers know everything they need to know about you, which helps boost your chance at landing that all-important interview.

Whether you recently moved to Memphis or you’ve called the city home your entire life, it is important to have reliable work at your disposal. However, if you’re out of work, you may wonder where to turn during your job search. While hitting the pavement and walking around town may help you come across entry-level jobs at restaurants and boutiques, if you’re looking for an upper-level job, there are better ways to use your time. So when looking for work, here are a few ways to find a job in Memphis.

Brush Up That Resume

Now is the perfect time to update and touch up your resume. However, don’t have just one. There will be different positions for which you’ll want to highlight different skills. If you’re hitting the streets to hand out resumes at restaurants or clothing stores, have resumes on hand that are tailored to those jobs and highlight the skills and previous work experience you have in the specific industry.

If possible, have someone else read through your resume. They can point out mistakes and help you polish it.

Look for Openings

If you have a specific company you want to work for, head over to the company website and look for the Careers page, then check to see if there is an available opening. If you don’t find this information on the site, email the company directly to ask.

Next, you’ll want to check websites like LinkedIn and Monster, two of the largest job posting websites anywhere. You may also want to check The Commercial Appeal newspaper website to see what kinds of jobs are listed there as well.

Submit But Don’t Wait

Most jobs require submitting an application and resume online. However, after submitting, don’t just sit and wait. Continue looking. It may take some companies weeks, if not months, before they get around to filling a particular position. You probably don’t have that kind of time, so keep looking and applying.

Research

When a Memphis business calls and wants to bring you in for an interview, make sure to research the business. You need a strong understanding of what the business does, its history and what kind of products or services it offers. This way, during the interview process, you can ask questions. There will be a time during the interview when the human resources representative will ask if you have any questions. By asking well-thought-out questions regarding the company, you will demonstrate your knowledge and willingness to go the extra mile.

Finding the Right Job

These are just a handful of the ways you can go about looking for work in Memphis. Oftentimes, looking for work feels like a full-time job. So don’t get discouraged if you don’t get a quick response after submitting one application. Stick with it and keep looking. With a growing population and businesses coming in every week, you’ll find a job that fits your skill set perfectly.

Treat it as a full-time job

Looking for work in Memphis is a full-time job. It is important to wake up as if you’re preparing for work and to hit the digital pavement early. Visit the website of companies you’d like to work with (often, jobs are listed directly on these sites prior to larger job forums and listing pages), check out websites you have registered with to see if there’s anything new, and do everything in your power to improve your ability to land a job.

There might be some days when there simply is nothing else you can do for the job hunt. Should that happen, that is perfectly fine. Just do everything you can every day. Putting in the effort will drastically increase your ability to find a job in Memphis.

job search concept, find your career, online website

Additional training

You need to remain proactive and do what you can to improve your attractiveness to potential employees. If you’re not finding (or landing) a job right away, you might want to consider adding additional training to your resume.

There are a number of ways you can do this. One of the best (depending on the kind of job you’re looking for) is through certification courses. If you work as an office administrator, you can receive certifications for your skills in Microsoft Office and a number of Google applications. There are locations around town that will then allow you to test your skills, and, should you pass, you’ll receive certification for your skills directly from Microsoft (or Google). This is a nice bullet point to place on your resume.

Teach yourself something new

While job hunting is a full-time job, you may not be able to spend the entire day hitting the pavement. During the extra time, try to teach yourself something new. Consider what will make your resume that much better for your particular line of work. If you work in marketing, look into mobile application design. You know your line of work and what businesses are interested in. Use this information to develop a new skill and improve your job landing potential.

Network

There are networking events throughout town. You can find information on these events at a number of locations. Check out the We Are Memphis website to start. You can also look at the local newspaper for listings on networking activities. The website MeetUp is great for highlighting events and groups around town, including networking events. You can even search for “networking events in Memphis” on Facebook.

Head out to the events you can make. After long days of looking for work, it can be good to get out of the house for a bit. Make sure to have business cards and consider including your LinkedIn address on the cards. This will include your active resume (so you don’t have to carry around a briefcase of your resume at these events).

The Memphis job-scape is just as diverse as the population, and it doesn’t hurt that the city is so committed to making this the perfect place to work, live and play either. Here are three awesome up-and-coming jobs that might make you reconsider your career path.

1. Become an Entrepreneur

Why is Memphis one of the South’s greatest startup incubators? While entrepreneurs freely admit that the city isn’t some kind of Silicon Valley clone, its unique cultural assets and resource infrastructure make it possible to ditch the blueprint and succeed in your own way.

Memphis is a great place to start a business. In addition to a cheaper cost of living, more affordable office space, and a thriving workforce population, entrepreneurs can draw on relationships with their peers: The city’s reputation as an innovation hub makes it easy to connect with partner startups that haven’t lost their spark of inspiration.

This region also caters to companies that want to settle down. The established industry means that you don’t have to search far for supply chain companies, staffing assistance or business service providers that can help you scale up. The presence of local firms like ServiceMaster, which owns numerous service companies, also makes this a good place to start a franchise.

2. Join the Transportation Sector

Memphis’s river location has always made it a huge hub for commerce. While things may look a lot different from how they did in the days of pioneering river traders, the steady development of highways and rail has rendered today’s city just as integral to the exchange of goods.

Memphis is home to FedEx.

Memphis transportation jobs come in many forms. As home to companies like FedEx and Ozark Motor Lines, this is a good place to get directly involved in logistics operations as a driver — or work your way up to an executive role that lets you transform the entire industry.

3. Get Your Start in Film

Tennessee isn’t the only southern state that caters to the film industry, but it’s one of the few with a sustained track record of success. The city’s astounding musical output has set the perfect mood for countless box-office hits. The Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission’s support for auteurs, writers, cast members and crews also makes it easy to get a production steaming forward successfully.

Filmmakers who come to Memphis commonly discover untapped talent. From theater programs that hide the next big stars to visual art studios that might just inspire radical new set designs, you’ll never find a better place to cultivate a bold artistic vision.

Memphis is a unique city with a reputation for attracting amazing talent that powers industries large and small. How will you make your impression on the professional landscape?

Are you looking for a new destination for your business? With so many possible locations around the country, there is no limit to possible options. So, it is important to do your homework and dive into what each city can offer you. There are a number of reasons why you should consider Memphis, ranging from its centralized location in the United States to its growing economy and access to rail, air, and road shipping lanes, not to mention a qualified and skilled workforce. If you find Memphis is the right fit for your business needs, here is what you’ll need to do when relocating your business to Memphis.

Check out tax and business incentives

One reason why you might select Memphis over other destinations isn’t just because of its centralized location or less expensive properties than New York or Los Angeles. It’s because of the tax incentives. You want a location that will help you save money while boosting productivity and profits. There are a number of tax incentives available to you when you move your business to Memphis.

Through the Greater Memphis Chamber, you can search through the different incentives available to your business. This includes tax incentives, infrastructure and utility incentives, training and workforce incentives, plus financing incentives. So prior to any move, make sure to check out the Greater Memphis Chamber website for all financial opportunities available to you.

Small and minority-owned business services

Beyond the incentives open to all businesses moving into Memphis, there are added perks of owning a small business or being a minority running a business. The Tennessee Business Enterprise Resource Office (BERO) offers a number of business plan development services, which can include everything from B2B networking to assist with procurement. Before opening up shop, you should look into these services to find out if, or how, BERO can help you save money and get your business up and running faster.

Moving companies

If you’re moving equipment and goods from another city, you will need to book a moving company that is well respected and accredited. This way you know you’re working with a quality service provider who will get your company to Memphis in one piece. While the exact moving provider will vary depending on where you’re located, you need to consider BBB accredited companies and then go with the moving company that best fits your commercial and business needs. You can visit the BBB.org website for more information on accredited moving companies that can transit all of your business material from your current destination to Memphis. After all, you have all kinds of work to put in prior to the move. Having a professional take care of the moving services for you can make things that much easier (and give you one less thing to stress over).

Business ideas usually don’t pop out of thin air. In fact, many of us have had our best ideas when doing something completely different. If you’re struggling to uncover that next great business idea, it might be because you’re trying just a little too hard. To help break up the mental business fog, we recommend getting outside, taking in the beautiful city, and taking part in one (or all) of these activities. Each one can help get the mental juices flowing.

1. Go Where You’re Happiest

Where in town do you feel happiest? Is it taking in the beautiful outdoor art? Perhaps it’s pulling up a stool at one of the many new local breweries. Or maybe you simply enjoy the calm of walking your dog during the evening twilight.

Whatever makes you happiest and brings out your natural satisfaction is where you should begin. Sometimes, focusing on your job forces you to see only the trees and not the full forest of a possible business idea. Going where you’re satisfied and comfortable tears down the barriers you likely experience throughout the day, which makes it that much easier to spark your next business idea.

2. Go for a Run

Or, you can go lift some weights, head out to the gym, or bike your neighborhood, basically, just get your body moving. This is one of our favorite ways to spark creativity, because when you elevate your heart rate, you also pump more oxygen and nutrients to your brain. All of this is great for idea-generating.

It doesn’t matter if you’re someone who prefers to work out inside or if you like the sun on your neck while jogging through one of the many Memphis public parks, exercise can work as a personal idea generator.

3. Try Something New

What makes Memphis so great? There is more than one answer here, but for many of us, it’s that there’s always something new to try out. Whether it’s a locally owned restaurant opening up shop, a new art exhibit or just a new club to discover, there’s always something new to try.

New experiences force your brain to think differently. You may have never found yourself to be much of a dancer, but a local dance class can get you out of your comfort zone, see the world differently, and help spur on new kinds of thinking.

When you find yourself struggling with generating a new business idea, it’s likely because you’re thinking like you always do. Trying something new changes it, which means you may be able to find that new idea as well.

You’re Just an Idea Away

We love the city of Memphis. There’s always something fun and exciting going on. It’s also a great destination for business. With these three tips, you’ll discover brand-new ways for generating ideas for either your own business or a brand-new one.

We know that landing that job you have always wanted can be a nerve-wracking but gratifying experience. While a solid resume and substantial work experience are all tools to help you get in the door for the interview, those 20 to 30 minutes that you spend with the interviewer can be all that is needed to sway his or her decision. It only takes a few moments to create an excellent first impression. Unfortunately, it can take a significant amount of time to rectify a bad one. Want to know what it takes to land jobs in Memphis? We went straight to the hiring managers’ mouths to help you with a few tips that can make that first impression the one that can seal the deal.

No. 1 — Dress for success

Wearing the right clothing is a vital part of making a first impression. While the Memphis area has embraced casual business attire for everyday wear, clothing for an interview should always stay conservative and professional. Perform a quick check in the mirror to see if there is anything odd that stands out. Make sure nothing is sloppy or wrinkled, and don’t forget the details such as a professional tie, briefcase or satchel. Take the time to research the business and consider an outfit that is similar to the ones worn by those who work there. The goal of the interview is to show that you are the right person for the job and the business culture.

No 2. — Maintain good eye contact

Honesty and respect are what employers are looking for in Memphis, and with such little time to gauge interviewees, appropriate eye contact can go a long way to establish that. Not holding eye contact can be from anxiety or insecurity, but it can be off-putting and convey a lack of trust and confidence. When seated, practice good posture, avoid fidgeting and keep eye contact throughout the discussion. Practice with a friend if maintaining eye contact is difficult.

No. 3 — Be knowledgeable and confident

An interviewer expects you to know about the company that you are looking to become a part of. Do your due diligence and research the company before it is time for your interview. This will show that you want to be essential to the company and that you know how to prepare. When sharing the knowledge you have learned, deliver it with confidence and only when appropriate. Do not sound cocky. Always smile and deliver a solid handshake; emit an approachable and friendly persona. An interviewer is not only looking for confidence but someone who can work well with others on the team as well as customers.

No. 4 — Follow up with a thank you

Following up with interviewers to thank them for their time and consideration is a great way to show that you are excited and desire the position. It also shows good manners. Good followup is vital in business, and a quick note or email can prove you know this. Keep it short and simple; remember that it is not a continuation of the interview, just a simple note of appreciation.

We want you to land that dream job in Memphis. By following the tips above, you can help make that amazing first impression and hopefully embark on the career you desire.

Memphis is a hub of small business, with innovation and change fueling Memphis’ unique culture and offerings. However, starting and maintaining a business is an incredible challenge—according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 50 percent of American businesses fail in the first five years. To help small businesses thrive in Memphis, TN, we’ve compiled some advice from entrepreneurs across the country who have achieved startup success. Here’s what they have to say.

1. “Good ideas are cheap. Success comes from hard work, not a stroke of genius.”—Nir Eyal

Nearly everyone knows someone with a business idea that they’re sure will solve everyone’s problems and make them millions of dollars. However, if asked, many of these people don’t have plans for turning their ideas into profitable companies, in which case even the best idea becomes completely worthless. If you have an idea for a small business, it’s essential to actualize it with a business strategy and concrete goals to make it into a reality.

2. “Don’t plan everything! Listen to your customers and make changes as needed.”—Vanessa Van Edwards

Being sure of yourself and laying concrete plans is essential for getting a business off the ground. However, once you’re up and running, it’s paramount to listen to your customers. Though the phrase “the customer is always right” has been watered down in recent years, it holds true in terms of small business development. Ultimately, customers will only pay for things they want, so if business owners grow out of touch with their customers’ wants, it will swiftly become impossible to make money. Always keep the desires of your consumers at the forefront, and make sure the product you’re offering solves a problem for your customers.

3. “If you want to succeed in business, count your costs and project revenue ahead of time.”—Jason Quey

Though this mostly applies to businesses with venture capital, all entrepreneurs should be wary of upscaling too quickly. Although scaling should be an eventual goal for any business, it’s important to remember that expanding costs money. If a startup grows too quickly without the revenue to support the expansion, it will eventually crumple under its own weight. With this in mind, entrepreneurs need to always ensure cost does not exceed revenue, or else they will find themselves swiftly going under.

Memphis has seen a significant rise in a variety of employment opportunities over the past few years. In just two examples, the education administration industry has grown by 13.2 percent, while hotel management has risen by an astonishing 18 percent. However, these figures don’t even come close to the rise in demand seen for compensation and benefits managers, as the employment industry itself has risen by a mind-boggling 35.8%.

The truth of the matter is Memphis is a prized gem in the employment industry. To land a job in Memphis, TN, though, you’ll need to be on top of your game. Here’s a look at six things to do before your job interview in Memphis.

Research the potential employer

To get a true sense of a company, you can research, read news releases and talk to friends. You may even be able to speak with a few of the company’s existing employees if you know any. The goal is to get a better understanding of what the company represents so you can align your interview answers to the employer’s values and morals. Reviewing the company’s profile on social media and on its own website is an excellent way to prepare for your job interview, but you should also check out company review sites such as Glassdoor, which offers an in-depth look at a company’s values and standards. Individual employee blogs may even be available to provide you with a glimpse at life within the company.

Pinpoint and familiarize yourself with topics worth discussing

By scrolling through the company’s social media presence on sites like Twitter, you can gain insight into the latest news, events and product topics related to your potential employer. Keep these in mind, as they’ll be worth discussing during the job interview. If applicable, you should also try to use one or more of the company’s products before the interview, and be prepared to discuss the products’ features and offer input.

Research the interview process

Try to find out who will be part of the interview process ahead of time so you can research these individuals. A simple Google or LinkedIn search will likely give you a strong starting point. The more you know about them individually, the better you’ll be asking and responding to questions. You might also consider asking the human resources contact for the company to provide you with an idea of the interview format ahead of time to help you better prepare.

Practice in front of a mirror

Always take the time before an interview to carefully think about the lasting impression you wish to leave. Make a mental list of your skills, accomplishments, creative endeavors and any volunteer work or special training you have participated in. If you are concerned about your nerves getting the best of you, jot down a few notes or bullet points to guide you through the interview. Don’t just THINK about your responses, practice them by getting in front of a mirror. Ask yourself a few anticipated questions out loud and answer them. If you have a friend available, do a mock interview with them and ask for feedback.

Dress and look professional

Plan to keep your attire basic and conservative. Most importantly, make sure whatever you wear is clean and pressed. That said, it’s not just about your clothing choices. Make sure your shoes are clean, your fingernails are manicured, and no loose hems or threads are dangling from your clothes. If you look your best, you’ll feel your best, which will boost your confidence. And confidence is key to pulling off a winning interview.

Be prepared

You don’t want to be caught short in the event that your interviewee requests a list of references. With this in mind, be sure to have copies of your references on hand, along with a few extra resumes and a notepad. This both demonstrates your sincere interest in acquiring the position and illustrates that you are prepared and organized.

With preparation and a passion for the job you’re applying for, Memphis is sure to exceed all your employment expectations.

Working remotely can be a blessing and a curse. Although it often feels like a breath of fresh air to get out of the office, finding a public place with a reliable Wi-Fi connection can be difficult. With that in mind, here are some work spaces in Memphis for working remotely in Downtown Memphis.

5 best Memphis Wi-Fi locations in the downtown area

Bluff City Coffee – Located on South Main Street, Bluff City Coffee is perfect for a remote day of work. Breakfast sandwiches, pastries, a lunch menu and delicious coffee, this locally owned coffee house is a popular favorite (try the “Golden Kelli” drink and thank us later).

Ghost River Brewing – If you like a relaxed work pace later in the day, you might want to check out Ghost River Brewing. Aside from having delicious, locally brewed beer and free WiFi, the taproom serves as a great place to host casual meetings or after work drinks.

Stock & Belle – Looking for a truly dynamic space to work that you won’t get bored in? Stock & Belle is the spot for you. With a hair salon on the second floor, a retail store, coffee space, and art gallery on the main floor, this location brings plenty to look at, speedy WiFi, and a cool atmosphere all in one.

Café Keough – Beloved amongst downtowners, Café Keough is a locally owned French café offering fresh, handmade breads, cookies, and entrees as well as expertly crafted coffee drinks. As an added perk, you can also order a cocktail or beer to take the edge off while you work.

Starbucks – New to the downtown area, the Starbucks on the corner of Monroe and Main offers all the familiar comforts of the franchise. Right on Main Street, it’s conveniently located in central downtown, walking distance from nearby shops and restaurants.

When you’re looking for free Wi-Fi and a great atmosphere that will let you get some work done while you’re away from the office, consider our list of the best places with Wi-Fi in Memphis.

Memphis is a city of doers, dreamers, and believers. That’s what drives this unstoppable city. Now we can add that Memphis is one of the best cities to find a job!

So, you’ve graduated from college. First of all, congratulations! That’s a big deal, and we all know it’s not easy. We also know that once the celebrating is over, the hard part really starts—finding a job. We don’t need to go on about the current job market because we’re sure you’ve heard it all before, but did you know that if you graduated from college here in Memphis, you have a couple of advantages right off the bat?

For starters, you have access to countless Memphis startups, businesses and entrepreneurs—not to mention big corporations with Memphis headquarters—all of which are eager to connect with hard workers who have big ideas straight out of college. Second, there are a lot of prestigious Memphis colleges and universities that look pretty darn good on a resume. Whether you’ve just graduated from any one of our more than 10 colleges and universities, these tips will come in handy as you head out on your job hunt.

  1. Start early: If you wait until after graduation to start your job search, you’re already late. Many college students start networking with faculty members, lining up internships, taking leadership roles in campus organizations and attending club events as early as freshman year. It sounds crazy, but these are competitive times—get an early start or risk getting left behind.
  2. Focus on what you’ve learned: Employers like to see candidates with experience, but as you’re no doubt aware, it’s hard to show experience when you’re looking for your first real job. If you don’t have a long employment history, focus instead on your life experiences. What have they taught you? How would you apply those lessons to a new job? How did they make you a better, more well-rounded person? If you can answer these questions with conviction, you’ll impress most employers more than you would by simply reciting a laundry list of previous jobs.
  3. Polish up your social media presence: When it comes to social media, there are two things you should keep in mind. One, it offers a great opportunity to show off your professional skills, network and connect with people who can help you in your budding career. Two, if your mom has a Facebook page, chances are your future boss does too, so be careful what you post.
  4. Learn to budget: Your college days are behind you now, and so is the “work-hard-play-hard” ethos that came with them. It’s easy to see your first real pay check as your ticket to new clothes and nights out at the bar, but that attitude is a great recipe for a hangover and an empty wallet. Landing a job requires focus, and staying out of debt requires learning how to manage your money. After all, that first job might not last forever.
  5. “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams”: Although it’s been a while since Henry David Thoreau penned that famous quote, it’s stood the test of time. Even as it becomes more difficult to secure the type of safe, permanent job that defined past generations, there’s never been a better time to start your own business and follow your own unique vision. Decide what you want and go after it.

Memphis has a reputation as the best city for startups, a friendly place for businesses, and a city that supports arts, music and all things creative. If you’ve just graduated from college and are working on figuring out your next move, you couldn’t have a better launch pad. We wish you the best of luck!

Entrepreneurship is a core component of the American dream. Here in Memphis, the spirit of entrepreneurship has spilled into Memphis, where a strong entrepreneurial culture is brewing across different sectors of the economy.

In addition to Memphis’s popular Beale Street and BBQ locations, this constant growth is also being felt in other areas, including technology, the arts, agriculture and food services. It helps that Memphis is uniquely placed to offer a low cost of living, a taste of Southern hospitality and a good quality of life.

Entrepreneurs in action

To learn about the history of local entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds, look no further than the National Civil Rights Museum, which details the struggles and triumphs of African Americans in both the country and our city. Indeed, the entrepreneurial spirit of Memphis is closely intertwined with this history, with a strong sense of community and an understanding of the past, present and future of the city.

If you’re looking for both a tasty meal and a quick history lesson, start off at the Four Way Restaurant in South Memphis. This flourishing establishment has served iconic leaders and musicians, like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., B.B. King, and many others.

Entrepreneurs in the arts

Memphis has long been known for its strong artistic culture, so it’s no surprise that entrepreneurs in the arts are thriving in these parts. Their success can be seen everywhere from theaters and ballet companies to museums and private exhibitions.

Ballet Memphis serves as just one example. Founded by fourth generation Memphian Dorothy Gunther Pugh, it’s embedded with richly symbolic art and has made ballet available to a larger portion of the population. The Hattiloo Theatre in Memphis is another popular art center that combines actors and the community through rich and meaningful performances.

Entrepreneurs in food and service delivery

The food scene in Memphis is poised for explosion. Beyond offering the classic BBQ selections that Memphis is known for, entrepreneurs have opened businesses that offer everything from traditional American cuisine to a taste of global flavors. Whether you’re seeking Italian wine and bites or fusion food trucks, you needn’t leave Memphis!

For a taste of Southern excellence, try out the New Orleans-infused Second Line Restaurant, and don’t sleep on Memphis Black Restaurant Week—an annual event that highlights the creative flavor of African American Memphis restauranteurs.

Entrepreneurs in Memphis

Our city’s unique location makes it both a commercial and financial hub, which is ideal for entrepreneurs looking to start or grow businesses of all kinds. If that sounds good to you, why not hop on the bandwagon and take advantage of our city’s booming economy to bring your business to life?

In addition to being a hub of entertainment for locals and tourists alike, the city of Memphis is home to a flourishing business community. There are numerous entrepreneurial opportunities to be found here, including but by no means limited to the areas of music and the arts, food and dining, and professional services.

Music and the arts

It’s hard not to associate Memphis with Elvis Presley, but our city’s music scene extends far beyond The King. For an up-close-and-personal glimpse at just how central live music is to the daily lives of many in Memphis, look no further than the bars and restaurants on Beale Street and elsewhere—not to mention the music festivals held in these parts throughout the year.

Not to be outdone, the Memphis art sector is also expanding, with galleries popping up across the city. In fact, Shelby County’s nonprofit arts industry accounts for nearly $200 million in annual spending and sustains the equivalent of more than 6,000 local jobs. The arts are more than just a hobby or attraction here in Memphis – it’s a creative economy.

Food and dining

Memphis is known far and wide for its BBQ, but make no mistake—our city’s culinary offerings aren’t at all limited to deliciously seasoned ribs. In fact, the restaurants and eateries around here offer a wide variety of cuisines, each more mouthwatering than the last. Whether you’re looking to drop by a food truck for a quick yet satisfying bite or enjoy a sit-down meal prepared by an award-winning chef at a high-end restaurant, Memphis has you covered.

Professional services

A growing city like Memphis doesn’t simply run on autopilot. Rather, it’s the hustle of the locals that keeps things chugging along smoothly across a wide variety of fields, including accounting, legal assistance, printing, construction, teaching, cleaning, landscaping… the list goes on.

Memphis is always growing, which makes it the ideal place to launch a startup company. Whatever your area of expertise may be, our city will welcome your entrepreneurial spirit.

Memphis has a reputation as a great place to live, play and work. Let’s just talk about that last one for a second, because Memphis has never been a city to shy away from the hustle. That’s why our city has become a destination for dreamers and entrepreneurs—anyone with a vision and the determination to make it a reality. It’s also the reason why four Memphis businesses were recently ranked among the best places to work in America.

Every year, Fortune magazine names the 100 Best Companies to Work For, and we are so proud of the organizations that made the 2018 list! If you’re looking for a job in Memphis, you might want to hit up one of these:

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Ranked at No. 57, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital employs 4,355 people in Memphis. When asked about the high corporate morale, employees pointed to personable leaders and an understanding of how important their jobs are. Moreover, many reported genuinely looking forward to work every day, and noted that St. Jude’s mission—helping children with serious illness—makes the hospital an incredibly gratifying place to work. Other benefits of working for St. Jude include subsidized childcare, an on-site gym and a strict non-discrimination policy.

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare

Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare employs 11,402 people at several locations in and around Memphis, and was ranked at No. 91 on this year’s list—up from No. 92 last year. Employees were quick to point to the “extraordinary” culture as one of the qualities that make Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare such a great place to work, along with the organization’s commitment to diversity (minorities make up more than 46 percent of the workforce). This healthcare company had 690 job openings as of January 2018, so step right up.

FedEx

Headquartered in Memphis, FedEx was bumped up from No. 99 on last year’s list to No. 94 in 2018. The company employs 281,933 people worldwide, with perks including college tuition reimbursement, fully paid sabbaticals and health insurance for part-timers. In addition to FedEx being a great place to work, many of its employees take pride in the company’s dedication to charitable causes. Did you know FedEx has committed to donate $200 million to 200 communities by 2020?

Baker Donelson

Since the Baker Donelson law firm was founded in 1888, it has branched out considerably. It now employs nearly 1,500 people in offices all over the Southeast—but it still proudly has its headquarters in Memphis. Baker Donelson took the No. 96 spot on this year’s list, with employees citing generous salaries, generous perks and total trust in management as some of their favorite things about the job. Notably, some also described an atmosphere in which “competition and rivalry do not exist.” Sounds good to us!

Memphis offers all the benefits of a big city with the personality of a small town. It’s this combination of a business-friendly attitude and a family-friendly philosophy that has made it a hub for major companies, as well as a destination for those who want to start their own businesses. Here’s to your Memphis enterprise being named one of Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For next year!

Black entrepreneurship is on the rise nationwide, but not without its challenges. Getting venture capital funding for black business owners remains a struggle—fewer than 1 percent of black founders receive funding, according to Fast Company—which leaves many unable to hire employees. Despite these challenges, Memphis has emerged as America’s top city for black-owned businesses.

Ranking the top cities

In a recent study by Blacktech Week, Memphis dethroned Atlanta and took the No. 1 spot on a ranking of the best metropolitan areas for black-owned companies after coming in at No. 3 last time around. Montgomery, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., and Savannah rounded out the rest of the top 5.

The study used data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Kauffman Foundation’s 2017 Index of Startup Activity to identify the cities in which black-owned businesses are thriving. The results showed that compared to the Atlanta metro area, Memphis has a lower unemployment rate and a higher percentage of black-owned businesses, as well as a comparable average annual revenue.

Why Memphis?

As Memphians, we know we’ve been putting in work to make progress for minority entrepreneurs. But outsiders tend to ask, what is it that makes our city special for entrepreneurs? As it turns out, a lot of things.

  • Low cost of living: Memphis enjoys a remarkably low cost of living, despite being a fairly large city. Memphis is the 23rd biggest city in the U.S., but its cost of living is roughly 12 percent below the national average. A 2015 survey also showed that folks in Memphis pay less for utilities—including gas, water and electricity—than anywhere else in the nation.
  • Lots of support: As a city, our organizations want to see black-owned businesses thrive and work towards that every day. The Black Business Association of Memphis serves minority- and women-owned small businesses throughout the region, while organizations like Emerge Memphis and EpiCenter exist to encourage and support entrepreneurship in the city.
  • An ideal workforce: With a strong work ethic and a median age of 35, the Memphis workforce is ready to get down to business. There are grants and programs in place to help area companies find and train workers, and the number of available employees in Memphis is expected to increase by several percentage points by 2021.
  • Rock-bottom tax rates: Good news for employers and employees alike—Tennessee has the second-lowest state and local tax burden per capita in the country, with no income tax on wages. Plus, the City of Memphis and Shelby County don’t have a payroll (occupational) tax or a head tax.
  • A thriving community: From Black Restaurant Week to Hattiloo Theatre, Memphis is gaining a reputation as a supportive environment for black-owned businesses, and as a city that attracts and encourages talent and ambition.

Statistics can tell us a lot, but we think Memphis has something else going for it. Call it soul, spirit, grit or determination—it’s that culture of hustle and hard work that the folks who call this city home know all too well.

Come see us sometime and experience Memphis culture for yourself! And if you’re thinking of starting a business here, be sure to check out these incentives for those seeking to locate or expand their business in Memphis.

The River City, Barbecue Pork Capital of the World, Bluff City, Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll and, of course, the Home of the Blues can now add another nickname to the list: Moviemaking Mecca.

In 2o17, The City of Memphis ranked as one of the top 15 Best Places to Work and Live as a Moviemaker. The study on filming locations showed that Memphis attracted 119 client projects, nearly doubling its number of network series, which resulted in 983 reported jobs. Sounds like a win-win! Not only does our city provide the perfect background for the big screen, our very own Memphians and local businesses benefit from these productions. But, hey, this is Memphis. We’re not surprised. We’re changing the world, whether onscreen or in our own backyard. If you’re curious what the fuss is all about, just take a look.

The lure

Empowering. Soul-filled. Diverse. These are just a few words to describe the vibe that has attracted so many to Memphis, but what awards us the spotlight for a top filming location? Ask a Memphian and the list will be endless. As for moviemakers, the lure starts with our “infectious Southern vibrancy” and extends to:

The landscape

Memphis’ unique location as the border city of three states offers moviemakers a wide array of nearby landscapes, ranging from downtown Memphis to the Delta Mississippi.

The diverse geography showcases Memphis, but can also be transformative when moviemakers need to emulate the streets of Chicago or the neighborhoods of Cape Cod.

The people

When it comes to cast and crew, moviemakers can’t get enough of who Memphis has to offer.

Since Tennessee is a right-to-work state, there are plenty of talented Memphians who thrive in all parts of the movie production process. Moreover, moviemakers have an abundance of casting opportunities, as creative and theatrical professionals live and act all over the city. Look no further than the Orpheum Theatre, the University of Memphis’ theatre program and more.

Accommodations abound

We owe a lot of praise to the Memphis & Shelby County Film and Television Commission. Thanks to its unwavering support and accommodating qualities, moviemakers have had a hard time passing up filming in the River City. In fact, these benefits led the five-time Academy Award-nominated film “Walk the Line” to shoot in Memphis over Louisiana.

Once confirming their filming location, producers have the freedom to choose from a number of public facilities at no cost, including schools, the Shelby County Courthouse and the more than 14,000-acre Meeman-Shelby Forest State Park.

Our city’s Film Commission then goes overboard to ensure that the entire cast and crew has reservations at local hotels, and continues to handle extensions and other accommodations upon arrival.

Travel and transport

When you’re on a tight deadline and hours and days mean thousands of dollars, time is everything. With this in mind, you can’t blame producers for choosing Memphis! The nonstop flights to Los Angeles and New York relieve a lot of the headaches and wasted time of layovers.

People aren’t the only things needing quick transport during crunch time! When a package needs to be overnighted to Memphis, nearby FedEx International works hard to get items delivered, staying open until almost midnight. After all, we all know what a relief it is when your package arrives on time.

The sounds of Memphis

Last but not by any means least, the music roots that grow and gather throughout our city capture the attention of moviemakers looking to cast musical roles and to create iconic, award-winning motion-picture soundtracks.

Made in Memphis

From indie films to Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winners, beloved movies of all genres have featured the iconic streets of Memphis. Luckily, you don’t have to be part of the cast and crew to see these locales up close. Whether you’re in town for a quick business trip, taking it easy on a Saturday afternoon or visiting to soak up the city’s soul and sounds, follow in the footsteps of some of your favorite actors and actresses throughout our city.

While you can always count on Beale Street as a path where legends walk, don’t forget to check out Memphis’ motion-picture moments at other unique spots, including:

This is only a portion of some of our city’s most memorable moviemaking landmarks, and as Linn Sitler of the Memphis Film Commission noted, Memphis’ onscreen appearances don’t start or end with movies: “Even in years with major feature films, TV has always been our meat and potatoes.” If you’ve been binge-watching “This Is Us,” you’ve probably spotted our soulful city in some scenes!

Becoming one of the top filming locations for moviemaking is just one of the reasons why the world is quickly falling for the inescapable attraction of Memphis. Don’t be surprised if you keep seeing us on the big screen!

If you just entered the job market or are getting ready to make your debut as a young professional, you know how intimidating the idea of seeking jobs after graduation can feel. It may seem like a daunting task, but if you know where to look and what to look for, your job search will go much more smoothly.

One of the hottest landing spots for recent graduates is Memphis. This unique, soulful city has become a hub of innovation and growth for a wide range of companies that do business on both a national and worldwide scale.

Some of the highest-paying entry-level positions are based right here in the 901! Salary data was computed by sifting through job profiles and postings with LinkedIn’s salary tool.

Operations Engineer

The world hub of FedEx’s global operations calls Memphis home and employs a wide range of local engineers. Operations engineers focus on solving problems using scientific methods, and as you would assume, they are a major part of FedEx’s largely logistical operation.

Much of FedEx’s tactical planning and engineering is carried out by operational engineers who are dedicated to planning, organizing and controlling the company’s global services in the most efficient and effective way possible. Fiscal year and long-range planning are also handled by these engineers.

Insight and Aramark are two other major employers in the Memphis market that utilize the services of operations engineers, with the latter leveraging engineers to develop and deploy its facilities management program.

Data Scientist

What’s inside a number can help businesses run more efficiently and effectively. Collecting, analyzing, curating and integrating this information is the job of a data scientist.

Although healthcare may not be the first industry that comes to mind in connection with data scientists, the Memphis-based St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital utilizes data science to mine and model data for drug screening experiments, lead development and drug repurposing projects. Ultimately, data scientists at St. Jude work with chemical and biological data to drive research forward.

ServiceMaster is another major Memphis employer that utilizes data scientists in creating a roadmap for the company’s future and developing ServiceMaster’s unique vision.

Investment Banking Analyst

Positions in investment banking took the top spot on Business Insider‘s list. Analysts in this field cull and analyze financial data to better monitor investment portfolios for individuals and businesses, making an average of $105,000 at the entry level.

One of the top landing spots for investment banking analysts in Memphis is Duncan-Williams. Tracing its history back to regional municipal bond firms, Duncan-Williams has grown into one of the largest female-owned investment banking firms in the nation. Despite its size, it has remained focused on operating with a small-business culture, making it popular with recent graduates.

Memphis has become a national destination for both employers and those seeking jobs after graduation. Located in a right-to-work state with a relatively low cost of living, Memphis offers numerous workforce advantages that will continue to lead growth across the board for years to come.
